Been here quite a few times in recent years. Now the beer selection has got even better and the prices are very reasonable. You can also get Craft beers here if that's your thing.

Still a Castle Rock pub but now run by tenants (instead of managers) so our "1overthe8" cards were not valid. However they do have their own loyalty card and offer a discount to card-carrying CAMRA members. Two bar pub with a fair selection of ales (not a huge choice but adeqaute) and friendly enough. Handy for railway station and tram stops. Plenty of reading material available while you sup your beer.

Contrary to Snarling_Mallard's comments I wasn't totally convinced with the place. The ale was flat as a pancake. The pub itself was interesting with a bar-billiards table in the vault. The only pub near me which has one is The Railway in Portwood, Stockport.

Don't think I'd return in all honesty.

Excellent old school alehouse handy for the tram terminus and station. Top place for old bastards like meself.

Great little boozer. Usual Castle Rock Fayre plus guests. One of only 2 bar billiards tables in Nottingham. the sort of place to wile away an afternoon.

Castle Rock pub. Usual range of ales. Decent pub.

If you are coming from the station or tram terminus then you have negotiate a very busy road to get to this pub - but perservere! Good boozer with Castle Rock ales and guests. Two bars. Football is shown in the public bar and note the brewery names on the tiling! Cobs and newspapers available. A good, straightforward beer house!

Cool pub, great pint of Preservation. Quiet when I went in.

Still one of the top 10 pubs in Nottingham. Usually a great beer selection including old favourites from Castle Rock. Yep, it's out of the way on a strange little road but that means it benefits from keeping out the lager guzzlers. Highly reccommended.

Slightly odd location for a pub, especially one aiming it's appeal to the more discerning drinker, the Newshouse stands awkwardly on a partly re-developed highway. Once inside there is at once a similarity to the nearby Vat & Fiddle in as much as it retains a non contemporary interior with a focus on traditional ales and relaxed atmosphere. For our visit there only appeared four working hand pumps on offer, and my first choice Old Big Head (in tribute to you-know-who) was not a success. There was also another beer, the name of which escaped me, that even though was advertised as a bitter had a peculiar cidery taste which we were assured was how it's meant to be. Eventually we were all settled on something we liked and the general impression was of a pleasant, rather than essential alehouse with not much to fault it. And being close to the station you could do a lot worse. Good service.

7.

We sailed into here last Saturday (although we have been here before). Nice ale selection and friendly staff. Baguettes were very nice! Pub was clean.

Please don't be put off by the photo on here making it look like a dubious estate pub: it is very far from that with excellent beer; welcoming staff and clientele.

A cracking little pub. Awesome selection of beer, great staff, very close to the bus station. The clientle are very welcoming too.

Consistent beer quality and varied choice, bar billiards, feels like a proper pub. Friendly enough.

Ungentrified city-centrre boozer that doesn't particularly appeal with it's blue tiled exterior- rather redolent of an estate pub. However, do persevere as you will find one of the friendlier, more traditional pubs in town, with an excellent choice of beers. This pub isn't as well known as Nottingham's more tourist-trap pubs or trendy canalside outlets.
As noted the pub has two large rooms served by a central bar. Can't comment on The Saloon as only saw i briefly before going to play bar-billiards in the public bar. This large, bare-boards room has a pleasantly traditional and friendly feel. On a Saturday afternoon many were busy watching the football on the big screen, whilst we busied ourselves with the bar billiards- cheap at 50p a game.
Excellent range of beers including Castle Rock's age and guests- about 7 pumps in total. Harvest Pale went down a treat as ever-one of my favourites at the moment. Friendly service and a proper atmosphere. Along with the Vat and Fiddle this felt like one of the most 'proper' Nottingham pubs in terms of locals and ambience- I suggest you make it a priority if this is your thing.

A rare foray out of London for the King Rat saw him in Nottingham visiting one of the better pubs that this city has to offer. This pub had six or seven real ales on offer, including a couple of milds. I had a pint of Everards Tiger, which came with some white frothy stuff on top; luckily my companion was from somewhere up north and was able to tell me that it was something called a head. It was a jolly good pint nonetheless.

The pub itself retains its no doubt original two bar format. On the left you have the archetype Saloon Bar carpeted and comfortable, with round tables accompanied by banquette seating. On the walls are framed front pages of the Nottingham Post showing historical events such as the abdication of Edward VIII and the famous one time Crystal Palace manager Trevor Francis scoring in the European Cup Final. Im not sure of the purpose of the playing cards on the ceilings with peoples names on them. An ancient Midlands tradition perhaps? Also, the vertical blinds look somewhat incongruous (especially in the Public Bar) in a pub that appears to effect a 70s appearance. The Public Bar on the other hand is bare-boarded and appears less comfortable. It obviously contains a dartboard, as well as a bar billiards table. On our way out through the public bar we spotted a bar skittles set, and my companion was disappointed that we did not have time for a game as he probably thought that the chances of a Southerner emerging victorious in a contest with someone from up north would be slim. Probably correct.

Behind the bar in the Saloon Bar was a slow burn cookpot, advertised as containing a spicy pork stew, and coming with a bread roll at 2.80 seemed a very good bet. We would probably have been tempted had we not been committed to a ruby later in the evening. There was also a chalkboard advertising more traditional fayre at reasonable prices. This is an excellent pub which I shall certainly return to next time I am in Nottingham.

If you like your pubs to be comfortable friendly and have good beer then the Newshouse fits the bill. Away from the City Centre but close enough to the railway station, trams and buses. I found the Newshouse to be a worthy CAMRA pub of the year winner. Can't wait to return.

great beer, though sometimes dodgy-esque local clientele not giving the warmest of welcomes.

Rather surprised that this place has become Nottingham's Camra Pub of the Year, though Camra do tend to judge pubs purely by the ale they sell and ignore any other considerations.

Although in the City centre it is just too far away from the shops etc to attract much passing trade and is therefore not very busy, at least not at lunchtime or in the early evening. It is normally just two old men in there staring into their pints and not the most welcoming atmosphere. Rather grim decor.

Beer is fine as you would expect, but I recommend the Fellows ( about 200m on the same road) for more pleasant surroundings

Unpretentious, basic Castle Rock pub situated on Canal Street. It's in a slightly isolated position on the "wrong" side of the major road and opposite a large office development that is under construction. Despite a reasonably central position, I doubt it gets much passing trade and it seems to be very much a regulars pub.

There's 2 interconnecting bars - the public bar on the right has a bar billiards table and dart board. The pub is called the News House because, so the CAMRA GBG tells us, the news used to be read out to customers in the pub. There's accordingly much news memorabilia - framed newspaper pages of significant events adorn the walls ( eg - Princess Diana's funeral, first man on the moon, Forest winning the European Cup, Torvill and Dean winning gold at the Olympics.)

On the date of my recent visit, the pub was proudly displaying a banner denoting it as "Notts CAMRA Pub of the Year 2009 - 2010".

The usual Castle Rock beers are served. The Harvest Pale Ale - which seemed to be the preferred pint of the locals - was in typically citrussy and hoppy form. Everards Tiger and a beer called Silly Mid Whippet from the Cottage Brewery were on as guests.

The pub looks slightly uninspiring from the outside, but it's friendly and welcoming and a good bet for a nice quiet pint or two.

Visited this pub while doing a crawl of Nottingham in March. Building work going on opposite that wasn't pleasant while we were there. Nice pub though with a choice of beers. Had the latest Burton Bridge medal range Wonder Willy and Everards Tiger.

Good pub, with always pleanty of beers on.

A traditional style pub owned by Tynemill. The pint of Sheriffs Tipple I had was well kept but the beer wasn't really to my taste. It's always been fairly quiet when I've been in, even on a Saturday. This may be because it's a little bit out of the way. Worth finding.

Castle Rock Preservation & Harvest Pale, JW Lees Brewers Dark, Hopback GFB, Everards Tiger, Newby Wyke HMS Revenge, Isle of Skye Hebridean Gold, Moles Black Rat cider. As Td states, the exterior isnt overly impressive but inside has a solid traditional layout & feel, Im surprised to read that the current building dates back only to 1950s. From entrance turn right to traditionally furnished wood-floored public bar with big-screen and bar-billiards table, left to carpetted lounge with upholstered banquettes, central bar serving both. Cobs/rolls 2, eg haslet & cheese (Notts friends were surprised Id never heard of haslet) or 2 slices of gala pie for 1.50. Very likeable pub and landlady, who provided a friendly welcome.

Another great pub from the Tyne Mill chain. Does not look great from the outside but a proper traditional boozer inside. Nice range of Castle Rock and guests and I had an excellent pint of GFB. We had some good banter with the attractive landlady.

Only been here a couple of times, but was impressed.

From the outside this doesn't look promising but go inside and you'll find an excellent pub. It actually looks older inside than it actually is. There's a quiet bar on the left and a TV screen in the righthand bar. The Bateman's Salem Porter was delicious.

Super 2 roomed pub that was rescued from snaffdom by the Tynemills chain about 3 years ago.

They have a range of 4 or 5 well priced ales on offer and now it's got a tramstop nearby there's no excuse not to go there
