Moon Under Water, Enfield

The service is good and the recent three week beer festival provided some excellent ales. The regular brand choices such as various Nethergates will keep people visiting too. All year round their ales are very well kept so the staff/management score many brownie points for that. A big difference from pubs that offer the bog-standard GK IPA but have absolutely no idea how to keep it, why they should or even what it is!

However, as usual there's a subjective downside. In early 2009 I visited on a Friday night which appeared to be reserved for youthful brightly-coloured blingers who seem eager to enjoy extremely close relationships with strangers. Reports from other visitors since then indicate that's still the case on Friday nights.

I don't really feel like I'm in a pub and therefore can't consider it a 'local' in the traditional sense - but it's an okay place to be most evenings and Saturday nights... but, would I use it if there were no ale pumps? Sorry, no - I'm a beer snob. The ales are my only reason to go there.

Yep, service is great and and a far better Town venue than the competition.
Maybe it's my age, I'll have to get used to the accoustics. I hope the third ale pump will be used for seasonal offerings. Where's the dartboard?? :-)

Several of my comments about the KH appear to have been removed and I can guess why, but heyho life's way too short and I'm still going to give the new Kings Head an 8 rating.

I did have a comment to make about this place, but I want to live...

Royall are out, another one is in... maybe. Rumour has it another firm (read corporate front) is thinking of opening it as a restaurant/bar/hotel in spring 2010. Can't see it happening, there are struggling restaurants all around the Town and the reason for the 'hotel' idea can only be the Olympics. Personally I think the place is going to be derelict for years yet but I would love to be proved wrong.

The ales are okay, but seriously it's not a pub, I feel like I should be hot-desking. To be generous, it's a bar, too expensive and incredibly boring.

BOING! Another fast forward to July 2009 - the licensing application made by Royall Inns of Brighton was accepted and they have already been quietly working on the innards of the Head. Should be open by Christmas. Hopefully with proper beer.

But the "To Let" sign is still up...

No point in visiting, it'll probably be shut when you get there. Avoid until someone sensible takes it over - or, for preference, takes it back...

After more than a year without M & L it's closed for most of the week thanks to the 'management' annoying the tits off all the regulars and flushing them down the toilet as soon as they walked in. I want a 'Bring Back Mick & Lisa!' campaign.

Bring Back Mick & Lisa!
Bring Back Mick & Lisa!

Someone from Royall Inns wandered into the George, went goggle-eyed and decided to pull out. Fast forward to Feb 2009 and there are 4 more potential bidders, 1 restaurant, 3 pubs. The town certinaly doesn't need another restaurant anf for 'pubs', read 'management companies'.

Righto then. The prices are attractive but that's all. Surly staff and all the so-called 'real ales' are fizzy. They must have a sparklets gromet on the pumps or something - FFS, why??? It's A-L-E. And if they think a Cask Marque medal means anything they're wrong, my dog could get Cask Marque for his saliva. Still full of wronguns.

Unfortunately, if it was ever turned back into a real pub (like it was 30 years ago) it wouldn't make nearly enough money to survive, so that's that then.

Only five pumps?? There's room for ten in this place.

Or maybe there'll be only four pumps, after all one is almost guaranteed to be wasted on the ubiquitous Greene King IPA... tell me it ain't so! But you're not going to are you, you're going to make me wait...

Rumour No. 1: a lack of rumour control has delivered the possibly dubious information that Royall Inns Ltd will take on the Head. I could be wrong about the name of the company.

Rumour No. 2 suggests that the newbies are going to completely gut the place - any listed parts of the building will be fair game. Presumably, out goes the old stuff and in comes Norwegian pine.

Rumour No. 3 is the fly in the ointment for me; it has been mooted that the newbies will turn the Kings Head into a gastro pub. Which means not really a pub. This is something I bang on about all the time - the Enfield Town area needs pubs, not another eatery!
Although having said that, if they reintroduce pukka draught beer as well the inevitable poxy creamflow and the ubiquitous British-made yellow piss, I may well be tempted. I bet there won't be any darts though.

But like I say, currently it's all rumours...

I meant to say, you're correct (at time of going to press), it's a different mob taking over. M&B seem to be pulling out of boozers for now.

There's a rumour going round that it's going to be reopening on September 10 as a free house! Wednesday or not, I'll certainly be there to investigate. But if that's wrong and it's still just a lager & nasties haven, I'll be out the door before parting with any money.

Off to post a rumour about the King's Head now...

The newbies put 25p on a pint in MID-SESSION, around 5.30 in the afternoon, couldn't even wait til the next bloody day. Buy a pint at say 2.50, five mins later 2.75.

They lost all the dart and crib teams. Rumour has it that they got in with a three month lease and an option to buy after. 500 ex-customers hope the newb's bank accounts are bad, very bad.

This place rated very high in Jan, within days it became a 0. Walk past it now during the week there's about 4 people in it.

The lease runs out on December 15 and the current situation is that the Kings Head will close for good. It seems unlikely that a company willl take it up now with the cost of the lease plus the extra half million it'd cost to rennovate the electrics, the walls and everything else that's crumbling.

If it is taken up, I hope it's by a company that brews beer - a brewery, if anyone remembers them - rather than another flippin' management company.

Whatever, that corner of the market is going to be quite different.
