Standard Wetherspoons(good, cheap beer & uninspiring decor) with unusually friendly service.

Popped in here before the Newcastle v Portsmouth match in Decemberlast year. As blue_scrumpy says, had to wait at least an hour for food and breakfasts were very popular. Sadly, I ordered burger and chips instead and it was the worst I've ever had in a Wetherspoons. Bitter was also poorly kept.

Went to the Froddington Arms across the road last season and was made to feel welcome, beer was excellent and had a far better time!

Typical Wetherspoons with open-plan layout. Before yesterday's match it was fairly busy. Many people were eating the breakfasts. Although the waiting time was in excess of 1 hour, meaning some (including us) were left to go hungry. Given the size and location (near Fratton station and the football ground), I would have thought they would have been able to turn orders around quicker. Instead they are probably losing out on quite a bit of business. There's the usual range of Wetherspoons real ales, plus they had Westons Organic cider on draught during our visit.

Feels like most Spoons, you get what you expect. As quiet as a library!

The beer is generally not kept terribly well. The food is about average for a Spoons.

This pub also attracts most of the weirdos and dysfunctional types from a wide area around it. Some of them work behind the bar.

The truth is, Fratton isn't a particularly great place for a beer however you look at it apart from the Connaught or the Florist. The Froddington over the road isn't renowned for its ale these days but it is at least a proper pub and not a converted furniture shop.
