The Rose and Crown, Southwark

Sad to see the negative reviews - the staff and landlord/lady are some of the most customer sensitive I have ever met and would only serve regulars before strangers if the strangers had been a bit too diffident or undecided to show up on the radar. Yes they do run out of beer because when large parties descend on them the pub is not always told in advance (which is a courtesy I always extend to any pub if I have a group) and their regular clientele has diminished quite a bit as the new towers have gone up so they don't stock as high as others might. Change of management coming soon and I wonder if the standard can be maintained?

The Castle, Holborn

Very friendly local with a wide range of beers (mainly golden at this time of year) - immediately offered a taste without prompting - old fashioned decor but very up to date otherwise.

The Masons Arms, Solihull

Surprisingly good venue given the first impression of youngsters coming and going for the music/dance area on the right - but they had really excellent beer (Black Sheep bitter), friendly and prompt service, the WI/Australian test match on (with no noise from the music area to interfere with it) and the crowd were friendly as well. Well worth a visit.

Platforms, Basingstoke

A little gem of a meeting place ot after work haven. Not in the station but under it (the old parcels depot I believe).

Friendly staff and a wide selection of wines and bottled beers. Food is good but the best dishes run out quickly.

Live music on Tuesday evenings and at the weekend and a wide screen for footie when that is on.

Intimate atmosphere when there's no footie or music and bigger than it first looks.

The Alehouse, Reading

Love the place - good range of very well kept beers - often more than one choice of darker beer. Staff are very much themselves - I have always found them courteous and friendly but they don't like people who carry themselves as God's gift to the pub trade.

The toilets are primitive but the little back rooms are a joy. Don't go if you like All Bar One's - go there instead!

The Island Queen, Islington

A really good mixture of modern approach - draught continental beer as well as English, unusual menu - but in a traditional setting beaurifully decorated.

Service friendly and unhurried rather than slow and lots of room for big parties and spaces for the more private to sit.

The Old Red Lion, Islington

Still a good pub in that the beer is reliable and the food is good if narrower in range now. It's not as crowded as before but that may be because the welcome is more functional than it used to be - even for regulars.

The decor is very knocked about - be wary of the bench seats they are very damaged in places.

The theatre upstairs is always good value.

The Harlequin, City

A quiet, old fashioned local but with well kep beers and a good range of food. Godd sized helpings and a blazing fire in winter.

Settees at the back of the bar and pavement tables in the summer - until at present (the local council may ban these soon).

A change from the busy high Street bars nearer the Angel tube station.

The Charles Dickens, Southwark

Went in here for Sunday lunch whilst visiting London - really great. Excellent range of beers - the two I tried were in excellent condition. The Sunday lunch was amazing value as well as beautifully cooked - the staff were friendly and very helpful - wished I could have stayed all day.

I don't recall the music being on that day.

Stamford's Wine Bar, Southwark

I really like this place and hace been using it for years for all sorts of accasions and none. The outside is off-putting but when did that mean anything? The prices are designed to keep out the "pub trade2 as it sees itself as up market of that and has no draught beers.

Good selection of wines and a really first class house wine set. Very friendly place with more intimate booths if needed.

The food is excellent and generously portioned - the barmaids match - need i say more wink! wink! They have a 2 for 1 ofer for early evening meals at present.

They do treat newcomers as if they were regulars and you may need to book for a lunch time table.

The Mad Hatter Hotel, Southwark

Very convenient although can be crowded on a work day lunchtime. Beer id well kept (all Fullers) and food is standard "Ale & Pie" stuff so a bit pricey. Nice for a group drinking session - there a big tables but not for a quiet tete-a-tete.

Doggetts Coat and Badge, Southwark

I have used it off and on and only when someone else insists on using it as a meeting place to move on from.

The beers can be unusual but are after drawn short of a pint and the service as said elsewhere can be very tight lipped - you sometimes feel that you are an interruption to a previously pleasant day!

The food is good but slow to arrive and thus lukewarm occasionally.

Not worth going out of your way for.
