Still has the trappings of the old Tap & Spile Alehouse scheme from a few years back but now does pool and live music. However it does sell Butts and West Berkshire beers and cider. As they say - you set out your stall and see who comes to buy!! Not a place in general though - but probably not my scene on a noisy weekend.

This is place of and full of characters. I used to come here on my lunchtimes when I worked in the town (not vodascum). My trip to Newbury would not have been complete without popping in. It was around 10pm and I was met by a wall of noise - Metallica if not mistaken. There were around half a dozen biker types - including one that could have come from the gang in "Any Which Way but Loose" with Clint Eastwood. He demanded (nicely) that I put Voddoo Chile by Hendrix on. I did, and tried to educate their musical palates with a bit of Nick Cave and PJ Harvey as well. Friendly pub, great atmosphere. If its like this on a Monday, I would love to know what its like on a weekend.

Popped in for the first time in about a year yesterday. Obviously it's had some attention in that time - much brighter than it used to be and a pool table has appeared. But, unless my memory is at fault, there are less handpumps than on my last visit. Butts Traditional and one other ale (forgotten what!) plus Old Rosie on offer. Prices OK and service was fine.

During the day it's a rough-and-ready town boozer, in the evenings it has loud music. Butts Traditional ale usually OK.

Rough-round-the-edges boozer, but does stock Butts brewery beers (condition varies).

Landlord chatty, music loud. Wouldn't particularly want to pop in without company, but not a bad place.
