This pub is a modernised local with a lounge at the front and a public bar and games room to the rear. Two uninspiring beers were on - Greene King IPA & Fullers London Pride. Addlestones was the cider. The lounge lacked any atmosphere at all. So we moved to the bar, where there was slightly more life. Not really my kind of pub. blue_scrumpy - 7 Jan 2011 21:43
Haven't been in for a while, but further improvements have been made since I last visited. Popped in for a beer and a bite last night, and they've installed a real fire, and the pub is now "Cask Marque". Menu has changed too. Currently serving GK IPA, London Pride and Doom Bar. Would recommend the pie and mash, and a pint of Doom Bar.....lovely triumph - 9 Dec 2010 23:11
With reference to Steamer1 - lets not compare a restaurant that sells beer to a pub that sells food. However I do agree that the range of ales on sale at the Refectory are superb. The food is cheaper at the Star though. The Star is getting more popular by the week. The beers have changed now to Ringwood Best, Sharps Doombar and Hogs Back TEA. Had the TEA last night - very nice. Have eaten there on a number of occasions and have pretty much worked my way through the menu. All the dishes I've had have been tasty, although it could do with a refresh every now and then. triumph - 11 Sep 2010 13:27
Being the nearest pub to our house I wish the the new management well. Having said that we were disappointed when going for a meal and a few beers to find the choice very boring/predictable on the beerfront with 2 from Cornwall. Having said that the Tribute was excellent. it would nice to see more imagination in the choice. The competion in the revived Refectory in Milford is considerable. 2 people (the only others there) who seemed to know the new management were discussing that they couldn't see what had been done to the Refectory during it's short closure. Well whatever it was it's worked so try looking a little closer like the superb choice of beers on offer including local ales. I've been going to the Star since 1981 and we used to go twice a week for a beer and one of those would be for a meal. The choice initially wasn't good but improved immensely when the beer orders came in but then the two guys who ran it signed a new lease with S and N, I believe, limiting the choice of guest beers to that predictable list again and boy you should have seen the customers walk away. Things have really changed little despite management changes and expensive refits. It isn't always about the decor and fittings. I've been to some right dumps over the years that are heaving with customers. While I appreciate the new found quality in the ale we won't be going back often if there is nothing to excite the tastebuds and not withstanding the comments of "triumph" we probably are not alone. whilst we there a couple came in and after a look at the bar and/or menu walked out. I rest my case. Steamer1 - 16 Aug 2010 11:16
I've been back several times and can't fault the place. The beers, whilst the same selection as before are well kept, and they now have a very decent chef. Varied menu with interesting twists like sweet potato chips, plus the normal roasts on a Sunday. Beer garden and childrens play area at the back too. triumph - 10 Aug 2010 22:45
