The Hangleton Manor, Hangleton

After spending almost a million pounds on the refurbishment The Hangleton Manor sadly seems to have been made worse. No longer a traditional country pub with a good range of ale- now it is an unappealing restaurant with a bar. Ale range has been reduced (now only Badger Beers) and prices increased. On the plus side there is plenty of parking.

The Martha Gunn, Brighton

This place was my local for 12 months and sadly I have nothing good to say about it. The management were obnoxious and the ale poorly kept. If in the area I would recommend giving this one a miss and visiting The Bugle Inn which is round the corner.

The Swan Inn, Falmer

The Swan Inn has about 2,500 students living on its doorstep and still it closes in the afternoon. Although obviously not an astute businessman, the owner certainly knows how to maintain a traditional country pub. The ales are always of a great quality and the food is typical pub fare. The staff seem pleasant enough if a little slow at serving customers.

The Bath Arms, Brighton

In the last 12 months the Bath Arms has gone downhill fast. The ales are usually in a very poor state- if they have ale on at all. This is doubly disappointing since the pub boasts a Cask Marque plaque outside.

Sir Charles Napier, Brighton

This is a great little pub. There is a wide range of Gales (now owned by Fullers) and Fullers ales on. The staff and locals are always friendly which can be a novelty in Brighton. There is a small beer garden but this fills up quickly in the sun so you may have to resort to the comfortable old leather armchairs inside. The sunday lunch is top-notch and reasonably priced.

The Packhorse, Woodhouse

Great cask ale and fine pub grub- you can't beat a 'Packhorse Mega Burger' for value-for-money! The atmosphere is very relaxed unless there's a group on the 'Otley Run' pub crawl in there- then it can get very rowdy!

Fans of traditional pubs will love this place. The Packhorse has kept all of its internal walls intact so has preserved the 3 small individual rooms downstairs, in contrast to cold open-plan lager halls. The smallest room contains the jukebox and is very cosy during freezing winter nights!

Palace, Leeds

The best pub in Leeds by a mile!

The staff are extremely friendly and only too happy to change the barrel if it runs out while pulling your pint. Ale drinkers will appreciate that this pub usually has at least 5 cask beers on, with Ind Coope Burton Ale on as standard. The food is top-notch and so too is the atmosphere!

The Evening Star, Brighton

The Dark Star beers are superb, served to a high standard and are beyond reproach.
My only criticism, as others have pointed out, is the atmosphere inside this insipid pub. The smokiness of the pub aside, it can be a real challenge to physically get up to the bar. You regularly have to force yourself past nonchalant locals sitting at the bar in order to collect your pints. Sometimes you can find yourself frustratingly waiting to be served, as it appears that bar-staff prioritise locals over new custom. If this happens to you then I recommend walking down the hill to the Lord Nelson.
