Standard, albeit very big, sports pub. Unexpected Welsh influence (Brains beer on tap) the main interest.tI

Large drinking hall next to West Kensington tube station. Had a few ales on, tried the Brains SA which wasn't up to a lot as it's more a lager circuit style haunt. Most comments seem to concentrate on the service and the television sports - rather apt as the ale does seem to take second place.

Having visited this pub a couple of times over the last few years to watch various sporting events I thought it might be somewhere good to watch the rugby. A few of us went on Saturday to watch the opening games of the 6-nations and were thouroughly disappointed.

The pub was busy, as expected, but very dark and dingy with a lack of fresh air - standing room only with groups giving no consideration to other people around them. Queuing at the bar was taking 30 minutes with many disgruntled drinkers venting their frustrations so not a venue I would recommend to anyone for big sport games.

This is a pity as a few years ago I remember this place being quite good for such occasions.

Decent pub with a good atmosphere on sports days. The manager does seem to have a funny policy regarding the sport he shows on the TVs though. He wont change them over even if no ones watching.

For example earlier in the year went in during a lions game. The game was on in the big back room but this was packed way before the start. The front part of the bar was showing the end of the F1, a second division football game, some hockey and a fishing channel. Fair enough great to have the diversity but whn it became clear that absolutely no one was watching with the front section entrirely populated by one table of girls not interested in sport at all and a few tables patiently waiting for it to be seapped over to the rugby making regular trips to the bar asking when this was going to be. The manager refused time and time again but also refused to give an explanation why just a flat refusal. Then 20 minutes in he makes the switch. Nothing had changed in any of the games apart from the F1 which had finished 10 minutes prior to this and was showing the commentators chatting about it, with the sound down.

As I said strange decisions and I can understand you might of had passing trade coming in to watch the alternative sports but come on how many people were likely to come in and settle down to watch the fishing? In the end I saw at least a couple of dozen people either leave or walk in and go out because they couldn't get a good view of the game.

Still staff are friendly though on game day you will have to wait half an hour plus to get drinks. However if you get them in early the atmosphere makes up for it.

I went last night to watch some lower league footy (Tranmere v Stockport) with my Mrs. Not been in for a few years and remembered some great Champions League nights in here with the manager doing his verey own version of Jeff Sterling as the goals went in.not everyones cup of tee but I thought it was novel anyway!

Was a bit put off by some of these comments about the new management having poor customer service etc-but found nothing of the sort. Ok the who place has had a referb to resemble many a high chain bar-retro floral patterned wallpaper, stools that wouldn't look out of place in Dale Winston's parlor. But I found the service to be spot on. Quick service at the bar. We ordered food and they brought our drinks to our table.

The manager was more than happy to check the time of the footy and which screens it would be on. It was a Monday night so may be different at the weekend but all I would say is don't be put off by what you read on here. Certainly intend to make another visit.
