De Garre, Bruges

Oh I love this place. It couldn't exist in the UK. So genteel, so relaxed. 150ish beers. Seats for no more than 50 on two floors. Just back from a birthday trip to the Lowlands with friends and to sit there with a Rochefort 8 and my favourite piece of classical music playing in the background made it so special. A few hours later we were in the Wilderman in Amsterdam. The previous night, the Beertje. It's not a bad life!

The Radnor Arms, Kensington

Well I wrote some time ago after hearing that the pub had been saved...and now the bad news. My visits were rare but I loved the Radnor Arms. Fine beer and friendly, that's what we all want in a pub. Hope all the locals and the licensees can find somewhere to compare.

In de Wildeman, Amsterdam

Numerous vists since my last posting but I just have to state that NOWHERE that I've ever been to takes BEER so seriously. The staff are unbelievably good. They have a knowledge of beer to put any 'expert' to shame.

The Taps, Lytham St Annes

Well it was my first ever visit last night...and it was wonderful. The beer was the best of the night in a town where all pubs sell real ale. It was comfortably busy...but the atmosphere was fantastic. People were talking! They could hear each other...there was no deafening music. That's a rarity for somebody used to Blackpool pubs. Just like the P and T in the old days.

Marine Hall, Fleetwood

Beautiful day, with friend and her 10 year old son. Quite happy to stay in the empty enclosed beer garden but they insist on plastic glasses outdoors. Real ale in plastic? No thanks.

The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale

Well you can't beat the setting...or the ale. Went on a hot summer's day (15/11/2006). Tremendous!

Grey Wall Inn, Windermere

Well I've no idea when it was decided that the beer was 'off' but it was changed when the Landlord/ Manager appeared shortly afterwards. Was into the Blond Witch by then though.

Grey Wall Inn, Windermere

Well I was quite impressed yesterday! (24/6) Clean. Friendly staff and locals. The barman even said not to have the OP as it was near the end of the barrel. Two Theakstons, three Moorhouses. The untried food looked fine. No complaints at all.

Good news about the petition working! Cynical old me thought it was a done deal. Next trip to London and I'll be there.

't Brugs Beertje, Bruges

Made a flying visit to the Beertje yesterday. It was opening time and busy immediately but Daisy and the staff still made time to have a chat. The second Brugge bar that is hard to fault.

De Garre, Bruges

Just back from a quick day out in Brugge. Nipped into the Curiosa, the Beertje and the faultless de Garre. The beer menu was replaced by a new updated and according to the Barman, extended version during our stay. Sadly didn't have a chance to compare.

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

P and T BEER FEST! April 6-10th to coincide with the CAMRA AGM. If anybody wants the beer list give me a shout.

De Beiaard, Amsterdam

One of the less heralded beer bars in the Dam but always friendly and comfortable. Good food, excellent range of Belgian beer and the more common Dutch varieties. Outdoor seating for the Dutch summer, plenty of window seats to watch the trams go by. Excellent for people watching!

Quinn's, Camden

Good friendly pub, staff and regulars. Range of ales seems reduced these days but those foreign beers will keep me going for a while longer. The staff on my all too rare visits don't seem to have English 'as their first language'. Makes it interesting. As does the descent to the toilets.

The Crescent, Salford

Must have been going in the Crescent for nearly 20 years now and it has risen to new heights. Anybody remember the old days with Jo, Andy and Matthew...Debbie, Zippy and Colin behind the bar?

The Radnor Arms, Kensington

Agree with every positive comment about the Radnor. Last in during the GBBF last year and signed a petition against closure. Any news on that?

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

Pluses...the best beer in Blackpool. 7 rotating guest beers plus the blot on the landscape, Boddington's. Avoids most of the towns yobs, homegrown and grockles. Landlord who is desperate to appeal to all tastes in a pub. Minuses...small square room with 5 tv's showing different nearly silent programmes or adverts, space taking pool table, weekend 'entertainment' you can set your watch by ( if it's half nine they'll be doing Mack The Knife), largely the same music from the machine behind the bar during the week. Good service though and whisper it...Blackpool prices are reduced for CAMRA members.
Not a patch on the old Hogshead days but posibly the best real ale pub in the Town.

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Thanks Stonch. Was obviously given wrong info.

16 Feb 2006 00:38

't Brugs Beertje, Bruges

Very small bar with excellent staff. Until that damn American website told everyone that Westvleteren 12 was the best beer in the world it was an almost guaranteed outlet for the stuff!. Difficult to fault Gollem.

15 Feb 2006 01:00

In de Wildeman, Amsterdam

The only drawback of de Wildeman is that it can be a bit chilly. There was a gap in those doors! The staff are excellent, the beers are even better. Where else can you buy a beer and the sediment comes in another glass for you to choose whether to use? Along with Gollem there are no better Beer Bars in Dam.

15 Feb 2006 00:53

De Garre, Bruges

All the ratings are very personal but I agree that de Garre is an afternoon bar. So refined, almost 'other worldly' when compared to British bars. Just to sit there with a beer and chat to the classical music background is so relaxing. The staff know their job and do it faultlessly and are always knowledgable. Oh yeah. The worst thing about de Garre is that it is 'hard to find' on the first visit.

15 Feb 2006 00:36

The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell

Certain friends say the JT is 'tatty'. Well it's not exactly pristine but has a tremendous natural atmosphere. The place seems to breed contentment and laughter. Excellent barstaff, St Peter's beeers always on form. I have heard that the pub is currently closed. Can anybody advise?

15 Feb 2006 00:25

't Brugs Beertje, Bruges

200+ Belgian Beers, Vivaldi playing in the background, polite attentive barstaff, Daisy in attendance...and to quote, 'a buzz of conversation'. Sheer heaven. Add to that we left at 0430hrs one morning, shortly after the staff taxi and were asked to 'put the latch on'.Well we had a flight to catch! I cannot think of a better bar, anywhere.
