The Ivy House, Nunhead

I love this pub! Theres a great Nunhead Community feel about it. No Yummy mummys kids running around getting on your nerves, nice decent, well brought up children who know how to behave. Huge big function room at the back. Dogs welcome and tend to get a treat from the chef occasionally. Can't wait for the cold winter evenings snuggled around the fire if it's true what Pat Bateman Says. Try it, you'll love it.

The Rye Pub, Dining Room and Garden, Peckham Rye

Oh dear, what have they done. Very tightly packed in the garden. The staff had trouble finding tables that have ordered food prior to adding double the amount. I ordered a nice pint of flat cider and was charged 60p more for the priviledge. The front and back have absolutely no atmosphere what so ever. Was the only pub where i enjoyed sitting in the garden. Don't like this place anymore.

Practically sitting on each others laps.

The Crown Inn, Stockport

Right, this is not a good way to rate a pub in my opinion. This is more like a slanging chat site. If the people on here were true beer/ale drinkers there wouldn't be all this fighting going on.

I did set foot in this pub through true curiosity as to what the locals were like after reading this and you know what? You're not all that .As for the beer/ale, average.

"didn't realise this site was all about shooting other peoples views down"

Mmm, appears that you might just be doing that yourself!

The Montague Arms, New Cross

I love this pub. It's great for a meal with friends or family. It has a comfiness about it. You kinda feel that you are at your grandparents for dinner. You can see them scurrying about in the kitcken. The food is tops and very cheap. I love all the quirky bits and bobs hanging around. Go there, you'll love it.

The Waverley Arms, Nunhead

ittakes2269er , what was the name of your local and where was it.

Is the Waverley gonna dim the lights a little at some point? I find it very bright in there.

The Sun Inn, Bethnal Green

I smell a big fat RAT!
Essexgril has only ever made 3 negative posts before this one and none of them refer to actually going to a pub thats is open. Do you actually drink? <whistle>

The Hayfield, Stepney Green

This venue is now trading as the Hayfield Massala - not a pub at all any more!

The Black Horse, Stepney

This bar, which changed it's name to eOne in 2007, is now closed and is unlikely to reopen.

Habana, Bethnal Green

This venue has been closed for more than 2 years

I'm not sure what issues SLL has. This pub offers 4 real ales, a first class wine list and an imaginative menu. There is always a friendly relaxed atmosphere and it is a very popular venue locally. His review is so wide of the mark I wonder if he has ever visited.

The Black Boy, Winchester

Bateman, don't know where you were looking, but i never saw any "very pretty young barmaids". Huh!

Must say, i liked this pub, it was situated outside of Winchester main town, so the walk along the river side is very relaxing after the hussle and bustle of the high street, also it leads you here for refreshments.

Very intersting inside. Looks like a museum. Tourists would love it. I liked the old furniture and the old scatterd rubbishy cushions on un-matching seats.Look out for the head peering round the door on the ceiling and the mis-matched face on the pillar at the bar! Felt the garden was not in keeping with the pub itself and could do with being "oldening" up a bit.

The Hyde Tavern, Winchester

I like this pub. Stopped here early one Saturday and was the first customers here. Made very welcome even by Jimmy. Has a nice dining area at the back and if your brave enough to walk down the old steep steps it will lead you to a nice little garden at the back. It also has a large cellar which i had a little peep in!

The Waverley Arms, Nunhead

locals1, by your post you lead me to believe that you will be running the Waverley, am i correct? You know that things will change from the 17th of May, so i expect it is you.

Are you asking whether we would be happy with... 3 big screens before world cup, sky sports, at the races, darts team, barbilards table, friendly mangement, curry nights (pint and a curry 4.99), happy hour 12-6 (discounted drinks) and food on the bar every sunday, because this is what you want to introduce?

Sounds ok, for a quick drop in pint or 2 occasionally, but not sure the Waverley could confortably accomodate 3 big screens without blowing your head off. Remember, some people still enjoy a quiet drink too. ( Perhaps you could introduce a snug.)

Tan Hill Inn, Keld

I'm sorry i have to disagree with Carlurmston. and agree more with Pat_Bateman. This place has far from resisted the urge to go all touristy. In fact it is totally the opposite. Hats, and all sorts of souvenirs swamp the left side of the bar. Umpteen insulting posters and news clippings allover the walls just to remind you Tracy is acting up her reputation as the craziest landlady. Had i known it was all an act i would have driven straight past.

Stayed one night and glad it was just one. The rooms are shabby and unclean and expensive for what they are. I know dogs are allowed to stay and don't object to that, but Tracy, get the hoover out my love. The bathroom flooring was lifting itself off the floor. There are rooms upstairs that need looking after as well as a bar that the customers run.

Breakfast? well tea, coffee, orange juice maybe? no, don't expect either, you won't get it. Stuck me in a freezing cold dining room, couldn't wait to leave.

Felt i was living under Norman Bates roof. VISIT BEFORE YOU DIE? i don't think so, VISIT AND YOU MAY DIE, of disappointment.

The Head of the River, Oxford

Have to agree with Pat Bateman on this one. Looks really nice on the Photos, but sadly as i was lying on my bed admiring the wooden beans, i was greeted with huge cobweds dangling above my head.

Breakfast was half cooked toast with an egg that turned up once the toast was cold to bisciut stage and the relaxing sound of an animal t.v show through the speakers, decribing a deer with a severed spine. Mmm, nice when dipping your cold toast into your egg.

They lady who greeted me was friendly enough and made me welcolme, but won't be going back.

Sorry nice lady!

The Champion of the Thames, Cambridge

This is a lovely pub if you are visiting Cambridge, the landlord is a friendly chap and the locals make a lovely atmosphere. Give it a visit if you are passing through.

The Fishermans Arms, East Looe

I love this pub and the people in it. Lucy was a feature here, but as already said, a little unsure of strangers, i was offered a taster of cheese with my drink from a local at the bar. (Nice chap).

The Star Inn, St Just

Very friendly pub, felt like a local when i was only on my holiday. Well done!

Herne Tavern, Forest Hill

I try so hard to enjoy this place, but struggle every time.

The kids really need to be segregated from the drinkers. It feels more like a nursery than a pub.

Find the staff more and more rude. Last visit i stood at the bar again for about 10 minutes waiting to be served and find myself ignored . When the Aussie chap's pal walked in he saw him and served him immediately.

Little more manners, a please and thankyou, wouldn't go a miss "Brucey boy"!

The Waverley Arms, Nunhead

Such a shame it didn't work out for the first guy that took it over. His ideas were great. It seems a pity that a local pub has now been given up on by the locals themselves.

There really isn't much happening in the Waverley now. It's open, yeah, but missing customers.

The dart board is back, the T.V is back, but the pool room has been closed. Quiz night is a thing of the past, and i haven't seen a sausage or roast potato.

So, although it has gone back to a locals pub, with most of what was there before, it has lost the locals support.

Would be sad to see another pub close, but someone really needs to get their thinking cap on with this one.

Good luck old Wavereley one, may the locals support you!

Herne Tavern, Forest Hill

Mmm, nice pub for catching the sun in the evening.

Not sure that under 12's should still be allowed in after 6pm, running around like lunatics, while the drinkers have to dodge out of THEIR way!

Staff need to learn that there are 3 sections to that tiny bar area.. left, right and middle.

I stood there for 10 minutes waiting to be served, only another customer actually noticed how long i had been waiting.

The staff need to spread out across the bar area, not congregate at one end.

Food is pricey for what it is, however the Jack Daniels and coke is a good price, even nicer when there are tall glasses left to have it it.
