The Endeavour, Whitby

Stumbled on this place late one Friday night whilst visiting Whitby for the weekend. What a find! The folk music I can take or leave but the extensive spread of handpulls from all over GB (including Harviestoun Old Engine Oil which I adore) was most impressive. Full but not crowded, friendly and warm atmosphere in a gem of a tavern.

The Three Horseshoes, Leyburn

Don't bother going back for the Wensleydale beer, Oldboots. I went there yesterday and after enquiring about it was informed that it had not been the brewery tap for some 18 months. About time they removed the signage then! Decent pub apart from that faux pas, though.

The Watermill Inn, Ings

This place is turning into Crufts - fine if you're into the smell of wet dog while you're eating but this wonderful pub's dog-friendly policy is now getting out of hand. I've lost count of the number of fights, snarls and bark-fests I've had to sit through recently (don't come here if you want to read your Sunday paper in peace). Some of these owners have no shame whatosever. Don't get me wrong, I love this place and visit several times a month - it keeps the best cellar in the area if not the country (I travel a lot) - but enough with the dogs, please!!

White Lion Hotel, Ambleside

It might have a fair selection of guest ales but good luck trying to order any! Staff encourage a 'free-for-all' at the often busy bar with the loudest and pushiest generally winning. Witnessed an extraordinary incident on Sunday when one man, overlooked for some time, stood up for himself only to be set upon by the landlord.

There are far better pubs yards away (like the Queens Hotel) with better kept beer and a welcoming atmosphere so best avoid this one.

The Castle, Holborn

Visited for the first time last week during a two-day crawl of London's finest. Was impressed with both the range and quality of the cask ale, and the friendliness of the staff. Quiet after 9pm but well worth a trip.

The Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater

Discovered this pub a few years ago and it has remained my all-time favourite ever since. The location cannot be bettered, the food is excellent (try the steak pie!) and their very own Loweswater beer range includes two magnificent efforts in Kirkstile Gold and Grasmoor Dark Ale (both in my personal Top Ten...and I sample a lot of beer!).

Had the pleasure of visiting here again on Sunday after climbing Mellbreak. Was disappointed that no Loweswater beers were on (in fact availability has been a little irregular of late which they need to watch) but was still presented with three good quality local brews. A simply wonderful place.
