Over the past 5 years I’ve spent quite a few Friday afternoons in the Dove and I have always left in a better mood than I was when I walked in. I think that the staff have improved since my first ever visit and the drink is still of a good standard.

As afternoon turns into evening it can get a little hair raising negotiating all of the stairs to the back off the pub and avoiding the bustling waitresses with plates of food, but it keeps you on your toes.

This is definitely the best pub that I have been into on the North bank of the Thames between Hammersmith and Kew Bridge.

this place has been a favourite of mine for a few years now tho I don't get to go there nearly often enough. Until recently the food has been nothing better than average. However yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed a meal of stuffed figs followed by salmon. Both were cooked to perfection and it is obvious that food is becoming more of a focus. The Beer also was fresh and well served by friendly staff. I'll definetly return, Well done.

Unchanged since my last visit a year or so ago. It oozes history from every nook and cranny of its dark wooden interior. It has what is claimed to be the smallest bar anywhere on the right as you go in the pub – but I have never been in it as there have always been a couple of drinkers already in there, and three would definitely be a crowd! Excellent views of the river from the terrace, and superb Fullers ales make this a “must visit” pub on any visit to the area. Nonetheless, for some reason on which I cannot put my finger, I find this pub a bit pretentious. The food’s not cheap, but it does not pretend to be a backstreet boozer – so you “pays yer money and takes yer choice”! But on the whole I really do like this pub, and would recommend it.

Has this place had a change of management, from what i hear its on its last legs???
27 Mar 2008 18:26
Not to sure what all the fuss is about folks? I was in 'the hope' the other night and had a blast of a time with my other half. The tall bar man was lovely and helpful and so was Denise 'the gov'ner'. Much more fun than the bars in Earls Court and with-out the attitude. Great job - keep it up. XXX

I totally agree with robbieboy' comments to lezbot, I quite often drink in the hope and find both Denise & Marta to be excellent hosts, before it became a gay pub there was nothing going on there except pool night on a monday!!!! now there's lots going on, the pub has a lovely atmosphere and everyones friendly, I am made more than welcome there and I am not gay, I applaud Denise and Marta for all their doing for their customers , they have worked very hard to make the pub how it is today.

Before I stepped foot into this place I had visions of a dark and dank beer pit, but I was pleasantly surprised. A skylight illuminates the pub and the doors in the conservatory leading to the ample patio garden let the pub aerate. The adding of the conservatory also makes the pub much larger than one would assume from the front of the building.

The drinks on offer were ESB, Pride, HSB, Discovery and standard lagers. I’ve read the raving reviews of this pub in the past so I decided to ditch the usual Lager tipple and plumped for a Discovery, which was very nice.

The staff were friendly and with the Sky TV I could imagine sitting in here a lot more if it was local to me.

Good pub, I have had many a pleasant afternoon here, good beer and a change from the usual garbage round here
28 May 2008 17:12
Ah, the old weatherspoon argument. I am an advocate of the Salutation and firmly believe the quality of product is reflected in the price. Maybe Phillipher should ask to see the dates on the barrels in the cellar of the plough and harrow and compare to the Salutation. Weatherspoons are notorious for short dated beer which is reflected in the quality and the price.

The refurb took me by suprise. Been quite a while since last had a pint there. Bit more space & the atmosphere still remains the same. To be honest, they could have replaced the place with a portacabin & it still wouldn't have much effect - the view makes up for any inconsistencies with the refurb...

Location to die for on the north bank of the river (therefore a real sun trap). Unpretentious menu. One of the best places in London for a simple lunchtime bite Monday thru Friday, weather permitting. Can be too popular on summer weekends. A bottle (or glass) of white wine from their imaginative list and a pint of shell-on prawns, with brown bread and butter, will hit the spot. Eat either outside or in the room upstairs, both overlooking the river. Only 5 mins walk from Hammersmith tube.
1 Jun 2008 11:55
Just awesome really. Riverside location with some of the best views in London. Drank outside until the sun went in and then sat in their upstairs bar with panoramic views of the river. I think the pub has been done up great (never realised it was so historic!). Good selection of food on the menu and given the quality of the food and location of the pub we all thought it was awesome value. Looking forward to returning this weekend.

Reviews by BITE users:

If you like a traditional pub this is it! My absolute favourite pub ever! Very friendly staff, very reasonable prices for the area, just friendly enough regulars, child friendly, quiz nights, QPR bar man, board games: everything you always hoped a pub would be! Highly recommended!
8 Jul 2008 15:49
This place is nicely tucked away between the A4 and King Street giving it a nice relaxed feel away from all the hustle and bustle. The usual lager suspects are present along with 4 London Pride pumps. I usually drink lager, but opted for the Pride as I thought that it must be good if that is all the pub sells. Very nice.

The barman was very friendly and polite and the locals seemed harmless, maybe even friendly.

The pub is not that big, but it is fit for purpose and there is covered and uncovered seating in a reasonably sized beer garden which is to the rear of the pub.

With the music at a very nice volume and the dart board tucked around the side of the bar I felt a little aggrieved that this pub wasn’t nearer to my work.
4 Jun 2008 08:45
How a London pub should be in my humble opinion. Talkative characters around the bar, Chinese DVD sellers not thrown out onto the street, fabulous Fullers beer, wooden panelling throughout. Friendly cockney barman suggested I tried the sausage and mash. Happily I opted for crisps and another pint. Very Good Overall.

Still good and not really changed since the day they knocked down the division between the front and back bars and made it all one. As others have said one of the few decent pubs around here.

Reviews by BITE users:

Saturday was the first time I had been in here since 1999, so not surprisingly the name had changed and pub had been refurbished. It seemed a little disjointed with a gastro feel at the front of the pub and a pool table at the back.

It was pretty busy due to a show at the Apollo, but the lack of seating due to the oversized sofas taking up most of the floor space did make it looked packed. It took a while to get served each time I went to the bar due to till rolls running out, staff phoning cabs for punters and the locals blocking the bar.

I ended up on the Fosters as I thought that they only had this and Kronenburg, but I spotted a decent lager on the bar nearest to the entrance as I left (D’oh).

I think that if I was in the area again I would try to find another pub to drink in.
22 Apr 2008 09:15
Nearest pub to the Apollo. Three rooms knocked through with the bar in the middle room. Pool table in the back section. Sparse decoration. Plain wooden floor. Music played at a decent level. Friendly staff - the woman are quite buxom. Serves two meals for £8 up till 8pm. Bombardier and Courage Best are the casks.

very nice comfortable and tidy pub close to the apollo and a great tasting pint of l pride, 7/10

They seem to be caught between a old world feel and modern decor, it is pretty non descript and the beer is quite expensive.

They do have live music, which counts for a lot.

Well whoever said that the owner was up themselves was right! I was kicked out tonight for apparently not being 18 (even though I showed the guy ID which is real (i am 19)), basically I was talking to some guy and I disagreeed with him about the state of the war in Iraq and he was apparently the owner and told the bodyguard to chuck me out. Very stupid owner and I would not suggest this pub to anyone.
15 Dec 2007 04:51
What an unbelievable turnaround. This used to be the awfulest, dingiest pub in the area, and that's saying something. Now it's smart, inviting and well run with consistantly excellent real beer. Burgers very good too.

Reviews by BITE users:

I never really used to like this pub, I used to think it was overpriced and rather soul-less but I have now changed my mind. The pub is very child friendly with friendly staff, even though I would not recommend it for a quite pint on a hot summer's day as it does get very crowded.
8 Jul 2008 15:44
On my second visit to this Pub I was extremely disappointed, not only did the inside of the Pub smell like sewerage, but the staff were unfriendly and not 3 but 4 different glasses we obtained from the bar for our Cider was either covered in Lipstick or orange pulp from previous users drinks. I visited this pub in Mid 2007 and thoroughly injoyed the visit, however, after this visit I will not return to this Pub. We stayed for 1 drink and left, carrying our bottles with us, we didn't even finish them there. I would not recommend this Pub.
22 Jun 2008 22:24
This place is a massively inferior choice of riverside pub. Much much better is the Dove, about a 5 minute walk downriver. This place has been made to feel as sterile and un-publike as possible inside. A massively long bar with very average fare on tap, too. It's in a really nice old building. You get the feeling this place used to be better, and has been mauled and maimed by some seriously bad decisions. Given its location it could be a star.

Reviews by BITE users:

I'm a BIG fan of Wetherspoons, but this has to be my least favourite. It seems "soulless" and, in direct contrast to the previous comment, I always find it suprisingly dark and dreary inside - it feels as if some of the light bulbs are permanantly blown.

Sure it serves decent cheap real ales but that really doesn't redeem it. Please don't prejudge other Wetherspoons on the basis of this poor offering.
3 Jun 2008 23:58
Another big Spoons pub with 5 ales on tap and a wide selection of lagers, which is to be expected. Although this place is a little brighter than your average Spoons due to the large glass frontage and a side entrance with a long row of windows either side of it. There are dozens of tables and chairs stretching from the front of the pub all the way to the back where the toilets are located. There are also some couches at the very front of the pub by the large glass doors, but the view isn’t exactly enthralling.

This place is a little soulless and other than the cheap, nearly out of date, beer I don’t see any reason why anyone would drink here.
3 Jun 2008 17:20
It's alright, I suppose. I've seen better Spoons and worse Spoons, but a Spoons is a Spoons really. Generates feels of ambivalence.

No longer the OSP but properly the Old Suffolk Punch again, yes it's Greene King but still quite a good pub. Has the old OSP and previous Old Suffolk Punch layout where the old Golden Gloves's right hand bar is now the kitchen. Karaoke on a Friday night is a regular occurrence.
3 May 2008 01:35
They've done a good job with the refurb. Now looks nothing like the picture above and has been renamed the Old Soffolk Punch. Saw a couple of small boxing pictures on the wall no doubt due to the Mancini familys connections with this place from a few years back when it was the Golden Gloves. Beer standard Greene King fare with the usuals but don't let that put you off! Decent service even though it was Arsenal against Man United and it was bloody busy, all in all definately an improvement on what it was and well worth a look.

Reviews by BITE users:

I was excited by the idea of another gastropub in the area. However, a Sunday evening visit left me extremely disappointed.

The service was poor and the starter came at the same time as the mains. In addition, my roast salmon was completely inedible - moderately warm and the texture of wet cardboard. The puy lentil salad that came with it was lovely, but after paying £14 for the main, I was completely dissatisfied.

My advice: if you want a great gastropub in the area try The Grove or The Anglesea. Both are consistently top notch.
15 May 2008 22:25
Have visited a few times for an evening drink, but decided to try it for Sunday lunch. Surprisingly quiet, so no problem getting a table. Service was good (although it was quiet) and the food was excellent, if at the usual inflated gastro pub prices.

The decor of a lap dancing club and the clientele of a Wetherspoons - what could be wrong with that.

Desperately bad even compared to some of the other dumps around Hammersmith

Lookin a bit rough round the edges on visit last week, but still a decent location 4 pre-appolo drinx, 6/10

Reviews by BITE users:

Extremely dissappointed. After the refurb, we had started to use this as an after work local. Had a few leaving do's there however, just recently, after a two week period, after phoning 3 times, visiting and talking to staff twice, finally got confirmation we could use an area. Emailed and advertised to friends and collegues only to be called Thursday morning to say we could no longer have the are requeseted. Absolutley disgusted in their customer service, especieally when they admitted they didnt care about losing the business of 50 people for an evening.
10 Apr 2008 11:46
After reading older reviews of this pub I can't believe it was the same place I visited this afternoon!

Had wonderful food (2 sandwiches, priced around £4 each with chips for £2-ish) and a few pints of guinness (£2.90 each). The atmosphere was welcoming, the staff friendly and the sofa we sat on was wonderfully soft - we didn't want to leave! The toilets were also better than many other London pubs that I've visited.

Don't live in Hammersmith but if I was ever going past I would go back without a moment's thought - much more inviting than the Wetherspoons across the road.

Giving this 9/10 to hopefully increase the average rating somewhat to reflect that this pub is much better than its previous incarnation!
9 Mar 2008 22:53
Have never wanted to go inside before, but interested in the recent reports suggesting dramatic changes. Certainly looked good inside, but some of the punters still seemed a bit dubious. Only one real ale on - Timothy Taylor Landlord - and they tried to charge £2.65 despite the rather irritating digital adverising displays around the bar clearly quoting £2.45. They claimed that "the price has gone up today", but their bluff was well and truly called when I asked to look at the official price list on the wall. Ho hum! All in all, a mixed bag, but certainly now worth more than the current rating.

I'm going to add a comment to my previous remark because, to be fair the pub have taken the time and effort to address the matter.

1) I understand the pub quiz machine is back in working order and that a gesture has been made to me to compensate me for lost winnings. I am grateful for this, but as the amount I have lost can't be proven either way and the issue wasn't really money anyway I would like it donated to charity.

2) Food - the pub have defended ingredients, quality etc and I am prepared to accept them at their word that perhaps this was an unfortunate "one off"; they have offered me a complimentary meal and tour of the kitchen but I'm no Michael Winner so I'll decline that too.

In summary; it IS a nice pub, whether the issues I refer to are one off or not only time will tell, but I would suggest on balance the pub is worth a visit.

Have used this place in the past (first time 1999) before Fulham v West Bromwich Albion fixtures. Always took an age to get served, from my recollection. Never stood out as a special pub, but seemed convenient for the match more than anything else.
