The Royal Exchange, Haverhill

Well worth a visit. Friendly staff and nice boozer although the landlord and his mate the night I was there were going on like that pair of old codgers sitting in the balcony on The Muppet Show.

The Bull, Haverhill

Basic but friendly enough boozer. A refuge from the Drabbet across the road.

Lovely pints! This is an excellent pub in the city centre.
Even though many of the hard-nosed, hard-drinking media crowd (real, old-style newspaper people!) have mostly disappeared, it's still a pub with real character with some real characters (except tea-times Fridays when it's jammed with Celtic Tiger office wallahs).
Staff are sound - they don't mind helping or humouring tourists when it's fairly quiet.
Rashers says not the cleanest pub in the world - I'm fussy about hygiene and in my many years supping there I've never had cause to complain.
Highly recommended.

The Carpenters Arms, Kings Cross

Maybe I'm biased because I was born a few doors down 50 years ago but I got a friendly welcome without the neighbours routine. Good service too.

The Drabbet Smock, Haverhill

Horrible. Slip across the road instead for a basic but decent place to have a pint.

The Woolpack, Haverhill

Lively but one to avoid at night if you don't like crowds. One of Haverhill's better boozers nonetheless (and I haven't seen too many so far).

The White Hart, Haverhill

I popped in on my way to see Haverhill Rovers, just down the road, so I'm a bit of a footie fan and a masochist but not enough to venture into this loud, over-crowded beer bungalow again. I prefer to enjoy my pint.
