The, Gants Hill

This is a very unassuming bar from the outside, but, within, a friendly crowd (and great, friendly and helpful staff!) and a good selection of real ales. It's a bit small, yes, but it has a big heart. One complaint - the Wild West saloon doors to the men's loo; please get rid of them! :-)

The Tottenham, Soho

The basement is quite a pleasant, quiet, place, for one of the Tottenham`s delicious pie meals, and I would definitely recommend it for escaping the heaving crowds of Oxford Street.

Crobar, Soho

I`m a gay man, and went there with a black, dreadlocked, straight woman, and we both felt very comfortable here. It`s relaxed and friendly, and would definitely recommend it.

Yes, the loo`s are a bit grim, though, it must be said...

The Cove, Covent Garden

I recently returned to The Cove for the first time for quite a while, and was gobsmacked to find that I was being charged 3.60 for a *lager shandy*. It wasn`t even a pint of 100% beer. The prices have risen dramatically across the board, including, it seems the food. Even by West End standards, that was a tad steep.

Very disappointed.

The Cove, Covent Garden

I love The Cove; the pasties are delicious, and not heated to the nigh-on molten lava temperatures that the West Cornwall Pasty Company shops usually work to. The real ale is lovely, and a great complement to the pasties. The terrace is a great spot to people-watch, eat and drink, and be sociable, on a warm summers day. The downside is, as virtually every other poster has commented, the ridiculously loud music (totally unnecessary for such a small pub), and occasionally having to wait quite some time to be served. Please, owners - take note!

First Out Cafe Bar, Soho

I have a real soft spot for First Out. It`s a friendly, relaxed, atmosphere that is very woman-oriented. However, men are welcome. The one downside is that the food, whilst very nice, is a bit pricy; even for the West End.

Comptons Of Soho, Soho

Can be very cruisy, and desperately crowded, but if you can get a seat, it can be pleasant enough. Upstairs can be a nice place to meet people, and very comfortable.

Fitzroy Tavern, Fitzrovia

Well, I do like the Fitzroy, but it can get terribly crowded. It`s a friendly, convivial, and *very* cheap place to drink. The staff are often overworked, however, but I have to say that I`ve never once experienced any rudeness, even when it`s obvious that they are working their arses off.

The Quebec, Marble Arch

I`m sorry to read of the landlord`s death; I didn`t know him, or hear of some of the problems that others have described.

However, I would say that, on the few occasions I`ve been there, I`ve found it an uncomfortable and not-altogether-pleasant experience. Being in my early 30`s, I felt very out of place, and was stared at constantly by the older gentlemen there. The drinks were pricy, and the barman (who, it seemed, couldn`t speak much English) placed my change in a tips box, right there in front of me. He didn`t even acknowledge me! Even in the afternoon, rentboys could be seen around the bar.

I do hope that things change now. As sad as the landlord`s death is; perhaps now is the time for a change of style. There is obviously a place needed for older blokes, and that`s fine; however, it`s clear that there were problems.

The College Arms, Bloomsbury

I work at the College of Law, and can assure you that the majority of our students aren`t as many people describe them here. Of course, some of them are loud; they`re students after all. A group not exactly known for being shrinking violets! For an unpretentious, standard student boozer, it`s perfectly fine. If you`re looking for anything trendy, or hip, or an old-style pub, then look elsewhere.

The Kings Arms, Soho

It can get terribly crowded in the evenings, and also, crucially, they take away the chairs after 6pm. It`s a friendly enough place, and if I sit in there long enough, I usually see at least one person I know. Upstairs can be a bit less crowded.

The Cock Tavern, Hackney

No airs and graces, but a friendly enough place, where you won`t get hassled, and you can just sit down and soak up the genuine Hackney atmosphere
