| I went into this pub last night for the Sunday night Karaoke, I had a brilliant night and the Guinness was lovely , great staff (Thanks Sue the landlady) It was a little outta the way forom where I live , the toilets are a little too small (No urinals , just one pot) Other than that , I can highly reccomend this luverly little watering hole........ cossy52 - 17 May 2010 10:58 |
| I use this pub more than any other in the Shirley area, and have done so for the last 30 years. Minimal changes have taken place, and the beer is superb and reasonably priced. The food is also excellent and I often partake in a family meal on a Sunday, which is rather special. Only criticism is the bar with the coins in resin. I do think it's time for something new! | For a pub with a name like this, I was expecting to be served glorious ale for free by a philosopher who would say things like "Truth is a jewel in the case in the wreck at the bottom of the ocean, my friend, now would you like anything else with that London Pride my friend?" Sadly, surprises were not in abundance. However apt or otherwise its name might be, this is a decent hostlery and the London Pride was decent. Not as smart as its neighbour but still worthy of a visit. terenced - 31 Oct 2008 17:41 |
| Visited last night with 30 or so members of Croydon Male Voice Choir, who led the community singing after their concert nearby. The service was excellent given the vast influx of punters, and the GK IPA was drinkable but not at its freshest. The London Pride was by comparison lively and refreshing, and got the thumbs-up from the landlord of The Royal Standard who was visiting with the choir. A pleasant local with an intimate atmosphere. Worth a visit. Cheers, Alph_river - 9 Mar 2008 17:28 |
| I visited the Surprise last December. The name comes from a butterfly. Interesting décor - beams, pots, and there are coin set into the bar surface. The interior is looking rather shabby, though. The Greene King IPA had run out, but the pump clip was still displayed. john_the_jester - 25 Feb 2008 13:21 |
