I went there last night with my parents and some other good friends of ours, a young family.

They currently run a cheap Thai buffet on Wednesdays, which we wanted to try.

Unfortunately, there was a dispute as the establishment felt we'd taken more than our fair share of food and wanted to charge us much more than the admittedly very low price we'd expected to pay (I'm not sure of details here, my dad was the one that went in to pay). Most of us had taken two servings, some of us went back for a third. Apparently there was a limit of twice per person; they were accusing us of going four times each.

The beer was not very nice, and quite expensive (normal for Winchester). Much as I hate to encourage anyone to go there, I must say that it was quite nice food; certainly more than reasonable for the price (even if the price had been for a single portion rather than <=2 it would still be pretty decent). From past experience of similar arrangements elsewhere, we sincerely didn't believe our behaviour to be at all unusual, and we received no indication that it was not allowed. For example their neighbours, The Willow Tree, who are the epitome of 'gastro-pub', also used to do a curry buffet for £5 per head, where you could eat as much as you liked.

Normally a dispute like this could be resolved in a civilised way, but the landlord was extremely confrontational, aggressive and insulting to us. He absolutely would not consider for a single moment that we may have had honourable intentions and that it was a simple misunderstanding. Instead he proceeded to repeatedly accuse us of being 'scum', robbers, etc, shouting right in our faces in front of the kids. I can assure you it is extremely rare to see any of us as angry as we were last night, but when someone totally refuses to listen to your side of the story, it is not acceptable and very difficult to remain tolerant. I've never seen someone shouting 'scum' at my dad from across the street as he walked away before, and I expect that I never will again.

We assumed that if they were running something like this cheaply, it was because they were trying to invest in attracting new customers, if anything.

After our treatment, apparently not.

I suppose one lesson learnt for us is to take a little more care to clarify these things before making assumptions. The more important lesson is to never go near that nasty bloke... I really wouldn't be surprised to be attacked by him if I bumped into him on my own at night. I'm pleased to hear that he's not this obnoxious to all of his customers. Perhaps he was upset as they were recently apparently busted for serving under-age kids.

The Ship Inn is great, it has really changed. I rememeber going there while I was at college, but it went down hill for a while. I have returned to the city and had a wicked day in garden with pals. The staff were friendly and there was a great atmosphere and the Thai food was fab.
WIll be back next time im in town...

Dont knock it !!! -
It has a been long time since anyone posted a reveiw.. (years!)
The old landlady was chucked out, the pub has been closed recently for a massive new (very expensive) refurb.
Is going to be relaunched with a new owner, and is promising to bring back the Sports, the LIVE music and entertainment, and also too refurb the much neglected garden which backs onto the river that we all used to love so much.
Food too !! -sounds like a good invester that loves his customers is back in The Ship Inn again!!
Will post more afetr the refurb- but lets hope it regains all (and more) of its famous past as a great LIVE pub venue...
