| a world class pub for the real ale lover juninhocrunch - 20 Nov 2011 23:43 |
| Situated on a corner of Bexley Square, just off Chapel Street and just a short walk from Salford Central Railway Station this is gem of a boozer. I just can't understand why it's taken me so long to get here? Having won the CAMRA pub of the season award on numerous occasions it's easy to see why this pub is a cut above the rest. Consisting of two rooms, the décor is bright, modern, clean and comfortable and is obviously well maintained. The interior is typical of many, with an array of tables, chairs and wall seating. The front (and main bar) which is popular with locals was full on the afternoon of my visit, it also offers a large TV screen which is used for sporting events/horse racing & other times. The back room was darker than the front and apart from myself & one other was empty. That said, it was a beautiful Saturday afternoon so most were outside enjoying the sunshine on the additional seating situated at the front & side of the pub Considering the size of the place, the range of real ales on tap is frankly amazing. Constantly changing there are too many to mention here, but take my word for it, you will find something that suits your taste. Luckily the pub has it's own web site and updates the ale list on a daily basis, so you can find the latest information here: http://www.thenewoxford.com/beers.php They also hold a huge range of bottled German & Belgium beers All the beers I sampled were spot on, I also found the bar staff to be very knowledgeable and helpful, with a full glass every time, which is all I ever ask. The clientèle base sees to be a pretty mixed bunch (Sat afternoon), from couples, groups of lads to individual (friendly) locals. It's weird, but this pub has a "safe" aura about it? Which probably says a lot about the management and how it's run. The other good thing, I didn't see any children? No, I'm not anti kids, but lets be honest, they can be irritating when you just come out for solace and a quiet pint. Toilets? This pub is busy, yet despite that the toilets where a credit. Clean, fresh smelling, locks that worked, no graffiti...'nuff said. In summary, I wish I'd found this pub many years earlier. To the beer drinker, this is a mini beer festival every day. It's clean, bright, tidy & welcoming...for a general boozer they don't get much better than this. Well worth a visit. Recommended! | Was this here 20 years ago? If it was it must have been different. I went into Manchester with my Mum the other day and she pointed this place out to me so we called in for a quick one. What a gem! several ales I didn't know plus aome I do. No problem having tasters, and the only beer available amongst the plethora of keg's that most people would know was Guinness. Unfortunately I don't come home as often as I should, but I will be using this place in future. Good friendly, knowledgable barstaff too! tmitch - 8 Jul 2011 12:42 |
| The best pub in Salford. It's part of a nice little crawl down Chapel St. I just hope when they regenerate they add a few more decent boozers and not all wine bars and clubs gunninm - 28 Feb 2011 11:50 |
| Light, airy and modern pub situated on a renovated square. This place had a very good selection of real ales and ciders and is ideally situated to combine with the Crescent just down the road. On my Sunday evening visit they had Empire Snow Joke, Salamander Transporter, Northumberland Firkin Freezing & Legends of the Tyne Craig Bellamy, Fugelstou Just Jane, Bazens Light Relief, Lymestone Ein Stein, Great Heck Auld Lang Syne & Leeds New Moon. Ciders were Thatchers Heritage & Cheddar Valley and Gwynt y Ddraig Haymaker. I'm sure I'll be back here at some time. blue_scrumpy - 21 Jan 2011 22:18 |
