Can't complain about the beer and it's a well disciplined pub with decent clientele. Have to say the comments about closing early is one of the most grevious things a pub can do in my humble opinion. People are entilted to drink and be served until the time stated or the time that the pub usually closes. We're not talking legal stuff here, I know the pub can close anytime they decide. I mean the moral and ehtical issue of taking peoples money then closing befroe you expect them to, we not talking about late drinks or lock ins, just the normal time that they close, or should close each night.

Great pub, great beers.

Amen to Spetswalshe's and Tierney's comments. I would add that the Fountain can often have the air of a private member's club rather than a pub, and that the landlord's photographs of the first Gulf War might not be to everyone's taste, even if the beer is.

agree, great log fire in the winter and a nice pub if you don't mind the hunting trophies on the walls. bar staff are usually relatively friendly, however management are not; comments about calling time early and shutting on a whim are both true, and it's one of the most expensive pubs for lager in ely. don't expect cider on tap, either, but a decent selection of ales if that's how you get down.

I should add to yesterday's comment that 'shutting' time early involves calling time early (with no warning) and closing on the dot at 11.00 - and in pratice turfing people out earlier. No respect shown to the customer, or the late visitor, at all. It's a shame in a pub that won a Camra award a few years ago.
