First visit here c/o friends who live locally. They said it was good and we were not disappointed. Good choice of ales with a very helpful what's on blackboard which included a colour description of the ales like dark, ruby, light etc, which with all the funny names for beers these days is most usefull. Excellent place.

Like Hoppy Al I also spent a very pleasant two hours in here on my first visit. Excellent range of about 9 ales, a mixture of local brewed, Plain Ales, Ramsbury and Hop Back, and some not so local, Dark Star, Sharps. Friendly and welcoming its a must if you're in the area. Will definitely be back.

A fantastic pub, 9 real ales, soon to be boosted to 10, 2 regulars & 7 guests from a diverse number of breweries and in excellent condition. I paid 22 for a 3 course meal, worth it in my humble opinion, most food is sourced locally, it's a bit 'nouvelle cuisine' if you want to be filled up buy some pie & chips from the chippy down the road, otherwise enjoy the wonderful flavours of the food. GrahamH's comments down below regarding the lunch time meals have been forwarded to the local CAMRA branch who did their survey on 5th February 2011 for the GBG 2012 guide and the entry should be amended.

With a choice of nine decent beers on handpump, the Red Lion is real ale heaven. The 'tipple board' of three third-of-a-pint glasses is a great way to sample the line-up, and the traditional, low-ceilinged main bar is a lively social hub.

We stayed here three nights and were very impressed by the accommodation in a simply furnished but spacious room with an excellent bathroom. Breakfast was good, but the service was painfully slow. Similarly, the evening meal service in the restaurant was conducted at a snail's pace and the food - although thoughtfully prepared with local ingredients - was not especially good value for money, with lilliput-sized starters and mean portions of vegetables.

I rate this pub very highly. Called in by chance as we were driving down the M4 and needed a convenient stop off for lunch. Excellent range of beer, excellent attitude by the barman, great food (NB the 2011 GBG omits the symbol showing lunchtime food, which IS served). A small pub but very cosy and welcoming.

Chavvy? What does that mean? The 'pot is anything but "chavvy", it's a proper real ale pub, which is probably why it was quiet when the previous comment was made. It's a harsh reality that real ale drinkers are not particularly good business.
The Cricks tends to be busier than the Gluepot on a Sunday, but, in my experience, not for the rest of the week.

Visited this place on a Sunday night and it was empty yet chavvy The Cricketers across the square was heaving!! Very strange, as they serve decent beer and cider in the Gluepot. I see some people are moaning about the prices but three quid pints are becoming the norm these days, I know its not nice on the wallet but it could be worse, look at London. Its nearer 4 up there..... Hmmm. Unfortunately, after re-reading what I've just typed it looks like I've become resigned to the 3 pound pint.... Bloody hell, they've won.

I agree with you SW6, prices far too high now here, I now visit very infrequently, pub often empty at times you would think it would be full. 2.90 for the cheapest beer, I'll stick to the Sir Daniel now an d pay 1.96 thanks. Shame,.

Interesting pub, obviously an old coaching inn judging from all the separate rooms around a central passageway, fine pint of Otter ale, but a bit rough not somewhere to bring your Mum.

This pub welcomes bereaved relatives and supports repatriations. The whole country is proud of the way you and your village show support on our behalf...THANK YOU!
Everyone who appreciates their local, appreciates how important your role is.
I wish I could score you an 11!

This place has nurtured a reputation for catering sympathetically to Wootton Bassett's tragic new visitors - the friends and relatives of our fallen military.

However, as a pub, it has it's own tragedy. The beer quality is pretty dreadful, The toilets are often dirty and unmaintained. Bar service is slow and often only grudgingly offered and the locals including staff, have a habit of ignoring aspects of the smoking ban. ,

Sad. A formerly decent pub sliding steadilly downhill.

Cracking pub, shame about the miserable unfriendly ginger headed barmaid at lunchtime today, I don't mind paying 3.40 a pint for a 4.2% abv guest beer but when I put the empty glass back on the bar and say goodbye I do expect you to stop talking to your boyfriend and return the complement.

fantastic traditional pub with top selection of beers, well served, friendly host and staff and good company.
Not my local but make sure to pay a visit whenever I am in the area.
We need more REAL pubs like this, Well done Landlord

It's a good pub, but for f**ks sake how expensive?????
Pint of Hurricane, pint of Trip, pint of Strongbow......10.40.
3.70 & 3.50 for the bitters!!!! No wonder it's not as busy as it used to be!!

For interior comfort and atmosphere this is the best of the three 'Spoons in Swindon.

Over Christmas it was packed and the bar service was less than spectacular.

In the upstairs bar, the ales I tried were not quite on form and the Guinness was absolutely dire.

Hopefully standards will return to normal after the Christmas / New Year frenzy.

And they seem to have found the 'on' switch for the heating too.

Visited again yesterday afternoon as I had forgotton that the Gluepot doesnt open until 1630 on Mondays, had 4 pints of Double Expresso stout for 1.69 a pint in the beer fest, served in excellant condition. Bar service quick, friendly and efficient by Spoons standards, although admittantly it was a quiet time of day. Clean and comfortable definately gone up in my estimation, the Groves and the Savoy remain the same, conplete toilets.
