The Affleck Arms, Dalham

Very much a local village pub, with a good atmosphere but the landlord described this as "a drinkers' pub" - only sandwiches available, even on Sunday. Limited opening hours.

The Red Lion, Swaffham Prior

Called here at noon and again at about 5.00 p.m. last Friday whilst out cycling. Enjoyed the lighter Batemans option available. A nice homely, unpretentious atmosphere, with a friendly reception behind the bar. Slightly disappointed not to have any snacks other than crisps etc. in the evening, but I was the only patron there at that time of the afternoon so I wouldn't expect the kitchen to be in action.

The Horseshoes, Billingford

PLEASE IGNORE COMMENT ABOUT BEING BOARDED UP - a technical glitch caused this comment to appear on the WRONG PUB!

I have tried to get the post removed via Support but with no luck.

The Kings Head (Low House), Laxfield

Called in for lunch yesterday. Continues to rank as my most favourite pub. Food well up to standard, Adnams fine, character timeless, staff very friendly and as mentioned in previous review, interior (and exterior!) beautifully preserved without in any way being tarted up or faked.

The White Hart, Aldeburgh

Called in briefly midday yesterday, looking for lunch - no food apart from from "filled rolls". Didn't stop, so can't comment on t'beer. Appeared to be a fairly "character-full" place, but nothing to make me feel I'd missed out.

The White Horse Inn, Badingham

Visited 25th April 2013 - sadly boarded up and for sale - another one bites the dust!

Visited 25th April 2013 - sadly, now boarded up and for sale - another one bites the dust!

The Angel Inn, Larling

Lunched here again Sept 2012 - continues to be very good. Unspoiled, friendly, country pub with character. Good ales, well kept; can't fault it

The Pheasant, Gestingthorpe

Still maintaining a high standard of food and drink, this friendly country pub has had rooms added in a refurbished annex and is apparently regularly full of residents looking for a country break. More a restaurant than a drinking place, it nevertheless retains a good degree of a pub atmosphere and the Adnams is well kept.

The Swan, Coney Weston

Called here Sept 2012 for some lunch. Fairly standard rural pub, not poshed up and with a pool table, slot machines and large screen tv. Food tended towards the "value for money" end of the spectrum; my friends reckoned the fish'n'chips were good, with home made batter and if you're into curries, etc. this is for you. Timothy Taylor Landlord as a guest ale, with Adnams, EPA and IPA

The George, New Buckenham

Note that this place is now called "Inn on the Green" following a makeover and appears to have gone gastro/upmarket. Not open when I passed by, so I cannot comment, but they have a website if you Google for it.

The Lion, Sudbury

Parked and went walking on Bank Holiday Monday before taking lunch. Atmosphere friendly, pretty busy. Young waiting staff very helpful. Food very good, though probably priced accordingly; my beef medallions very good, the wife's Stilton & asparagus quiche very tasty although she thought it would have been much improved had it been warm. Adnams satisfactory. Nicely situated, in a pleasant period building; a proper country pub.

The Red Lion, Hunningham

I've stopped for Sunday lunch here regularly three times a year for the last couple of years. Very nice location, pleasant to sit outside if the weather allows, quite a lot of seating inside and out, this is very much a "restaurant from a pub". Abbot ale was satisfactorily delivered, service was quick and it has nice touches such as quality newspapers and clean toilets. Food is well presented, but a bit "top end" and "gastro". It's always seemed very busy on Sundays and it's struck me as very family friendly; too much so, for me, since I've never had a meal here without having a toddler or young child sat at the next table. In fact this drove me away on Sunday without my dessert course and leaving a half drunk pint on the table - perhaps that says more about me than the "pub"!

A perfectly decent restaurant, with good, if pricey, food, but rather lacking in character apart from a very nice position beside the river.

The Bull Inn, Weston Under Wetherley

Still displaying "under new management" signs, I tried the Bull Inn on Sunday 24th July. Pretty busy, most people eating, with a pleasant, lively (but not raucous) atmosphere. Not a huge place, cosy and homely. Abbot ale perfectly well kept. I had only a bar snack to eat, which was well prepared and not excessively priced; they were happy to provide bar snacks, unlike many places which want to deliver only roasts on a Sunday. I'll certainly drop in again when passing.

Waggon and Horses, Linton

Stopped for a pint early evening whilst on a cycle ride. Austere bar populated by half a dozen locals glued to the footy on the small "widescreen" tv. Choice of IPA or "Old Squit" (I think) which was good. Landlord down to earth but helpful and willing to chat with a stranger, so despite the slightly strained atmosphere (they were losing) it felt comfortable. Have no doubt though that this is a drinking pub. Small garden out the back would be pleasant in good weather.

The Compasses, Littley Green

Great, traditional, old fashioned country pub. It's not been gastro-ised or mucked about with and retains the charm and charactor now sadly being lost elsewhere. The huffers (huge bap style bread buns) come in a variety of fillings are perhaps more of a novelty than truely memorable dishes, but go down well if you've a good hunger on and the beer is well kept and interesting.

The Compasses at Pattiswick, Pattiswick

An attractive exterior with convenient parking. As with so many "gastro-ised" places, it's now really a restaurant with bar rather than a drinking pub. Food is good; menu not too extensive and changed fairly often. Neither cheap nor outlandishly expensive. Staff are young and keen, friendly and attentive, if not always professionally polished - we are in the sticks after all!

We've eaten here regularly three or four times and it's always been reliable if not outstandingly memorable.
