Reviews by BITE users:

The relaxed atmosphere, friendly governor and the perfect sound level of the music made my short stay in here very pleasant.
The lounge like area with the fire blazing was an excellent touch. It was 3 quid a pint which seems pretty average for this area.
If I’m around this area again I will definitely try for a longer stay.

Excellent pub - beautifully kept Edwardian decor with real fire. Authentic feel - everything's brown - but that's how it was in the old days! Good beer and friendly bar staff as well.

Good beer all round, and a fine building. Well worth a visit...

I’ve been into the Bell and Crown on many occasions since my last review and have to report that the staff’s attitude is now excellent and this is still the best venue in the area for a few jars. I wish that I lived more locally!

Best pub in the the near-by area - well run, staff that can calculate and serve more than one drink at a time and nice location.

The usual spluttering of locals but that's what a pubs for.

Don't sit outside on a full spring tide!!!

Good pub on riverside with oak panelled interior and small patio. Despite serving a wide range of food, it has resisted the temptation to become a restaurant in all but name and is still very much a pub which welcomes those who just drop in just for a pint

I remember when this pub was managed by Fullers - it was neglected by the brewery. It has been revived and is now a kind of oasis beside the A4. They have a board outside which says 'Come over to the other side', which is their slightly spooky way of advertising the garden. The pub goes back to 1657, in the original building, and has a character barman who appears to have been there all that time! Beer's good, food good, dont want much more.

nice pub good beer...
Limited but nice selection of well kept cask ales (Fullers), and some decent lagers. Popped in Tuesday afternoon, and found the ales very well kept, three on tap. My lager was nice and cold
This place had a lovely atmosphere when I went in on Friday night. The place was packed with the young, hip business crowd from the Hogarth Business Park, along with a crazy party of Sex Pistol freaks from God knows where. Just got new chefs, apparently, and is now doing food in the evening.

Great pub with great beer and great food, barstaff are extreamly freindly especially the new manager she seams to be injecting a new lease of life into this traditional old english pub.

Alright little boozer, great for smokers, good little garden at the back with screen for footie, screens everywhere inside the pub. Pool table as well which is another bonus, tricky to find them these days. But judging from previous posts the food has changed - A LOT! I was there for the Utd Chelski final last night and three of us braved something from the menu - HORRIFIC doesn't even come close - but then when everything on the menu costs £5 (with the exceptioon of the Angus rump steak - £8), what can you expect? Food really is bad. I am not a fussy eater, in fact I'll eat anything but I struggled to finish the 'chicken burger'. Good chips though. Plus points - screens; garden; poo table. On the downside - don't eat there!

This is an Irish ‘shop conversion’ pub and I think that it has been done very well. As with all these pubs there is live music and Sky television. I loved the layout inside and one of the major gripes that this pub has received in previous posts is that it was too smoky, but obviously this is not a problem anymore since the smoking ban.

The barmaid was very friendly and a pint costs £3.10 which is basically in line with all the other pubs in the area.

I think to enjoy yourself in one of these pubs you have to be in the correct frame of mind, which I normally am!

Superb pub - love the beer garden with screen to watch the football on - Im not even a smoker but it was nice sitting outside in the evening watching Hibs stuff Hearts Scum.

90/10 toward food rather than beer and as beer is what this site is about it gets marked down slightly.
Fine to pop in for a pint with er indoors but inpossible to find a seat and would also feel awkward if you went there with the lads just in case the volume increased above a whisper.
29 Jun 2008 16:34
Very old pub, great building, wonderfully located on the river. It is a Chef & Brewer so the food is of a reasonable standard and they tend to look after the place quite well.

For the romantic, you would in many ways rather this was more of an old fashioned pub and less of a semi-restaurant. But the economics of it dictate that a valuable site like this needs to rake in food sales so there it is.
3 Mar 2008 12:55
Good choice of ales in an interesting and rambling old pub which seems to cater reasonably well for both drinkers and diners. It is in a great location for summer evenings but the proportion of tables with 'reserved' notices on them however is somewhat irritating.

Reviews by BITE users:

Is this pub a pub or not?

I would say that a varied selection of premium lagers alongside IPA and Abbott Ale would swing the answer towards it being classed as a pub. The problem arises when you ask yourself whether a pub would have 90% of its tables set out with place mats, cutlery, salt crystals, pepper, vinaigrette and large wine glasses.

I think that the Bollo is trying to attract a certain type of clientele and from the sound of the e-mail bookings that they were talking about I think that they maybe doing just that.

I’ll grant them the fact that it was during a lunchtime that I visited, but I did feel out of place as I hadn’t ordered any food and I don’t think that this should be the case in any pub.
30 Apr 2008 15:02
Absolutely appalling. The worst service that I have experienced in London. 10 of us went in for lunch and apart from the fact it took them an hour from us sitting down to bring out our starters, there was a 90 minute gap between the first of us receiving our main course and the last of us receiving our main course. Despite this, the staff swan around as if there are working at Gordon Ramsay.

All in all then, a place that thinks it is special but in reality is simply a pretentous gastropub run by half wits.

Went here once for a meal with friends. We lingered over drinks and the staff wanted us to leave so they turned the lights out! Never been back.

An allright pub.

By the way - why does BITE have continual pop ups now? Cut it out lads
29 Apr 2008 22:07
Decent enough pub in a good location but looking a bit tired and, as the previous poster said, it could do with a sensitive overhaul (emphasis on sensitive - doesn't need tearing apart and turning into something it isn't).
3 Mar 2008 13:00
The least of the pubs in Strand on the Green, which is a shame because it could be a real corker. Really needs a sensitive overhaul, a bit of care and some enthusiasm from the staff.

Reviews by BITE users:

With Gordon Ramsey involved it is obviously a gastro pub, which is not my sort of thing, but in my opinion it has been done very well. The public bar (image 2) is quite nice, but there isn’t much seating, so get there early. There are a couple of sofas by the front windows, some small tables with armchairs dotted about and the bar is lined with bar stools. There is a large dining area to the rear of the pub leading onto a fairly small, but well presented beer garden.

I found all of the staff to be friendly and polite and the drinks on offer were Pride, Deuchars, Leffe, San Miguel, Fosters and Guinness.

As I said before I am not a great fan of gastro pubs, but this place is pleasant enough for me to revisit.
14 Jun 2008 13:15
Now an archetypal gastro pub. Much of it given over to expensive dining - you know the type. London Pride and Deuchars IPA on though. 'Drinking-only' tables are limited in number from my evening visit (I expect it's the same at lunchtime too). Full of the "Chiswick set" and obviously doing well, as was at near capacity on a Tues night.
30 Apr 2008 17:44
gordon ramsay has bought it. Menu is pretentious 'Traditional English' ie Homemade Scotch Egg with HP sauce. Went a few nights ago - didn't eat because although pub was full - it was completely lacking in atmosphere. Noted staff were in uniforms although Gordon had had a go at a pub owner in his kitchen nightmares program for making staff look too stuffy.

Ahh, this picture does it no justice! What a fantastic pub! Beautiful decor and friendly atmosphere, great beers and tasty food. I have been in three times this week since first going in on Sunday for lunch (I had the lamb shank, YUM!)
As a chiswick resident I can positively say that this pub has totally turned around from the reputation it once had, to a pub I will definately be frequenting with my chums and am SO taking my Dad to see the live jazz on fathers day. Well done!
12 Jun 2008 20:12
I had to wait to be served as the lone barmaid was messing about with the coffee machine behind the bar. Whilst I waited I noted that there were lots of different lagers available along with Pride, Tim Taylor, Honeydew and Bombardier. When I was finally served the barmaid was friendly although she may have waited until she had given my change back to me before answering the ringing phone.

I had a butchers at the food menu and it seemed like proper down to earth pub food – Makes a change!

There is a covered area outside the pub to the rear and the front.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to drink here, but there are far worse in Chiswick.
28 Apr 2008 13:44
Noticed the revamped exterior and decided to call in to check it out as haven't been in for ages. Recently refurbed about 6 weeks ago. Very impressed with the new interior decor. Had just eaten elsewhere, but the packhorse has a good traditional pub menu (not usual gastro stuff you see everywhere now) Will definately visit again to try the food.
Service was okay, although had run out of sparkling mineral water. Was a quiet Sunday afternoon. Be interesting to see what it's like when busier.

Reviews by BITE users:

I agree with the last review, not sure where the low rating came from. It was sunny day when i drank here recently, they had a guy playing some acoustic songs and it was packed outside. Good atmosphere, would certainly drink there again.
5 Jun 2008 17:01
I popped into the Barley Mow this lunchtime and had a quick pint of Fosters which came in at £3.10, so it has gone up 20p in two years. As far as I could see it is a free house with the usual lagers on offer along with Doombar. There were two other pumps, but their clips were turned around. The barmaid was a little dozy, but she was extremely friendly with it.

It’s a long pub with the bar running along one side of it. There is an entrance at both ends and one of the ends, not sure if it is the front or the back, has some covered seating. This area also has a BBQ and barrels of Pride and Budweiser. I’d imagine the extra “mini-bar” outside is for those hot and busy summer days.

I’m not entirely sure why this place has such a low rating. I certainly found it to be no different to the many other pubs along Chiswick high road and I certainly wouldn’t mind if I had to return.
30 Apr 2008 16:08
I agree with the point below, used to be a good pub when the pool tables were there, and had a good atmosphere in general. Thats all gone now1 :(

Great beer garden but the food there is terrible! I ordered fish and green vegetables expecting my veg to be brocolli, beans, peas or somthing similar instead I got half a boiled cabbage! It was disgusting! The portion sizes were tiny too.
I'd give it a 7/10 for the beer garden but a 2/10 for food.
2 Aug 2008 21:40
I was greeted by a friendly barman when I ordered my £3.60 pint of Heineken (ouch, this is the 2nd pub in a week that has charged me this). Upon sitting down I noticed Black Sheep, Bombardier and Spitfire all available along with a selection of premium lagers. There was also a blackboard hanging from the ceiling behind the bar with this week’s ale listed, which were Youngs, Oldwagg, Daleside Legover, Everards Tiger and Deuchars IPA.

There is nothing wrong with this pub, but I personally don’t think that it was worth the detour from the High Road. Having said this though, it is better than the current 3.4 rating the pub has inherited from its previous incarnation.
30 Apr 2008 17:13
Went back to try the food at the weekend having seen quite a positive review in the weekend papers. I had to agree with the critic - it was impressive for a pub that hosted elvis nights a few months ago. I had a delicious steak with chips and bearnaise, washed down with a pint of Addlestones and followed swiftly by treacle tart with clotted cream. Think I will take my soon to be girlfriend on a date there.
