The Victoria Stakes, Muswell Hill

Picture the scene, the secretariat of the SGLA decides to indulge in a spot of bourgeois decadence and indulge in some scran at Victoria Stakes. It was a beautiful summer's day, and out we ventured onto the patio. Clearly the waitress was confused to see two young men dining together, and approached us with what could only be described as a mixture of caution and curiosity.

Food was tasty, I'll concede... but once the lamb's livers were cleared and the remnants of the roasts returned to the kitchen, I had no room for afters. Ma camarada, however, ordered some sorbet for himself, at which point the waitress asked if we wanted two spoons.

Oh, how I laughed. But not as much as when she smacked her buttocks into the table adjacent to ours and knocked all the condiments to the floor.

I will never return owing to their prices, it ain't for me. But for the experience alone I'll give it a good mark. Well done.

O's Bar, Crouch End

One of a handful of late licenced venues in the area. And it sucks shit. Have never eaten there, but it is cold, bland, full of canutes and appears to be run by the door staff as opposed to management. Crouch End is crap for a drink, anyway.

Sarah Moore, Leigh On Sea

Boring.

The Kings Head, Islington

Yep. It is a sign of the times when the only proper pub in the area is the one with a theatre out the back. Proper jokes of a venue, old school till, great music (saw some random swamp rock/ cajun jazz stuff down there the other night. Staff are pretty rubbish, I agree, but the atmsophere is generated purely by the random cross-section of society frequenting said establishment.

As for you, "foxski", methinks you give the game away when you said "I bought a PUB, sat down at the bar..." owner of a rival business interest per chance, hmm?

I'll shut up now. Not the sort of place where you get little plastic straws in a "classy" black holder on the bar with serviettes and stuff. No, they don't take cards. Thank fjuk.

Chapter One, Finsbury Park

What happened to this place?

The beautiful east european bar staff?

The late licence that never was?

Lock ins until seven in the morning?

The managerial history as colourful as the Queen Vic?

Cocaine in the disabled toilets?

I'll tell you what's happened. iT's been cleaned up. And whilst for many people- myself included- this has proven a crushing blow, for the vast majority it has led to great improvements in this quirky bar.

Nice place. Just isn't as fun as it used to be.

The Stapleton Tavern, Finsbury Park

Sorry folks, going to have to do it.

You are all so very nice. You all have very good hair and teeth.

Your customers likewise. Shiny, happy people, dreaming of the day when they hit pay dirt and the flat over the hill (and far away) becomes a reality.

The toilets are clean. The bar is clean. The floor is so clean I once ate my 8 Sausage and Mash off the floor. Management did not approve.

So why do I feel the need to wash whenever I enter the premises?

(maybe because of some sub-concious class inferiority complex? or because I just feel to dirty to part of the surroundings).

Oh well. Maybe one day I'll be able to really appreciate this type of environment, an environment so bland they even offer board games to help you while away the hours spent nursing your 3 pint of FOSTERS.

...Bar Maids are, indeed, the finest in the area.

The Old Dairy, Finsbury Park

I think this debate is in danger of getting out of hand. I do not think it is particularly constructive to brand a whole label as a shit hole, especially one such as Stroud Green Road, where you have some really friendly local businessmen and a genuine sense of community. Yes, there are lunatics. There aren't many places in London where you don't have to "avoid the crack-heads" these days, and unless one has the cash to retreat into the more salubrious suburbs, then it is a part of life with which we have to contend.

I imagine it is in these salubrious suburbs that Mr. Anon 5 April now resides, gracing the dark pit of Finsbury Park intermittently, to visit the Faltering FULL Back. Yeah, nice place, but I think many people in the area will agree that it has its own clique and if you're not part of it it is a far less inviting place. Just an opinion.

Anyway, I like the Dairy. It's not the best pub in the world but it is certainly a lot more interesting than anywhere else in the area. And to all the "i once saw a gypsy trying to pick pocket someone ion there, I did" wake up to the reality of modern urban living. If you don't like it, f**k off somewhere more sanitised.
