Called into The Sportsman last night for a pint. Tried the Pennine Brewery Rossendale Ale and Hambleton Bitter along with Thwaites Wainwright. All were superb and in great condition. This is one of the two best pubs in Hyde, the other being The Cheshire Ring. DoctorBarfly - 29 Dec 2011 21:36
Traditional pub, stocking ales by the Pennine brewery, two of which were drank. The Porter was spot on, the Pale Ale acceptable, at fairish prices. Although the interior is old fashioned and quite interesting (check out the beer posters), the atmosphere was a bit flat, wrong time of day perhaps? nokegthanks - 12 May 2011 19:22
I really like this pub which serves belting beer and has a gorgeous smelling restaurant upstairs. Things to go for Pitch Porter (House beer) dark and lovely Black Cat Mild made by Moorhouses Or even better a pint of both mixed together as 'Pitch Black' andybleaden - 25 Mar 2011 21:15
I love this pub, its wacky characters, excitable cuban staff, there's always something going on, the beers are usually fine-try the recent new beer, HALO, named after the modern illuminated monument high above the brewery in Haslingden. If you can catch Geoff the landlord, introduce yourself as he is something of a character himself. glossopowl - 21 Dec 2010 21:08
I was only in this pub briefly but its clearly a top-notch place. loads of hand pumps and a great range of ales. i tried the 'railway sleeper' which was excellent and under 2 quid! wetherspoons prices. very helpful bar staff, everything you could want in a pub i reckon. wilson_the_dude - 10 Nov 2009 12:14
