Looked forward to visiting this pub on my visit - but what a disappointment. Doom bar is better in my local 250 miles away, service both beer and food was disinterested at best and food was worst of the 3 pubs there. The pub is quite honestly skanky inside - which is fine if you are local and like it that way but visitors (and this is not a cheap destination to stay/drink or eat locally) expect a bit more and get it in many other tourist locations. this pub needs to spend some of its profits on the pub.

Having visited the Ship Inn on many occasions a few years back, we couldn't wait to go back and sample it again. Oh how we wish we hadn't though. It was nice to see when we got there that the pub hadn't changed, neither the menu. The bar itself is great, traditionally Cornish and cosy. However do get there in good light as if you're eating in certain areas you've got little chance of seeing it when it gets darker!
The food itself was ok, but not as good as it used to be. The salad that we got was absolutely drenched in dressing, which in turn made everything else, including the bread, soggy. Not nice. The fishcakes were tasty, but the filling seemed to be liquidised to within an inch of it's life so no fishy chunks, despite this though, still had bones in!
When we got there we were served at the bar by a friendly face. Unfortunately where we were sat, we had a view of the kitchen, and the umpteen young people working/hanging around there, shouting and singing. When fifteen minutes had passed after we'd finished eating and the plates were still on the table (no-one was doing any work at this point) we decided to pay and leave. Easier said than done though, as the person behind the bar was too busy playing cards to even look at us.
It's a shame the visit was like this, as it used to be far better. Would never go back now, unfortunately.

Well, we must have got misled by the previous reviews as we made a beeline for this pub on arrival in Porthleven after walking the coast path. The welcome was OK and the landlord helpful in pointing us in the direction of where we could eat (they'd stopped serving lunch), but the place came across as rather dated and in dire need of modernisation, particularly the WCs. The one redeeming feature was the beer – the Doom was superb and the Orchard cider just fine.

Not quite what it used to be as they only had Doom Bar and Courage Best but the food was still good when visiting lasdt week. Its worth going just to sit and have a pint in the fantastic surroundings though.

An absolute classic. If only all seaside pubs were like this! Stunning location with a great real pub atmosphere. Obviously heavy on the food, especially in the summer months, but that never detracts from this being first and foremost a pub.
