The Maltings, South Shields

Always warm inside which is a good reason to frequent it in winter months when those real ale pubs down the riverside Mill Dam area are freezing through lack of heating. Ran by Jarrow breweries with several guest ales, quiz nights and low level relaxing music played. Very similar interior design to there other pub in Sunderland (The ISIS)

Alum Ale House, South Shields

Recent new management have seen a much needed increase in trade, the place heaving with custom during visits on several occasions in April and June 2013 the bar showed a good range of ales (nearly 10 on tap) including Boondoggle, Snecklifter, EPA, many more. Only once saw a pump not in use. Cider included Moonshine. Service responsive and polite, pub atmosphere oldie worldie with interesting pictures on walls. Beer garden overlooks the ferry landing and river and pleasant when there isn't a gale blowing off the river. Awkward steps to negotiate on way in and to the toilets if disabled.

The Inn and Bistro, Strathyre

Bit dated interior, two real ales on when I visited last weekend both at 4.3%. otherwise lagers and whiskies. When I was in there was a wedding party in and it was a bit overcrowded but everyone was freindly. Meals served were excellent quality and reasonably priced. There's an outside seated garden area hidden up stairs to the back of the bar which was large and offered great views over the roofs to the nearby mountains, but unfortunately no lighting when it gets dark so potential to fall down the stairs again. Seems to close only when the last drinker wishes to leave.

BTW the information on rail metro etc at top is outdated. Take metro system into South Shields Town Centre, then head toward Market, then simply turn toward MIll Dam past St Hilda's church, & large 24hr Asda Store, past the Riverside pub. Or make bee line for Customs House or Ferry landing and you can't go far wrong (both signposted)

Joe the landlord has tackled the male toilet problems and its regularly got toilet blocks -and as an added help there's a automated sensor on the wall dispensing pongy stuff -but occasionally needs a hand with an extra press of the button ..LOL. In addition, the duke box can download your choice of music from the web (takes a while though), and there's now another flat screen TV at the right of the bar to compliment the large screen at the far end. Never a bad pint served and recently the 3rd time in a row regional CAMRA winner in 2011. Shipbuilding and marine memorabilia everywhere and if your ex navy your ships crest is sure to be there.

The White Lion Hotel, Castlefield

What a good pub should be. Real Ale at a decent price and spot on. Loads of memerobilia on the wals, including photos of Cantana, Giggs and other greats visiting the pub. Convivial locals willing to extend a warm welcome and a dj playing not too loud music out into the beer garden..

Wow...Walks in, seems a pub of character and loads of over 30's in...Drunk manager staring out the two big guys next to me waiting to get served at bar, mouthing presumed obscenities at them to goad them into a fight, then tries it with me, 10 minutes later, staff still ignoring requests for service, still unserved, and about to give up and leave, he then comes over to the big guys and tries to grab them and pull them over bar, whilst snearing all along...then decides we were'nt there for trouble shakes their hands, and tells staff to serve us...Is this a typical Manc welcome??? floor filthy, toilets overflowing, ...pint average....never again....

The Steamboat, South Shields

Only real character pub left in Shields CAMRA regional winner past two years. Superb range of beers and helpful staff and a freindly atmosphere gauranteed. Only negative point -the mens toilets are a disgrace -take a gas mask and wear gloves...

Molly Malone's, Prague, 1

Over priced lager at 50 Ck per pint. Hard to locate as down a small side street from a small square a fair distance off the normal tourist haunts. (several others in my party agreed to meet here and wasted hours locating it), not helped by the Irish flag identifying it being hidden by an overgrown tree. Step past the drunks lying on the squares bench seat (two days running they were there) and enter a pub wich hasn't anything to recommend it. Walls filthy, windows so bad that we couldn't see that it was raining outside. My recommendation - Don't waste the trip to find it. It scores one solely because intermittant viewing of the British GP was on.

The Lion Inn, Blakey Ridge

Brilliant pub, been visiting for years. good range of beers, very friendly when not too packed and if you stop overnight out of season, not only do you get the moors and walks to yourself (absolute silence and 40 mile views) but the breakfast they serve would sink a battleship, it's MASSIVE. One of the best pubs in Britain.
