The Shepherd and Dog, Ballards Gore

Visited on 25 May in the course of a walk. The manager could not have been more friendly and pleasant, the food was excellent and the beer very good too. Will be arranging another walk soon to revisit this great pub.

Red Lion, Chalton

Went there yesterday evening (as part of a group of 6) for a meal halfway through a Halloween moonlight walk. The beer and food were both excellent, but what made it such an enjoyable meal was that though we were eating in the (quite smart) restaurant in our somewhat dishevilled walking attire (and boots) there was none of the feeling of being made unwelcome that, alas, is so often present in these circumstances. On the contrary, the staff could not have been more welcoming and hospitable. So, top marks Red Lion, and I look forward to many happy returns. (Incidentally, the toilets, always a useful indicator in a pub, could have withstood an inspection by an Admiral of the Fleet.)

The Cat Inn, West Hoathly

Went there at lunchtime on Saturday 19th Jan. Lovely open fire, comfortable surroundings, very good food and beer, and a genuinely warm welcome from the staff. We could have happily stayed there all afternoon if we hadnt had to walk another six miles before dark.

The White Swan, Islington

This is a convenient pub for me, being by Highbury & Islington tube which is on my way home from work, but it seems to me to lack atmosphere and be rather noisy - I suppose the open plan scheme (I think it used to be a cinema?) is to blame. But as with other Wetherspoons the beer is good and cheap and I concur with Gordonferry's approval of the Curry Club food.

The Royal Oak, Lasham

What a great pub. Five real ales, one from just four miles down the road, and though I only tried two they were both excellent. Lovely garden with a choice of sun or shade, and landlord and staff really friendly. Real ales all seemed to be 2.50 which if you've come from London seems pretty reasonable. The only niggle is, I was a bit disappointed in my bacon, brie and cranberry sauce baguette, but I was with a party of nine, and everyone else cleared their plates with enthusiasm, so it may just have been me. But I'll certainly go back.

The Railway Arms, Alton

I would fully endorse the comments below. The pub has real charm, and the real ales are very reasonably priced. When I visited yesterday the conservatory was being rebuilt, but it looks as if it will be really nice once it has been. Friendly staff and locals.

The Amazon and Tiger, Harvel

Spacious, comfortable pub with good food and real ale (Holy Smoke, but I think this was probably a guest beer.) I found the staff perfectly friendly (this was at lunchime on Sunday) and a Jack Russell almost excessively so. There is a painting inside illustrating the pub's name: an Amazon and tiger pose by a sea wall with the warships Amazon and Tigre in the background, signed Carolus pinxit MCMXCVI.

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

Dropped in on Saturday for lunch. Excellent food in generous portions, and a surprising number of real ales for what is after all a small rural pub. Will certainly arrange to revisit on another walk.
