Ungentrified city-centrre boozer that doesn't particularly appeal with it's blue tiled exterior- rather redolent of an estate pub. However, do persevere as you will find one of the friendlier, more traditional pubs in town, with an excellent choice of beers. This pub isn't as well known as Nottingham's more tourist-trap pubs or trendy canalside outlets.
As noted the pub has two large rooms served by a central bar. Can't comment on The Saloon as only saw i briefly before going to play bar-billiards in the public bar. This large, bare-boards room has a pleasantly traditional and friendly feel. On a Saturday afternoon many were busy watching the football on the big screen, whilst we busied ourselves with the bar billiards- cheap at 50p a game.
Excellent range of beers including Castle Rock's age and guests- about 7 pumps in total. Harvest Pale went down a treat as ever-one of my favourites at the moment. Friendly service and a proper atmosphere. Along with the Vat and Fiddle this felt like one of the most 'proper' Nottingham pubs in terms of locals and ambience- I suggest you make it a priority if this is your thing.

A rare foray out of London for the King Rat saw him in Nottingham visiting one of the better pubs that this city has to offer. This pub had six or seven real ales on offer, including a couple of milds. I had a pint of Everard’s Tiger, which came with some white frothy stuff on top; luckily my companion was from somewhere up north and was able to tell me that it was something called a “head”. It was a jolly good pint nonetheless.

The pub itself retains its no doubt original two bar format. On the left you have the archetype Saloon Bar – carpeted and comfortable, with round tables accompanied by banquette seating. On the walls are framed front pages of the Nottingham Post showing historical events such as the abdication of Edward VIII and the famous one time Crystal Palace manager Trevor Francis scoring in the European Cup Final. I’m not sure of the purpose of the playing cards on the ceilings with peoples’ names on them. An ancient Midlands tradition perhaps? Also, the vertical blinds look somewhat incongruous (especially in the Public Bar) in a pub that appears to effect a 70’s appearance. The Public Bar on the other hand is bare-boarded and appears less comfortable. It obviously contains a dartboard, as well as a bar billiards table. On our way out through the public bar we spotted a bar skittles set, and my companion was disappointed that we did not have time for a game as he probably thought that the chances of a Southerner emerging victorious in a contest with someone from up north would be slim. Probably correct.

Behind the bar in the Saloon Bar was a slow burn cookpot, advertised as containing a spicy pork stew, and coming with a bread roll at £2.80 seemed a very good bet. We would probably have been tempted had we not been committed to a ruby later in the evening. There was also a chalkboard advertising more traditional fayre at reasonable prices. This is an excellent pub which I shall certainly return to next time I am in Nottingham.

If you like your pubs to be comfortable friendly and have good beer then the Newshouse fits the bill. Away from the City Centre but close enough to the railway station, trams and buses. I found the Newshouse to be a worthy CAMRA pub of the year winner. Can't wait to return.

great beer, though sometimes dodgy-esque local clientele not giving the warmest of welcomes.

Rather surprised that this place has become Nottingham's Camra Pub of the Year, though Camra do tend to judge pubs purely by the ale they sell and ignore any other considerations.

Although in the City centre it is just too far away from the shops etc to attract much passing trade and is therefore not very busy, at least not at lunchtime or in the early evening. It is normally just two old men in there staring into their pints and not the most welcoming atmosphere. Rather grim decor.

Beer is fine as you would expect, but I recommend the Fellows ( about 200m on the same road) for more pleasant surroundings
