Went here a while ago and thought the ale (Palmers) was good. Had some food as well, and that was not bad either. The one thing I would say was that the reason for going there in the first place was to check it out for a subsequent visit with family, kids etc. On the first occasion (a Saturday), there was tons of choice on the menu - including lots of vegetarian options on a specials board (around 6 or 7 dishes, more than most pubs bother with). The second visit (a Sunday lunchtime) - no vegetarian food at all. None. Nada. Zip. Bupkiss. Now, some people might think "Well, it's a Sunday - they were probably doing roasts". Yes. But one of the meals on the menu for that first visit was (wait for it) a veggie roast, with all the trimmings. So they obviously can do it. To not have it on, on a Sunday, and have no other veggie options - that's just daft. All that said, the pub is a good one, really pgw - 16 Aug 2011 14:42
We now have skittled here for a whole season and found the place to be thoroughly welcoming, with the skittlers grub (massive platters of sandwiches) to be more than sufficient, although some of the lads have said they would like chips and pies/sausages or the like. A minor point however, as we have voted to go back for next year. Bar staff are always friendly and charming and mine hosts Kevin and Carolyn have done a great job particularly after the last incumbents (apparently; I was warned off by a former local) Beer is Palmers and has never failed, in fact it has Cask Marque accreditation so you can taste and try, before you buy. Haven't dined here yet but food always looks good. Can be heaving or quiet(ish) depending on... well who knows these days? Pub trade can be variable even on a Friday night (when we skittle) Driver67 - 4 Apr 2011 14:54
I seldom feel compelled to write reviews online but a visit to The Phelips Arms today has made we want to warn other visitors from going anywhere near this place. We visited the pub last week after a great visit to Montacute House. It looked OK - we didn't have high expectations for anything other than a decent lunch for four adults and three hungry children. I won't go into much detail about the food - other than to say it was terrible and clearly anything other than the "home-made" of the menu - but the experience was summed up by the *incredibly* grumpy owner/barmaid demanding 60p per pint of tap water when we had spent over £50 on food and drink. Under any circumstances that is incredibly tight but my warning is simple - DO NOT GO TO THE PHELIPS ARMS IN MONTACUTE!!! petercollie - 3 Jan 2011 14:04
i recently went in for lunch iin this pub, and the meal was very nice. at first i ordered 2 pints of coke. i nearly had a heart attack when the barlady asked for 6 pounds and ten p!!!!! for 2 pints of coke!!!!!! i thought she got mixed up with the prices of two pints of beer!!!! i am still shocked at how much they charged. is this the same for all brewery run pubs? i have never paid this much before. the most i have paid for a pint of coke is 2.20!!! lizzy100 - 25 Mar 2010 14:38
Ok ish village pub serving Palmers, allbeit in good condition. Tried a Guinness and wished I hadn't. Since when has it had cidery flavours? As a result lower marks than perhaps it merits, being the only pub open in this village now. brewguru - 2 Dec 2009 09:53
