I cant say I noticed much difference refurb wise between Christmas and being in there 2 weeks ago, but then again I had had a lot more to drink at Christmas.

The garden was a really nice atmosphere when it was hot the other week but I suffer a bit being sat in the sun and could have done with more shade for such a big garden. We ended up sitting under the tree at the back and a pigeon did a very large poo on my friends head, which although it was hilarious as it was him and not me, BEWARE.

The bar staff seem chipper and up for a laugh but I think there were a lot of elements that I preferred a few years back before it got done up in a big way.

excellent refurb, a lot brighter inside.
Food menu top end and fast service, will be great for the coming summer.
Uber good beer selection also.

Went here 18 months ago and was mildly impressed. Returned recently and was less so. Had a terrible pint of Adnams Broadside, and despite the bar being quite long they were only serving in one small bit of it leading to an unseemly scrum to get served. The men's toilet was broken as it was on my previous visit. On the plus side the lager selection is decent (bottles of Birra Morreti), and it's got a big garden which I expect is good in the summer.

Also I would just like to state that the Management team only consists of two people. There is the manager and the manageress. Due to the illness of the Manageress the Manager has been working 120+ hours per week. They are very good at their job but alas they are not super human!

One of my favourite local pubs , great location but as with bob brown food was not forthcoming. Last night, having checked that food was on until 9 as it said on the menus, we went to order at 8.45 to be told "the chef is too busy so the kitchen is closed - err sorry". Well good luck to them if they can't be bothered to take the trade when they have it. I fear for them if and when we hit recession - they might then regret not bothering a bit more.

I'm afraid the place is going downhill. I still love the location, but the service was impossible.

Went there with a few friends a couple of weeks ago. Long wait for service. EVERY draught beer was off except extra-cold Guinness and cooking lager, and even that didn't taste quite right. Not even any cider. We asked about food and were told that they didn't do food, even though there were menus on the tables.

"Oh we've stopped now because we don't have enough staff to do food any more" Which might be true of course.

This looks like a management disaster turning into a beer disaster.

I popped in last night with some friends because the food was cheaper than the place next door's. We had some Young's Special - have had better but it wasn't bad - and the aformentioned food. A pleasant place to spend a bit of time, it hasn't had the dreaded Young's makeover that seems to be afflicting a fair few of their pubs these days.
19 Jun 2008 21:22
Lovely garden!
Beers alright.
Bar staff are quite friendly but the reason I/we stopped drinking in here and have not returned for about a year, is that no matter who is running/owning it (and it seems to have changed hands a fair few times in the last few years), they have been rude, grumpy, unwelcoming, and obviously feeling they are so far above their customers that they don't have to even consider good customer service!

27 May 2008 17:35
Went in for a few drinks the other night. Young’s ordinary and special where good. (Not fantastic though). As ever, a real eclectic mix of friendly locals coupled with a nice Young’s pub make for a good evening.

Not a huge fan of Shepherd Neame beers but, that said, on my first visit found this to be a quiet (Sunday afternoon) pub, with friendly locals. Very nice.
7 Apr 2008 20:03
keeps the beer well but other pubs in Greenwich manage this. Landlord was bad and the service terrible if you are a stranger to them. do not go on Tuesday as the place turns into some sort of Music Quiz hell.

Bottom line is there are much better pubs in the area.
2 Apr 2008 13:14
This pub is pretty close to perfection, I cant comment about the food, because as yet I haven't eaten there. The service is fantastic, the beer is well kept, its relaxing, comfortable, great ambience, they have a garden front and rear for the summer, I would recommend it to anyone.

I made a special trip here up from the country to meet some old friends last night. It was my first visit and I was not disappointed. Some very pleasant beers from Meantime Brewery were had in a calm, relaxed and friendly (contrary to some previous comments below)atmosphere. The stout was particularly noteworthy. We popped next door for some cheaper food then I had to catch a train but my friends went back to the Union, so impressed were we by the place.I look forward to making a return visit before too long.
19 Jun 2008 21:28
A few years on from my first review... this place is a few aggravating steps away from perfection. The crowd can get irritating on Friday/Saturday nights (sending you fleeing to the unpretentious Albert down the road) but it's lovely when it's quieter. Prices have gone up a fair deal over the past few years but the beer remains lovely.

But the staff can be aloof - and having overheard the bald bar manager last night bossing his staff about and refusing to move from his own position behind the bar ("go out there and clear the garden, and make sure they move"), it doesn't make you feel good about the place.
9 Jun 2008 13:06
Use to spend a fair amount of time in here but the beer made me lose far more of my life than was warranted by the amount I actually drank of it. It does bad things to my brain! That said, I only drank the raspberry as it was the only one I liked, even though I am normally an appreciator of many lagers and ales.

The atmosphere is trying to be a bit over pretentious, which is definitely apparent in the prices, especially of the food (although it is very nice).

The garden is quite pretty and nice in the summer. It doesn't get as crowded as the more central Greenwich pubs with outside space.

I found a fair proportion of the bar staff a bit aloof and the landlord a bit sarcastic and patronising at times (although that may have just been me).

Its not a bad pub, just not really my kinda place.
Seems to go down well with some I know though.

It had started to rain so I used this as an excuse to visit the pub as we walked past. Good selection of beer. Good atmosphere, will be coming back.
9 May 2008 11:13
Pride, Adnams, Harveys Best, Everards Sly Fox.Carpetted bar area with banquette seating, lovely old brick fireplace to rt of bar and tv showing footie scores on teletext, beyond this a smart wood-floored restaurant area, empty but laid for evening service, well spaced tables, a nice country-dining feel to it although the price for pub-grub dishes leans toward top-end, starters £4-5, mains £10-12. Nice beer garden to rear, popular in Sat’s sunshine, we were lucky to grab a (plastic) table.
28 Apr 2008 12:10
Have been drinking in here on and off for the last 3 years and it has always been a good pub. The welcome is friendly and the beer is well kept with two regularly changing guest ales on top of Adnams and Pride. Recent highlights include Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and Castle Rock beers. Harveys usually makes an appearance during the month.

Finally got to eat there today for Sunday lunch and was really impressed with the food. A fine roast beef dinner - well cooked (medium rare) and tasty meat and perfectly cooked veg. Good value as well I reckon (about 10 quid.) All in all one of the best pubs in Greenwich.

Went here today with a colleague from Croatia. She was delighted with her Fish Pie although it wasn't as large as she'd hoped. My Bubble and Squeak with lamb was plentiful although a little on the cold side. The beer was spot on. The master brew (and we both had one) was among the best I'd tasted. Very friendly service too. I'll take the wife next time.
4 Mar 2008 23:21
The wait for a drink in here was short, the barstaff quick to serve. Unfortunately, the whole pub stank of the maen's toilets and the missus' white wine was tepid and 'odd' tasting. My pints were fine though.
13 Feb 2008 00:07
One of the best pubs in the centre of Greenwich. Generally a decent choice of beers, and never too crowded, so a good bet for getting a seat in my experience. I'm never sure why it isn't more popular. The Sunday lunch left a lot to be desired though.

Visited here on a Saturday Afternoon. Nice pub with friendly staff & locals. My girlfriend & I liked the end of the pub, where it looks like somebodys lounge. The place seemed clean and tidy.

Have moved to area and was pleasently suprised to find a nice friendly local pub to enjoy a good pint of beer and food on a lunch time, quiz night on a tuesday is good to have a laugh with friends... sign on the pub says under new management, manager of pub is a very friendly fellow indeed, aways have chat and laugh with the customers and seams to remember his customers names and makes you feel very welcome.... friday and saturday nights are now a very busy so i have been told by a few of the locals in the pub who make you feel at home... i rate this pub very highly indeed as i feel it is the best pub in the area..

Reviews by BITE users:

Only tourists in there as far as I could see, with prices to match. Like the Trafalgar next door it has excellent views over the river. Had Okell’s Bitter (an IOM brew that I had never seen before) which was absolutely superb. Preferred it to the Trafalgar as the seating and layout seemed more comfortable even though it was a much darker (literally not spiritually!) pub. I think I have yet to find the best pubs in Greenwich – I would not visit Greenwich just to go to the Yacht.
2 Jun 2008 01:36
Decent pub, tucked away down a side alley, that rarely seems busy during the week. Suspect it picks up tourist trdae at weekends. As mentioned by previous posters, good view of the river, so I always wonder why there are not more customers. Part of a company chain, although can't for the life of me remember who - but its the same menu as The Crown in Blackheath. No problem with the clientele.

Usually have 2 or 3 real ales on, with at least one of them rotating on a regular basis. I happened to visit during a beer festival so there was an additional choice. Drank my way through several pints of Hobgoblin and Specky Hen, both in reasonable condition.

Good place for a hassle-free drink.
10 Apr 2008 14:28
Arguably better views than the Trafalgar Tavern next door, but the inside is a bit chainy. Large menu with standard pub grub which looked nice enough. Had three beers on, the Pride was as about ad good as it ever is.
I always think you can smell the toilets in here, although my companions didn’t.
Overall nice enough, and slightly more of a pub than the Trafalgar, but not as good as the Cutty Sark 5mins further on.

Reviews by BITE users:

A tourist trap, but it did have a good range of Nelson Brewery beers on offer. I was with a couple of chums, and we all had the Loose Cannon, but none of us were very keen on it. Unfortunately we could not stay long enough to try any of the others, which is a shame because I had not come across this brewery’s products before. The pub itself has a superb location with an excellent view over the river. Tall rooms with large windows letting in a lot of light made it seem quite welcoming, but the bare boards didn’t seem to work in a pub like this – carpeting would have been better. Didn’t eat there, but the meals passing by looked good, although expensive (of course). Personally, I prefer less obtrusive pubs – this certainly has a lot of front!
2 Jun 2008 20:49
Visited recently and found it to be well-decorated, and with friendly staff. It was delightful to sit outside in the sunshine by the river.
12 May 2008 13:40
God I love this pub. I've eaten in the restaurant several times, the food is very good and tasty. Had a lovely bit of Halibut in there recently. Always get served no problem and am always really happy to just sit in the bar whiling away a few hours staring out of the window having a drink. Could do with some lower strength draft lager for us common lager drinkers.

We love the pub so much we held our wedding reception there. The best wedding venue i could have hoped for. All our guests were amazed by the setting and we could not fault the staff for the service we received. A lovely pub and venue.

Reviews by BITE users:

The Royal George is a small single-roomed Shepherd Neame house, situated a ten or so minute walk from Greenwich train station. Being in a residential area and away from the main hub of the touristy part of town, it was, as expected, a local’s affair. However, those within were very friendly and the lady behind the bar was smiley and welcoming. Interior was basic, yet homely, with a definite nod to the towns maritime history. Brass objects adorned the walls and there is a model ship above the redundant fire place. The only concession to the modern age was seemingly the large plasma screen. Three ales were on offer and that is where the problem lied on my afternoon visit this past Thursday (May 22). My pint of the seasonal Early Bird was foul and although it was readily and apologetically replaced with the more regular Spitfire, that too, failed the taste test in a big way. This was disappointing. If it wasn’t for the beers, I’d probably be open to the idea of a return visit.
24 May 2008 12:11
what a lovely pub and what a lovely atmosphere, and a big thankyou to helen and all the staff for a great st georges day celebration, for those of you that missed it, you missed a cracker, it was an all day party, very rare these days to see everyone in a pub with a smile on their face, great food great beer and great company and also raised a tidy sum for charity. looking forward to next year, but the pub is open all year so pop in and you will be guaranteed a warm and hearty welcome.
24 Apr 2008 14:18
Great, great little pub. In the past year it has been taken over by a new landlady who is doing a fantastic job. While it is very much a locals-type pub the staff are incredibly friendly to everyone who comes through the door and make it their business to find out everyone's name, remember their drink etc. They've now got the logfire going, too. Shepherd Neame beers always available and looked after. A real hidden gem, particularly during the day when it is quieter (as the pub is so small it doesn't take many people to make it appear rammed).
Well worth a look if you want a down-to-earth pub in the Greenwich area.

Cracking "proper boozer", an antidote to the Greenwich Union and a reminder to the Richard I of how a pub should really be. Good place to watch football, too.
9 Jun 2008 13:10
Great great pub!

Far superior to the Richard or the Union.

Fun, eclectit duke box, layed back, tradtitional, nice bar staff, great old pub decor.

Its pretty much my local even though I live no where near it!

Have many, many good memories of evenings in this place.
27 May 2008 17:09
Probably my favourite pub of the Union/Richard/Albert triumvirate. Better selection of beer than the "Young's" (ruined by Charles Wells), and sugared-up toddlers than The Union, it also has a great dart board location, and is much bigger than expected from the outside. Will stop in here more often when wandering home from Greenwich.

Reviews by BITE users:

The user Surfandturf has got it spot on, this is not a 'purists' pub that could be viewed as a potential local, though it does have a brilliant garden bar for fine days. It's a pub that serves fancy food and as such it is second to nowhere else I've been in London, and that's as someone who has been to two of Gordon Ramsey's restaurants in the last 4 months. The Guildford's food is amazing, pricey for a pub but you won't be disappointed, still excellent value considering the high quality.
15 Jul 2008 20:27
This really isn't a pub anymore, more of a rather middle class restaurant. That said the service was friendly, the food excellent and the London Pride in good condition. Big thumbs up.
7 Apr 2008 20:00
I don't understand what people are posting about here. This place serves the best food not just of any pub in the area but any restaurant also.

If you find good food "poncey" i suggest you try the Graduate up the road which will gladly serve you cheap nasty beer all day long. Or if you genuinely are after a proper pint try the Ashburnham Arms 30 secs away. Shepherd Neame on tap & a great pub.

I for one am grateful for a reasonably priced Bistro/Pub on the doorstep
Would recommend the Sunday lunch at a tenner. Which is cheaper that many other pubs in serving a lot lot less nearby.

This has to be one of the greatest pub / restaurants in london. The food, service andvatmosphere are outstanding. A wonderful selection of beers and their award winning beer garden is fantastic. One of my favourite spots for supper and a drink especialy in summer. It is truly brilliant I recommend it to anyone who wants a smart meal or drink in superb surroundings.
8 May 2008 11:58
Very average beer selection. Can't make much comment on the food as didn't eat but Old Speckled Hen and London Pride does not make a good beer selection. Pleasant atmosphere, but lacking in other respects. Would go back to try food.
21 Mar 2008 00:31
Pretty full on a Sunday afternoon. Quite a few 20-something or 30-something couples, many with young kids. A amattering of older men watching the footy, a handful of teenagers. Going by the accents these are mostly Londoners not visitors or tourists.

Obviously a local, but a bit upmarket by the standards of East Greenwich. They obviously want to be cool - jazz as background music, mildly more imaginative menu than the neighbours (not quite "gastro" but a bit tricksy, and not expensive), art on the walls.

The beer was good and the folk seemed friendly. And some of the young mummys looked very yummy.

This place could be great. The potential is there but unfortunately the nice layout and lighting is spoiled by the shit staff and clientele. When we went in there as part of a night out in Greenwich, the place was full of bone idle student types and couldn't give a feck barmen. Pity because there's a lovely backroom and great pub trying to leap out.
13 Feb 2008 00:25
In there last night, three ales on tap two of which kept coming up cloudy, staff squirting each other with soft drinks dispenser, music ok.

Excellent little watering hole - Rob and his team are superb, with one or two exceptions. Beer always top notch. Highly recommended, although toilets could do with a spruce up and be kept a little more clean.
