The Norfolk Arms, Steyning

I think this pub is just fo rhtose in the know - I went there once with a friend visiting from London and it was like stepping back in time Mary Poppins! I think the Norfolk Arms is a bit like Marmite - love it or hate it (I love marmite but...........!) Booze is cheap there though and last New Year they had a ticket only 35 no barman help yourself to whatever night! Probably great fun if there's a great big crowd of you!

The Chequer Inn, Steyning

Checquers is the best 'real' pub in Steyning. A half decent bottle of wine, at a good price. I prefer the saloon bar - probably unfairly, but I always think it's going to 'kick off' in the public bar! The food is of a high standard for pub grub - their sussex smokie is to die for! And friends have stayed int eh rooms twice - with no complaints, in fact, only compliments for the hearty breakfast!
The snug out the back is a great place to hideout iwht mates, but the courtyard isn't the most welcoming - serving mostly for smokers now....

The Castle Hotel, Bramber

A local's pub - very shoddy decor, but cheap booze and always a good atmosphere. The bar staff are always helpful and make conversation - in fact, so do all the clientelle! Refreshing in the south of England!

The White Horse, Steyning

I love the White Horse - it's a bar rather than a pub, and definitely more for quaffing wine than swilling beer! A bit pricey but you pay for the whole experience so we tend to have one nice bottle of wine in the white horse then move on to one of the other pubs in Steyning for some cheap grog before heading home! Even the toilets are posh - and very clean which makes a nice change! (Yes, I'm a bit of a girly).

The Red Lion, Handcross

I've been to this pub a few times as it's half way between our place on the coast and my Dad's in London and reasonably priced. I only ever go there for food, but there are plenty of other people there just having drinks (locals???) The food is okay for the money - service how ever, is always rubbish - I'm sure they wouldn't have noticed if we had left without paying last time! I liked the roast potatoes but they put some sort of seasoning on them which my 7 year old nephew hates - so we may have to go somewhere else next time.
