| First visit from yours truly yesterday ( Sunday ) lunchtime. Arriving just after midday, it initially appeared that I had gatecrashed some kind of kiddies play group, what with kids running around all over the place and parents sitting idly by with pushchairs. However, thankfully, they soon left and I was able to enjoy 2 of the Milton Beers that were on. I liked the Pegasus, a dark copper coloured malty beer, but I was less keen on the Sparta, which tasted a bit lifeless and uninspiring. The friendly barman - who bore a slight resemblance to Peter Stringfellow - offered me a taster of the others, which I wish I'd taken up in retrospect. There weren't any non Milton guest beers on. The pub is situated in Hermitage Road, off Green Lanes, but right at the other end, about 10 minutes walk down the road if coming from the Green Lanes end. Well worth visiting - can be combined with a visit to the Salisbury in Green Lanes, which was our next port of call after leaving the Oakdale. | Excellent once again on Friday night (01/02/08). One of the guest beers was a 3.6% IPA from a microbrewery - absolutely exquisite, and more-ish. Furthermore it was good to see Jupiter back on, alongside several other low-strength nevertheless high-flavour session ales available. The jukebox is now fully illiminated once again so the practice of bringing candles and lighters up to it is now redundant. I have to modify my commentary of 02/01/08 regarding the food shop on Seven Sisters Road - sadly it appears to have closed down (or at least be closed in the evenings), so visitors please ignore that paragraph and eat beforehand. All the pub needs now is a few hooks to hang coats on, and for its loyal clientele to continue rewarding the team's efforts with continued regular custom. | Stunning pub atmosphere due to Nell back behind the bar the other night we visited. Good to see you in your rightful place as everyone misses you, customers and staff alike. | Seven of the nine pumps were in use last night (Monday): mainly Milton beers (of course) but with one or two guest beers. It's a friendly local pub with its own style. I'll drop in again later this week. clissold345 - 15 Jan 2008 20:30 |
| Very good atmosphere last night, with eight out of a possible 9 pumps in use. Miltons and seasonal guest beers on great form. Rob and Anthony are continuing to do a fine job. I'm not sure if the "bring your takeaway" policy is still valid but, if it is, a fantastic curry canteen called Maharaja opened up on New Years Eve at 602 Seven Sisters Road, just around the corner from the Oakdale. They are open until 1am daily, and serve quickly. It's great for a pre- or post-session curry, as I found to my delight last night. I mention this to capture clientele who have previously cited the lack of food or a decent place to eat nearby as a deterrent to visiting the Oakdale Arms. Threatened with demolition or not, the pub is doing all it can to survive and thrive as a decent local, maintaining its eclectic clientele and its independent style.
