Have'nt been in here, for a while since the last landlords destroyed the place....and what a transformation! The front bar has been refurbished and redecorated to a high and traditional standard and looks great. Was a bit dubious about the ale it being a Hall & Woodhouse, but tried a pint of Hoppin Hare and it was delicious, obviously well maintained and looked after. Talking to the friendly barmaid, I was told that they have live music & gigs upstairs, bands playing every Sunday in May, open mic nites & a quiz nite. The way she told me, was'nt from a marketing point of view but with enthusiasm & sincerity. I was told that a new Manager had been recently appointed and is orgainising such events, gigs etc. to put the place back on the map, which he clearly seems to be doing. I returned later that night to CB2 the late nite bar and it was buzzing, nice people, great atmosphere and a juke box! How rare are those these days! Anyway as I fought my way to the bar, I already found a drink waiting for me...initially puzzled I discovered that it was the Minty lookalike from le bats, and he remembered what I drank!! We had a brief chat and he told me he was the new manager and made me feel really welcome and like an old friend. The rest of the night unfortunately passed away to quickly with such a brilliant ambiance and music...but to be honest by 2 am I had my fill! I will definately be returning to this place due to the warm welcome, great staff and friendly regulars. This place now under the right direction & management is going places....watch this space!!

destroyed by the previous landlord....since the top of the bar was ripped out by these fools about a year ago it has died with none in there except a few cocaine hungry chavs. nice if you like your beer to taste like chip shop vinigar..

This used to be about the best pub around but unfortunately the new landlord pretty much destroyed it's atmosphere and all the reasons myself and eveyone I know loved going there overnight by ripping half the bar out, sticking a great big plasma screen in the middle of the room, stopping the gigs upstairs, and cramming a pool table in the bit where you used to be able to have a conversation. It used to be a 'real' pub with good beer and a really nice relaxed feel about it, great mix of people, some students, some old hippies, local, beery and musicy people. In one fell swoop it's been turned into chav central and I actually feel uncomfortable in there because it's full of leary lagery types. It looks like it's being refurbed at present and we can but hope that it'll be tidied up and put back how it was, but I'm not hopeful given the demonstration so far and Hall and Woodhouses, give the new boy a chance despite the fact it's been ruined - attitude.
