Good beer, good food and good service at this pleasant pub. Eight of us had lunch

The Monsal Head Hotel, Monsal Head

Good pub with good beer and food. Nice service and in a great location. They looked after 11 of us well after we had walked from Tideswell.

The George, Alstonefield

The pub is probably good but the manager isn't. I phoned a week ahead to check that they could feed and water a group of 11 walkers. The manager was downright negative - we don't do tables for 11 (no problem), will there definitely be 11? (God willing), you need to pre-order food (I sent email at her request asking for the menu - no response).
So we took sandwiches and enjoyed them at Milldale Bridge and then visited the George just to quench our thirst. You would think that pubs would need the business.

Ye Olde Royal Oak Inn, Wetton

Great pub with good local beer, excellent food and pleasant service. The landlord took on the pub 3 months ago and is making a good job of it, giving our group of 11 walkers a warm welcome. Food service was rapid and exceeded expectations.

I had been wary of booking at the pub when reading Dennis' comment of September 2013 and mentioned the comment to the landlord, Ian. He was aware of the comment but believed that a misunderstanding had occurred because there is more than one Royal Oak in the area with similar postcode.

Whatever, I can confirm that Ye Olde Royal Oak, Wetton is alive and well and definitely worth a visit. It was our best pub in a week of walking the Peak District.

The Oak, Aston Clinton

Good pub with good food and good beer. There were 11 of us for lunch. We were well looked after

The Castle, Notting Hill

I was not impressed by the manager who wanted to boss customers into doing things his way and to his time - what price the customer? Also the initial bill (for 7 of us) overcharged by £20. Otherwise the beer was OK (Doom Bar) and the food was good.

The Ferry Inn, St Dogmaels

Back in summer the Ferry Inn was recommended to us and what a great recommendation it was. We were a dozen walkers and arrived about 2pm eager to sup the beer and eat the food. It was busy but the lady behind the bar kept a cool head and took all our orders even though we arrived in ones and twos. We sat on the deck overlooking the river which was an extremely pleasant setting to refresh ourselves with excellent food and beer.

The Southwark Tavern, London Bridge

Market Porter had a large group in on the Sunday lunchtime when we arrived so we ended up moving along to the Southwark Tavern. There were 10 of us and they quickly pointed us to space to sit for lunch and a drink. Service was good and pleasant and the beer and food were good. We were pleased.

The Mayflower, Rotherhithe

Smashing pub and very friendly. I have eaten and drunk here before but recently on a Sunday afternoon, we wanted just a swift half or cup of coffee. The place was heaving but they were undaunted and pointed us to the deck where they would bring our drinks to us. Grab a blanket as you go there was the clincher. Fabulous service with a smile and interesting building

Black Horse, North Greenford

Fullers pub with good beer and good food. 12 of us walkers arrived at 2pm and they fed and watered us well

Rose and Crown, Ivinghoe

A group of 13 of us enjoyed a good Sunday lunch and the beer was good - oh and puddings were wonderful. All went away satisfied although if we had been in a hurry the service would have seemed a bit slow. This 17th century pub was apparently refurbished and reopened in 2009. It is tucked away in the delightful village of Ivinghoe and doesn't collect passing trade. Well worth seeking out.

The Star, Godalming

A group of 8 of us walkers descended on the Star for lunch last week, having phoned ahead. It is clearly a good locals pub and we enjoyed good beer and good food in a pleasant pub. Service was good too.
