The Retreat, Reading

Was in here recently for the Jazz afternoon and tried all the real ales which were all in excellent condition. The music was brilliant too. A proper pub in my view and the best Real Ale pub in Reading.

The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak

I popped in here last week for the first time on hearing this place is a new kid on the block. 8 Real ciders and 7 Real Ales. I was impressed with the quality. A one roomed bar with plenty going for it. The new owners deserve to do well.

The Hand and Heart, Peterborough

I popped in hear one Saturday recently on hearing that new management have taken it over and I can say I was very impressed with the improvement. The Real Ales, my favourite tipple, were all in excellent condition. Keep up the good work. Is also a very historical pub too with 2 rooms and a drinking corridor, quite rare for the south!

The Alehouse, Reading

Popped in here recently on reading that this place has got better but I am afraid it hasn't. The one beer I had was off, perhaps I was unlucky. Very expensive for the beer too.

The Rake, London Bridge

This is a great little bar. It services a niche market and they are all the better for it. The draught American and Belgium beers are great

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Although I have commented before in February, I must add that this establishment keeps getting better. Was in yesterday and the real ale quality and range were excellent. 8 Real Ales. It deserves the plaudits and accolades bestowed upon it. Keep up the good work.

Ye Olde Smugglers Inn, Alfriston

Visited this pub whilst out walking on Saturday. 4 Real Ales on and the 2 I tried in very good order. Ate hear as they were having a pie week special. Food was superb, had rabbit pie with proper pastry and vegatables. I will visit here again.

The Old Fountain, Old Street

Visited here recently and there was 8 Real Ales on. The ones I tried were all in excellent condition, very good variety too. Pub was busy which is good to see. The place is slightly off the main road, about 20yards but I know friends have missed where it is. Worth a visit but remember it does close on weekends.

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

As you must all know by now, this pub has recently won the National CAMRA Real Ale Pub of the Year and is well deserved. Descriptions below describe this place better than I can, just an excellent pub. Have been here over 30 times and I live in London. Sheffield in general is an amazing place for good pubs, keep up the good work and I look forward to my next visit.

The Bull, Horton Kirby

Hi, last Thursday I walked for 2 1/4 hours to this pub cross fields and yonder. It was well worth it, the Real Ale was excellent and tremendous range so much so that I missed last bus back into town so walked all the way back again! I look forward to trying the food. Guess what I am doing the same today as this pub is a must visit in my opinion for Real Ale drinkers everywhere.

The Star, Godalming

I was looking forward to this pub with all the good publicity it has. Unfortunately I was disappointed, both my friend and I were later ill from the cider/perry we drank, rainlight- there was more than just acetone in the Gwatkins Oldfield Perry, it was still there Saturday and long past its best. Not to be put off we did venture to some food only to find the the burger burnt to charcoal. What a shame I will keep looking for good pubs in the area as I will not waste my hard earned money in here again.

The Hare and Hounds, East Sheen

Is it true about the rumour that Youngs have made a
planning application submitted on this pub? Where a refurbishment planned by owners Young's which will remove the 1930's separate public bar described as a remarkable survival from its day? Yet more English pub Heritage being destroyed by Youngs? Any more information from anyone?

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

Found this place for the first time a few weeks back on a mystery tour of pubs in the area during the week. Naturally it was fairly quiet but I was most impressed at the quality of the beers. Mainly Dark Star, although I am a fan of their beers. 1 guest on although there maybe more at a weekend. I will visit this place again. Cheers!!

The Evening Star, Brighton

Fantastic pub and is always a first and last call for me when I visit Brighton. Excellent quality and range of real ales. I am a big fan of Dark Star beers generally plus is nice to try some of the interesting Foreign beers they have from time to time. My girlfriend also likes that you have real cider and perry too. For me a must visit on the south coast.

Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon

You might all be interested to know that recently this pub won CAMRA Greater London Pub of the Year 2008 for its quality and variety of Real Ales. I am amazed how such a small pub can survive in these times but if you keep to basics and look after your beers, customers and atmosphere you can't go wrong. They now go into the next level of competition as a top 16 entry in the country. Well done the Traf!!!
