Paper Mill, Hemel Hempstead

Fantastic location for a standard Fullers pub. Occasionally has an interesting guest (e.g. Red Squirrel) otherwise usual stuff, reasonably well kept.

Pretentious, overpriced, not very good food.

Service at the bar is often laughable with glass collection/chatting/invisible essential tasks given preference over serving the punters.

The Harefield, Harefield

Very decent pub in Harefield village. Welcoming landlady (and locals), 3 well kept beers on handpump and well priced, good value, well executed bar food (e.g. burger etc. for £7). Unfussy and comfortable.

Fishery Inn, Boxmoor

As I have not ventured into this pub for years, I was very pleasantly suprised by the clean, bright decor, attentive and reasonably efficient staff, decent pint of Youngs, and a Sunday roast for just under a tenner. Admittedly overcooked pork but plenty of it and well tasty. Yes it's a chain but that is a better fate for a pub when considering the rather unpleasant, fighty establishment of old.

The Hogshead, Southwark

It's a hogshead.

The Lord Clyde, Borough

An oasis in a mad world.
A couple of pints of well kept IPA are often sufficient to tempt a few to follow in this lovely, classic, comfortable, friendly pub.

The Rose and Crown, Southwark

Excellent beer in cosy (and nearly always packed) bar. Tremendous lunchtime food. A classic.

The Lord Nelson, Southwark

Now I'm even more confused. This pub has been completely refurbished over the past couple of months and re-opened yesterday.
The pump beer is not on yet - but Pride was being readied and one can only hope that it is to be kept in a condition more fitting a fine beer than was the case. There are innumerable keg beer dispensers on the bar (the fashionable-for-some-strange-reason tall things) which still, thankfully, include a Guinness tap, but nothing else of interest. The food is still excellent but the price, I guess inevitably, has risen. The rice is now not included in the price so my old staple of chicken green curry has gone from an acceptable 4.50, up to 6 or even 6.50 depending on type of rice - a considerable hike - and breaking the important psychological 5 lunch barrier.
I have to say, the decor, and therefore ambiance, of the place is much improved, but the pub has lost a lot in character and is now pretty much indistinguishable from umpteen others. If people wanted tasteless keg lager pumped out in a charmless shed there was always the Union Jack (why do so many people on this site rate that dump?) so it seems both a shame and needless to duplicate it 50 yards up the road.
I'll still be going for the food though, even at the increased prices, and the staff, and Amy who runs the kitchen, are a delight.

The Lord Nelson, Southwark

Difficult to know what to say about this place. Fairly typically awful pub attached to flat block. Grim interior and *terrible* beer - very occasionally the Pride is drinkable (1 in 20) - stick to guiness/lager. However, that said, at lunchtimes (I have studiously avoided evenings), very friendly staff serve the *best* Thai food in the area at very good prices.

The Anchor, Southwark

Atmosphere of a bus station; bored, inattentive and slow staff serving an undrinkable Courage Best. Only plus is the riverside tables.
