The Onslow Arms, West Clandon

The pub remains closed. After a period of inactivity there is currently some building work going on. There is still no indication as to who has taken over the property.

The Jovial Sailor, Ripley

Just visited in the early afternoon. The pub had reopened after being closed for a week's makeover. We were greeted by an unsmiling and abrupt manger who asked in a loud voice if we were eating. We had planned on doing so but given his manner we decided not to. As there were only four customers in the pub I can't see the significance of whether we were eating or not.

The interior is a redecorated and smartened up version of the previous one. It seems unfortunate that Chef & Brewer did not use the time that the pub was closed for staff customer service training.

The Saddlers Arms, Ripley

A good country pub with friendly staff and reasonably priced freshly cooked food. Always a friendly welcome. Seats under cover outside for smokers. Dogs are welcome. Toilets could do with a makeover.

The Merry Harriers, Hambledon

A great country pub with a good atmosphere, but the dining area was cold. We had to wait 35 minutes for our food (without pre warning or apology the delay). The bacon on the bacon stilton & rockette salad was initially undercooked. 12 for 6oz burger is excessive even if it is from a top local butcher. The hot beef sandwich (on a baguette) was very good and reasonably priced at 5.

The Compasses Inn, Gomshall

We visited here at lunchtime and planned to eat. The drinks were overpriced and the staff unwelcoming.

The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common

We visited this pub at lunchtime on a sunny day in March. It was almost empty. The bar smelt of rancid fat. The staff were unwelcoming. Menus were on curled up sheets of paper. The staff appeared to treat the customers as an inconvenience. When someone phoned to make a reservation for Sunday evening the reply was 'we only serve food Monday to Friday'. A once great pub now to be avoided.
