The Unicorn Hotel, Somerton

After getting a lukewarm welcome from disinterested bar staff, I almost fainted on the beer prices in here. Food prices arent cheap either, so much sandwiches and a beer for 4 of us came to 27!

I also had an issue with the beer garden which promises a lot with nice seating and a live aviary. However, what really ruins it, is bang in the middle of the outside area is a covered pagoda with enclosed sides for the smokers which gives the beer garden a furtive atmosphere. Not condusive.

The Wheatsheaf Inn, Yarmouth

Not very welcoming inside - very canteen like inside with food, although nice and reasonably priced, was not well presented. Great selection of beers though with Fuggle-me-do being the star with friendly and accommodating, if a little brow beaten, staff. However it is the only pub in Yarmouth with a TV for sports which is OK as long as no-one is playing pool then it's an issue for anyone that wants to get in the pub as they need to squeeze past them first. They also seem keen on getting you through quickly once you've eaten. We stood our ground and continued to watch the rest of the Grand Prix - go on, Button!!!

The Kings Head, Yarmouth

Popped in for lunch here today before our ferry ride. Top notch! Holy Joe is a wonderful session ale that matched the honest selection of pub food available. Food was reasonably priced and good quality with good sides (salad and chips) served with all sandwiches. They also do Old Rosie Scrumpy Cider on tap. Very comfy with a small outside and friendly and welcoming staff. Recommended while in Yarmouth and 10/10 while waiting for the ferry.

The Fighting Cocks, Arreton

Popped in here after visiting Amazon World (highly recommended) on the Isle of Wight. I was really impressed with the commitment here to honest and fresh LOCAL ingredients that resulted in a wonderful lunch and good ale at our visit to the Fighting Cocks. My oldest son had a burger which you could taste was freshly made (eg: not pre-prepared) with good quality beef and even the relish was made with fresh tomato and herbs. I sent my compliments to the kitchen for a fine lunch. The bus even stops outside to take you back to Newport. First rate - would go back.

The Ale House, Taunton

I've been here and I'm confused at what the pub is trying to acheive. It's in the wrong part of Taunton to be a "gastropub" yet the memory lingers on when it was the domain of the Marines. Last year after the cricket, myself and father in law went to the Crown and Sceptre instead.

The Westgate Inn, Taunton

The Westy has just has a change in pub manager yet I still think it's a great place. Good company, good ale and good food. Not a girly pub though.

Coal Orchard, Taunton

This pub is slowing going seriously downhill in both how it's looked after and the type that drink there now. I'm not going there again.

Lantokay, Street

This was a grubby spoons with poor service from staff who actually started fighting between themselves when we were there. Its a small place for a spoons as well plus it was draughty and the layout isnt good.

Good value food though.

The Wheelwright Inn, Colyford

Visited August 2007. Not impressed at all. The staff were just interested in getting you in and out of the door as quick as possible for food. Not welcoming or cosy - quite clincial in fact including the huge corporate computerised till that faces the customers - its all touch screen and industrial.

Badger beer on tap wasnt good and it was expensive. Plus the food was bad value - 8.25 for what was quite clearly a ping-pinged lasagne.
Not impressed - head for the White Hart.

The Unicorn Hotel, Somerton

The Unicorn is the place to go in Somerton for hearty food, friendly atmos, chill out and excellent ales.

Cobblestones Inn, Bridgwater

I remember when this pub was done up in "yuppie" style in 1988 - and thats about where the investment in this place ends....
It could do with a good lick of paint and a bit of polish and it would be a really nice pub. Trouble is, it hasnt and it appears that in 19 years, noone will. A shame.

Reeds Arms, Burnham On Sea

One of my better rated 'Spoons - they've done a good job of restoring the old Queens Hotel. Very pleasant with friendly attentive staff. Some good outside seating areas including some sea front seats.
A couple of minor gripes:
The smoking area is in the middle of the place so therefore the smoke "drifts"
The seating area to the left of the bar hat goes down to the sea front end is very poorly lit.

Food was 'Spoons standard at was served well and promptly. Good 'Spoons.

The Halfway House, Pitney

I'm lucky enough to live 2 miles away from this pub via a dodgy cycle ride over the back lanes. Firstly I must agree with Woppit - it does tend to cater for the city slickers down for their "traditional country" break. Remember that Father Ted episode with Henry Sellers - "the solitude gets to them". LOL! Still, everyone's friendly there and count on us "yokels" to always give you a friendly Somerset welcome.

Joking aside, this is a great pub which is 100% deserving of its reputation and awards. It comes into its own when the sun comes out - 200% chill out zone. You will physically feel the stress falling away from you. The food is hearty and there is a simple but effective kids play area and reassuringly the swings take an adults weight (well, about 10st anyway). Even better for me as I can cycle home afterwards but if you cant and you are staying over, then stay in Somerton as there is a heaven sent bus service that calls at the pub at 11.15pm to whisk you back to Somerton. There you go, the perfect country break. See you all there real soon!

The Racehorse Inn, Taunton

Now they've extended the patio garden out the back, its a must for the summer. The reason you wait to get served is because its so popular so therefore a victim of its own success. Great little place.

The Railway Inn, Westbury

Me and my son had a large change time at Westbury railway station so we nipped in here quickly to grab some lunch one day.

The staff were really helpful and cooked something up for us even though we'd arrived after "lunchtime", plus the food was good. Good little pool table and some good railway memorabilia dotted around.

Well done, the Railway Inn, you made us very welcome.

The Lion Hotel, Dulverton

Was working in Dulverton one day recently so nipped in here for a swift lunchtime pint and a snack. Despite ordering just a bowl of chips, I was marshalled out of the bar to be sat in the "eating" area by the waitress. Staff were a little surly and didnt appear to welcome outsiders although the locals were a friendly bunch. Lovely pub inside with a huge roaring fire. Exmoor Ales are the standard here and were lush especially Exmoor Fox. The food when it was arrived was very good although with the scorn I was served, I'm surprised it wasnt thrown at me. Perhaps I just caught them on a bad day.

The Butchers Arms, Carhampton

Went here with the family last summer. Nice honest food on a pleasant decking area out the back. Good ales served although inside it did appear to be the local hang out for the local "yoof". To be fair, there's probably nowhere else in Carhampton for them to go! They werent causing any bother though.

The White Hart Inn, Colyford

Went there for lunch as a stop off point while on the Seaton Tramway. A very welcoming and unpretentious place that served a good honest sandwich and chips with a fine selection of real ales incluidng Branscombe Vale (mmmmm). Nice garden out the back to enjoy the hospitality and watch the trams. Recommended and we look forward to going there again soon.

The Trout Inn, Bickleigh

We always go to the Trout Inn for lunch when we visit the nearby Devon Railway Centre (which is highly recommended) as its far less pretentious than the Cot (the other pub in Bickleigh). I've always found it welcoming enough. The food isnt terribly adventerous though and I do remember being served some mayonaisse that had gone off, last summer! However it is extremely reasonably priced for a country pub especially if you go for the cheesy chips and a sandwich type fodder. It serves good real ales including Exmoor.

It does have a superb beer garden though with a good kids play area with, sometimes, a free bouncy castle. Its nice sitting there with a pint of Exmoor ale, a bowl of cheesy chips and listening to the trains from the Railway Centre. Plus you can always watch the cricket if they're playing on the green behind the pub.
