The Havelock, Hastings

The reopened Havelock is a welcome addition to the Hastings real ale scene. Good pint of Timothy Taylors last week and also had Youngs Special and Harveys. It is sparsely furnished but clean and tidy with a large stock of spirits and cocktail mixers.

Mermaid Inn, Rye

More of a hotel bar than a pub, but with a great ancient fireplace burning huge logs in the winter and plenty of outside seating in the summer. The Harveys and London Pride are normally in good condition and conversation can be very interesting given the variety of clientele. Not cheap, but then nor are the surroundings!

The Dolphin Inn, Hastings

This is really good pub right in the heart of the fishing boat area of the old Town. Beers I've tried, Harveys and Hophead are well kept and the fish meals are excellent. Best of all are the pleasant and efficient staff who remember who you are and remember to provide an old guy with a jug for his Harveys even though I'm not there all that often. Other bars in Hastings have a lot to learn from this ace pub.

The John Harvey Tavern, Lewes

Thought this the best bar in Lewes, mainly because of the good beer. Nice atmosphere and not too crowded on a Sunday, when Lewes seems to close down!

The Tiger Inn, East Dean

In delightful setting on the Green at Est Dean near Becht Head. Very crowded on a Sunday lunch time but choice of real beer including Harveys and Adnams. Big choice of wines. Good looking food with home made fish soup and other specials reasonably priced. Seating outside. Parking tricky, so a good pub to walk too. Recommended

The Watermans Arms, Richmond

Seems a real locals pub, great for a chat and a pint of good Youngs ale. A few yards from the river and the much better known White Cross. This is my favourite in the area though and a good meeting spot.

The White Lion, Hampton in Arden

Very old pub, but been given a good restoration. Great stop off on the way to the NEC and Birmingham, has rooms, food and Black Sheep beer. I was impressed by friendly staff and would look for it again.

The Standard Inn, Rye

A very old building which remains a traditional pub with decent real ales, dart board and pool. Popular with locals of different ages. Music on Wednesday evenings. Lots of tourists Sunday lunch times. Rather hidden away patio at the back which is a good spot for an early evening drink in summer. Much improved since new landlord in 2004.

The Duke of Hamilton, Hampstead

Excellent Fullers beers, best London Pride for miles around. Nice rolls at lunch time.
Good mixture of locals from the trendy to the professional tothe unemployable. A serious pub for serious boozers. Some great sporting pictures on the walls, landlord (Woody) is very keen on his rugby and cricket. Theatre next door adds to the people mixture. Nice outside terrace with well maintained plants, good spot to while away time with a pint!

The Flask, Hampstead

The Youngs beer in the Flask is good these days, but it has been a more lively place in the past, pretty quiet on most week nights except Friday and Saturdays. Lager is quite expensive. Public bar is the locals haunt, but could do with some refurbishment. All day Sky News in there not much of an enticement. Food is reasonable quality and price for the area. Loos could be much better, Come on Youngs this is supposed to be a flag ship pub!
