With The Ship "gone" and the Butt aiming at the dog trade the George inherits the mantle of being the iconic village pub. But with yet more new leaseholders in there now do they want the challenge?
Hall & Woodhouse is a matter of taste - but they should not sell very stale beer and short measures.

New landlords arrived at this pub in October 2009, and have been breathing new life into this lovely 16th century building, with traditional flagstone flooring and good views over the main square. Definitely worth a diversion from the A303. We stayed here overnight and the room was quite reasonable - the bed itself was very comfortable.

Had a pint of H & W Hopping Hare and a coffee for herself. £4-80!
Beer was fine, and coffee was pronounced very good.
Didn't stop to eat, as I can get ripped off more than ten quid for fish and chips at lots of places, and don't need it here.

A typical small town pub. Lovely looking and there is a good selection of ale but no atmosphere. I have seen more life in a morgue. There is also nothing to do. Tried playing one of the games left on a table but with some of the pieces were missing, it was fruitless. Left after one beer.

Stopped in for a break getting away from a traffic jam on the A303.
This pub looked like the best in the centre.
Very friendly welcome, with nothing too much trouble.
As I was driving, I did not sample the beers, but most of the locals were drinking lager. A dish of "Catch of the Day" (Plaice) was well cooked and presented.
I will try to visit when I am not driving.
