Even though the landlord is a kiwi and therefore will talk boll*x about rugby (NZ + Fiji + Samoa + any disenfranchised Pacific island = All Blacks) the pub is actually great and deserves greater attendance by all who live around the hill. The beer is good the food is tasty and the refurb is an improvement.

visited today. Decent pint of Pride and some good guest ales. Seemed very quiet - must be all those pretentious w*nkers going to the Castle to drink the Bazelgette Pride and competing to see who can laugh the loudest over unfunny jokes....

This is not just bangers and mash it’s the finest Toulouse sausage infused with fresh herbs and spices, marinated over a charcoal fire in a jus of cranberry and wild boar stock with the finest duchess potatoes slowly prepared with chive and crème fresh. All saturated in a traditional chateau neuf bouillon.
No it aint mate – its sausage and splodge at £9 a pop!

Excellent refurbishment. Comfortable and welcoming without going too "Gastropub." Fullers beers are well kept while the Staropramen and Hoergarden will make a nice alternative on a summer's day. Even the wine list shows some imagination. Most impressive of all is the food. Nothing too poncey, just good, fresh ingredients cooked well. The steak sandwich was particularly impressive and the home made chips were superb. I'm sure there'll be a few comments on here from locals bemoaning the chages made to "their pub" - see the comments for The Castle up the road for evidence of this - but this is a textbook lesson on how to update a pub without destroying it's character. Well done.

Yes, they have done a lot in a short space of time. Pleasant atmosphere and we appreciate the range of wines and beers on offer. Look forward to trying their menu.
