I have to say I'm biased about this place as I DJ there (fortnightly on Fridays - next gig is 16th May 08) - I'm the "lovely old gel" someone else has mentioned in a recent review! Yes, it has its moments and can get very crowded but has a good atmosphere and the people are very appreciative of the music I play (60s beat/pop/psych/Northern Soul/Motown/ska/70s punk). Sure beats some of the more pretentious Camden watering holes. sueg - 12 May 2008 10:26
Great pub, my joint-favourite in Camden (the Dublin Castle is the other, in case you're interested) No trouble from locals, in fact one even offered to help out if the bloke chatting up my daughter didn't leave her alone. usualdog - 21 Apr 2008 17:22
what a cracking pub! Me and some friends went here before a gig at the roundhouse and this place was buzzing. The staff are fit and friendly...well the girls are-the beer is cold and good-the dj is lovley old gel who plays all the right stuff-fantastic f**cking pub! The only problem is that it can get a bit crowded! Will be back there for a pint and a flirt soon robbie79 - 10 Mar 2008 21:32
Don't get me wrong. There are a LOT of good things about this pub. The character of the bar itself, the open fires, the whole energy of the place is dead on. The DJs have their sh1t covered as well, and all told you could while away a very cheery evening in here. Except for the people that drink here. I don't know if I was missing something, or if there exists some special code of practice for people who drink in Camden, but the whole atmosphere of this place was wrecked by constant, relentless spilling of pints. My mates like a lively pub as much as the next man, but when the next man empties his pint down your girlfriend's front then tells her she's 'in the f***ing way', then another of your mates is flattened by a group of four brawling men who are being bundled out the door, you start to feel a little less like staying. The real crowning moment on the night we were there was the guy who fell into our table - and I mean actually sprawled out across the table top - knocking pints and glasses of wine into our laps, then again told us barefacedly that he 'didn't give a s**t'. By this point the place had gone beyond a joke. That'd be one thing if it weren't for the fact that the staff couldn't be less arsed about what's going on. Of the fight, the security guard told us 'what, I'm getting rid of them, aren't I?'. The bar staff asked what we wanted them to do about it then wen't back to talking about the difficulties of back-combing hair and how terrible it was to be constantly mistaken for Noel Fielding. We had to ask the guy that smashed into our table to leave ourselves, which he duly did only because one of the lads we were with looked a bit scary. But you don't want to be the w**kers making a fuss, and you don't want to drink in a place that's going to wind you up so much you have to be. It's such a shame this place can't make more of all the good things it's got going for it, and it's all because of the spineless people working there that let arsey customers walk all over the joint. I really, really wouldn't recommend anyone visit this pub. I'd leave them to tear the place to pieces themselves if I were you. JDW - 9 Mar 2008 14:53
I quite liked this pub, you get a good mix of people and there seems to be a high proportion of locals, considering its location. Fortunately, I had no trouble with the locals when I went there. My only complaint would be the bar staff, they were totally useless! And the toilets were pretty iffy. cookiemonster11 - 4 Feb 2008 11:53
