BTW the information on rail metro etc at top is outdated. Take metro system into South Shields Town Centre, then head toward Market, then simply turn toward MIll Dam past St Hilda's church, & large 24hr Asda Store, past the Riverside pub. Or make bee line for Customs House or Ferry landing and you can't go far wrong (both signposted) bbcbcbsc - 2 Sep 2011 18:10
Joe the landlord has tackled the male toilet problems and its regularly got toilet blocks -and as an added help there's a automated sensor on the wall dispensing pongy stuff -but occasionally needs a hand with an extra press of the button ..LOL. In addition, the duke box can download your choice of music from the web (takes a while though), and there's now another flat screen TV at the right of the bar to compliment the large screen at the far end. Never a bad pint served and recently the 3rd time in a row regional CAMRA winner in 2011. Shipbuilding and marine memorabilia everywhere and if your ex navy your ships crest is sure to be there. bbcbcbsc - 2 Sep 2011 18:06
Superb pub. Great choice of beers (real ales) and usual lagers. Basic choice of food but this is a drinking place! if you want something to eat go to near by ocean road for a smashing curry. The staff are always very friendly the pubs visitors always seem to be canny and occasionally very amusing. Excellent jukebox, plenty of interesting and weird stuff to look at on the walls and ceiling (flag collection).9/10. northeastfatties - 30 Jun 2011 11:03
My South Shields crawl had started to improve drastically at the Trimmers Arms (not listed on here) and peaked here at the Steamboat. Of the 14 I tried, this was the best. Real ales were Everards Tiger & Original, Greene King Abbot Ale, Deuchars IPA, Timothy Taylor Landlord, Wells Bombardier and Okells Red. Westons Old Rosie is the cider. The barmaid and customers were all friendly. The interior is fascinating with walls crammed full of clocks and shields and cabinets also packed with various items. The pub is nearly all wood, from the floors to the walls and the bar itself. A collection of flags can be seen on the ceiling. The pub seems to have won plenty of CAMRA awards and I would say it is a deserved winner of the current CAMRA local pub of the year. blue_scrumpy - 25 Nov 2010 21:26
Traditional character pub, a short walk from the ferry landing in the conservation area of town. It's deceptively long and large, with two main areas, a lower bar area and a higher area at the back with several different rooms. Both areas are packed with maritime memorabilia and a vast array of clocks, which gives a lot of character to the place, as does the dark wood panelling and traditional furnishings throughout. Beer-wise it's excellent, with 6 handpumps providing microbrewed ales from near and far. On my visit a dark beers festival had just finished, and these featured heavily. All i tried were excellent. This is the best pub in South Shields and one of the best on Tyneside, and as such you should try to get here. Carlurmston - 21 Aug 2010 10:30
