Alfies, Winchester

Decent atmosphere - usually more of a student crowd, but far from being the worst place for a drink in Winchester.

The Wykeham Arms, Winchester

Pricey but worth visiting - a real Winchester institution.

Beers are pretty good and the food is excellent, though you generally have to book in advance if you want to eat during the busiest times of the week, unless you opt for the bar snack sausages (as mentioned by a previous reviewer).

Bakers Arms, Winchester

An interesting experience - locals are a "lively" bunch.

The Slug and Lettuce, Winchester

Standard Slug & Lettuce. Over-priced and lacking in real ale. All attempted style, no substance.

The King Alfred, Winchester

This pub largely retains popularity with locals thanks to its extensive beer garden and child-friendly play area out the back.

Pub itself is not particularly special. Food can be above average but quality does seem to vary.

William Walker, Winchester

Decent pub but a mixed crowd mean that the atmosphere can be very variable.

St James Tavern, Winchester

A nice little pub, a short walk from the city centre.

The pub gets incredibly popular on quiz nights (currently Mondays), but service is friendly and a decent selection of ales. Also serves some of the best Guinness in Winchester.

The Old Vine, Winchester

I think some of the review of The Vine are a bit harsh.

Since the latest refurbishment, the pub is certainly a more pleasant place to drink (and eat, for that matter).

The Timothy Taylors Landlord is indeed a fine pint, while the food served is of a very high standard.

Savannah, Winchester

Now thankfully closed.

Old Gaol House, Winchester

Wetherspoons. Cheap. What more is there to say? The beer festival here sees a good selection of real ales.

Largely popular with students and those looking for lengthy, cheap drinking sessions.

The Railway Inn, Winchester

This is a pub that is largely aimed at Winchester's students, but is no worse for it. The big draw here is the music room out the back, which has hosted a number of top brands (largely before they were famous).

Pleasantly surprising selection of real ales, some of which you won't find anywhere else in the city.

The Crown and Anchor, Winchester

Visited for a recent Friday night drinking session. The staff were friendly and there were plenty of them, meaning that bar service was pretty quick, despite the pub being fairly busy.

Decent selection of real ales, but largely the same as every other Greene King pub in Winchester.

Music was "interesting" and wouldn't suit all tastes (mixture of cheesey '80s stuff and a dance selection).

The Blonde Beer Cafe, Winchester

Hard to recommend. Definitely a bar, rather than a pub. The bar has a distinct lack of real ales, but an abundance of chavs.

Pity the poor people living in nearby residential streets.

The Bishop On The Bridge, Winchester

Fullers pub that is located next to the Itchen Navigation. The pub has a decent rear patio/garden area, with outdoor heatings, making it a good location for summer nights.

Food is currently of a decent standard (though it has had its ups and downs).
