Now on my 5th visit here and frankly I’ve been delaying comment, thinking they must fall down on something. But they haven’t, and I now ask ‘Is this the best run pub in Surrey? ‘(and I reckon I’ve visited 200+ since I retired ). Food (calves liver was the best of 4 superb meals), range of beer (served at the correct temperature – other landlords please note) and service have all been first class on every visit. Mrs X Guvnor agrees (a rarity). Friendly, chatty staff and a great atmosphere on every visit, day or night. This pub gets a 9 from me and that’s only because I don’t give 10’s. I see that it’s been a finalist in a couple of industry awards – well deserved.

A couple of general points on previous posts (the majority of which are positive):
Susan Kings writes ‘mediocre food’, ‘poor service’ and ‘very overpriced’ and then goes on to talk about loyal customers. Well, sorry but if you get product and price wrong AND add in bad service, it doesn’t matter if you’re a plumber, a pub or the Ford Motor Co, you simply don’t have any loyal customers. My only complaint about this place is that it’s SO popular, parking can be a bind.

Susan also moans that it’s £4 for a pint of larger (sic) – it isn’t, it’s £3.50 or £3.70 for two of the offerings according to the price list. It’s over £4 for a Peroni (where isn’t it? Over £5 at two Guildford pubs and £5.80 at one in Ripley). The point about this is that this isn’t something to moan about - it’s all about choice and it has long been some people’s choice to drink expensive lager – remember when Stella was advertised as ‘reassuringly expensive’? Two decades before that, we had Lowenbrau with ads carrying the strapline: ‘the most expensive lager in the world’. And a word from the trade which will surprise many – the mark-up on those premium lagers is less than on most ales, so the price is actually totally justifiable - it's horses for courses and the horses that like 5.5% lagers are happy to fork out £4 or £5 whereas your general ale drinkes baulk at much over £3 and a bit.

PS – Really nice garden too.

Nice to see how well this pub has come along in the last year or so. Very friendly staff and a great selection of ales and cider. The management at the White Horse in neighbouring Hascombe should take notice as this pub shows good attention to detail but most importantly it delivers consistently. Moreover, the beer garden catches plenty of evening sun in summer - a lovely place to visit with some terrific walks to be had just beyond the front door.

Went here for the first time in years at the week-end and they had a Stones tribute band gig in the garden. Brilliant atmosphere and everyone seemed genuinely appreciative of the 'new' landlord and landlady's refurb (the gig apparently celebrated 2 years). Let's all be honest, it used to be awful!

Visited this pub tonight. Colin and his wife Julie are really making an effort to keep a country pub going. Support them, or lose them. Don't knock two hardworking people who are giving it a go, just because they don't crawl to CAMRA people. Leave them alone. Tried all beers and they were all in good condition. Would highly recommend them.

ok it was never the best pub in the world, but it did use to have atmosphere, and it was still a pub, visited today, it was like the first pub on the moon, no atmosphere at all. food was overpriced and luke warm, unfortunatelly so was the beer!, i won't be going back to this "country restaurant"
