anonymous: FYI, Mandy has been running the pub since early 2004.

anonymous: not sure whether you heard Ben right, or whether he was talking to you. I'm sure it was supposed to be a joke, though, whichever it was.

danrkelly: you picked a slightly unfortunate night to visit - last Thursday a lot of our regulars (and me!) were over at Leyton Orient Supporters Club for their two-day beer festival.

The pork scratchings are indeed made on the premises by Simon the chef.

We're having our own beer festival next month - 15th-19th November. I hope to have about 30 real ales available.

lighterthief: thanks for the kind words! We do intend to serve a wide variety of guest beers; this will get easier as we get busier. At the moment my problem is sometimes that people won't drink the guests when I put them on - they go for the Milton beer instead!

mtaylor40: you should come back - it's changed a lot in the last few months! The kitchen's open now, which attracts more people at mealtimes, and we're picking up more regulars. Chess club on Tuesday nights is getting quite busy!

(Urgh, no HTML in reviews. You know what I mean!)

On Thursday evening we had a group of 200 travellers come in, sit down, and start drinking their own beer. (Bottles of American Bud, cans of Fosters, and so on.)

I called the police; it took them about an hour to clear the pub. It was completely trashed afterwards: the floor was a sea of beer, broken glass, bottle tops, little ripped-up bits of bottle labels...

It took me about ten hours to clean up on Friday, so the pub was late opening.

The same group visited just about every pub in Hackney that evening; most of them closed.

Next beer festival: 15th to 22nd November 2005. The same as usual - about 40 real ales, five ciders/perries, lovely food.

Now no-smoking throughout.

NB the local church finishes before opening time (12pm) on Sundays. If you arrive at opening time you might catch them clearing up!

Oh yes, another thing: we're now serving Sunday lunch from 12pm every Sunday. Turn up early to avoid disappointment - we've sold out each week so far.

The next festival is 21st-27th February. 30+ real ales, 5 real ciders.

We didn't get Anglia POTY, by the way. Apparently the design of the pub isn't sufficiently directed towards young people.

What dog? There hasn't been a dog living there since late 2003.

The beer festival is actually 12th-16th August, although obviously by the 16th quite a lot of the beers will have been drunk. There's going to be a bit of a party on the Saturday evening (14th) because it's the landlord's birthday. One of the beers is his special birthday brew!

The preliminary beer and cider list is on the pub web page.

Fun pub quiz on Wednesday evenings. The landlord used to run the tombola at Cambridge Beer Festival; he has no problem making himself heard.

Noted the comment about the lighting. We'll try some lower-wattage bulbs in the public bar.

New opening hours:

Thu 12-2, 5-11
Fri-Sat 12-11
Sun 12-10:30

I'll be looking after the pub for the next couple of months - at least until the new year - after which I'll be looking for a couple to run it. Bruce and Steph will be a hard act to follow, but I hope that won't put people off...

Definitely not going to become a food-oriented pub. We've seen pubs go down that route before - very nice for a while, but it's far too easy to end up as a restaurant-with-beer instead of a pub-with-food.

We plan on doing _good_ food - everything freshly cooked, no re-heated frozen stuff - but nothing fancy. We're going to restrict the food serving times so that it's definitely a drinkers pub in the evening; we'll do food up to around 8pm and then stop.

Yes, baked potatos are currently the only non-snack food available. This is because our kitchen (and indeed the whole first floor) is full of builders. Once the kitchen's back in one piece we should be able to offer a full menu - hopefully in a month or so.

The Oakdale now has a friendly, informal pub quiz on Thursday evenings. First prize for a team is 20 of drinks; second prize is 10 of drinks. The quiz doesn't cost anything to enter - just turn up.

Yes, we're the same people that run the Coalheavers in Peterborough. (Speaking of which, I'm just about to get on a train and go there to run it over the weekend while Bruce and Steph have a short holiday...)
