user reviews of the Queen Adelaide, Wandsworth

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

trendy middle class pub, with an emphasis on dining but a great place for a beer none the less.

fantastic array of beers and the food is great. the decor is cosy yet fashionable. very friendly staff.

nice

This used to be a nice local but after an 'upgrade' they have totally destroyed it. The food is now posh with broad bean puree, celeriac mash and triple cooked chips. Couldn't even provide mayonnaise for the so called chips which were actually fries. Another customer was paying at the bar while I was there mentioning they sent back a certain dish because of a hair in the food.
A bit pricy as well

Pub 3 of a crawl

Checked out the website. Fresh from a fabulous transformation.

Didnt see it before but it now has absolutely no character. Well done to the architects.

Ginger & fig hadwash in the toilets. lots of pastel shades on the wall.
Basically a gastro pub by numbers.

Saying that 6 real ales. 3 from youngs and 3 guests. We had Portobello Star which was a whopping £16.36 for 4 pints. I did notice that the Youngs beer was a lot cheaper. Average £3.70ish for Special/Bitter.

Its just so samey for the area. And they played Fame on the juke box. Ouch

Stopped in the Queen Adelaide for dinner and a couple of pints mid week. It was less than half full and very pleasant. A good range of pu food was on offer anmd our choices, steaks and burgers, were very well cooked, tasty and at 10 a head good value for the quality and quanitity. The usual youngs beers were available and the Special and London Gold were well kept and enjoyable. We will be popping in here again to eat or just for a pint or three in future.

3 weeks ago sunday roast was served cold. This time realised we were over charged, we received a plain "sorry about that". When food arrived we became very dissapointed, tasteless rubbery burgers which are overly parsleyed. When waiter came back from kitchen, said that they didn`t have any problems today and no complaints received. This brought more annoyment to us as we were expecting "we`ll sort it out" approach but sadly they didn`t care. Manager saw the problem and didn`t even move his finger. We just left both our burgers, feeling hungry as we arrived If I`m dying from thirst I don`t think I`d go there for a drink. Cold staff apart from the waiter who did try to talk to kitchen. As another user said, yes it`s good for sport. %100 agreed. We will never eat there again.
local9753 - 5 Jun 2011 15:56
Great Sunday Afternoon pub. Usually good food (though avoid the sausage platter as this is just poor value). Good Youngs Beers. Only OK for sport.
Rasputin0 - 20 Dec 2010 15:44
After the Old Sergeant, the Spread Eagle and the Grapes, this was my fourth consecutive Youngs pub and proved quite a contrast to the others. Whilst the beer range was similar - Youngs Special & Ordinary, Wells Bombardier & Sharps Doom Bar, and the impressive tiling in the doorway hinted that this may be similar to the others architecturally, the sound of loud booming music on approach indicated that this was clearly going to be a different experience. The crowd were all fairly young and the place was packed with all tables taken. The interior had a modern slant. I'm afraid this is no longer my kind of scene! Although I can imagine this is just what many people are looking for.
blue_scrumpy - 6 Dec 2010 22:18
The gorgeous blonde that seems to run the pub always puts a smile on my face!
liquor_poker - 23 Nov 2009 23:45
Popped into the Queen Adelaide on a walk back from Putney. I have not been before and would have never known that they had a nice quiet little garden with a massive tented area.

Found the bitter to be alittle warmer than usual but it tasted good and the menu looked alright. Will definatley be thnking ofcoming here next summer when the sun comes out.
Tonslyes_are_us - 16 Sep 2009 14:44
Typical Youngs pub. Slightly upmarket with plush seats and a big decked garden. Slightly pricey. Beer OK, Staff OK. Visited with a mate but wouldn't bust a gut to go again, especially as I live in Essex
twineyboy - 5 Sep 2009 11:18
Just another Youngs pub that has been done up. Food is ok, but way overpriced. 8 for a salad, 10 for a burger if memory serves me.

Good if you have kids, in fact on a Sunday you look out of place if you don't have kids with you.
marcovanpenners - 8 Jun 2009 15:33
Winter Warmer - served too cold for me. Enthusiastic greeting from the chap behind the bar. I wish I could get used to Youngs corporate ref-furbs. Nice enough for a quiet Fiday lunchtime.
southfields - 13 Dec 2008 11:21
Re the commenst below. It is true that about 7 years ago the pub had lost it's way. But before that time it was indeed a real local pub and was far more busy that it is now - at all hours on every day of the week. This was certainly true in the early to late 1990s when I used it and before it went downhill for a time prior to the current refurb a few years ago.
daisy1 - 27 May 2008 17:14
DEAR ONE AND ALL........

Finally the sanity of young's is slowly returning. I found out some information today that has cheered me up immensely -

TIM LEASE (MANAGER) HAS GONE!

I just hope that the current staff will not continue in his footsteps. I'm sure they wont, in general they all seemed friendly and welcoming, it was just that manager who was the problem.

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!

checkoutguy - 19 Apr 2008 11:18
Reviews below are a load of rubbish - when we first moved to the area about seven years ago this pub was quiet, empty, dirty and the Cats Back and Hop Pole were signicantly better, so we never bothered to travel the extra 2 minutes walk. Now it has one of the best beer gardens in the area (plus an excellent smoking solution for those interested), the staff have never been anything but polite, the food is very good (hence the multiple return visits), the quiz night on Mondays was good fun, the occassional live music has been brilliant. RIP? This pub has never been better or busier.
londondrinker - 1 Apr 2008 04:28
Another good pub ruined. I presume that there's enough profit in serving a select minority with money to burn.
Holmesdale - 22 Jan 2008 10:16
I used to really enjoy my occasional visits to this friendly pub, which was obviously firmly established in the local community. But my last visit was just that. Now it has become just another mediocre gastropub - souless and anonymous - and an unpleasantly unwelcome place to visit. In the short-term rush for the notoriously fickle yuppie market Young's have ripped the heart out of this once lovely local. The Queen Adelaide, RIP.
lewisham_publover - 19 Jan 2008 14:35
This once great pub has lost its soul. All is now angled towards the yuppies from the nearby Riverside development, yet even they now seem disinclined to suffer its raucous Muzak and inflated prices. The final insult came when the manager decided to ban the Queen Adelaide cricket team and all their friends, thus completing the cleansing of the pub of anyone aged over 45.
edwin5 - 11 Jan 2008 17:33
what have young's done ? this
used
to be such a lovely pub when the old governors where here. when are young's ever going to learn to stay old school. Just another gastro yuppie pub
tinkerbell - 10 Jan 2008 23:38
very bad not one of the young's best pubs the service was crap and the food appauling, will not be going there again.
earthboy - 22 Aug 2007 19:26
A youngs gastro,(overpriced, boring menu).Surely could have done better with this place, used to be a proper pub,now extremely slow waitress service from staff who did not understand request for real ale. I hate to think what is going on with Youngs strategy in producing these monsters, and forgetting the standards that made them popular in the first place
sadies - 30 Jul 2007 15:07
Great local pub. We have been to several quiz nights here (being Kiwi's we did not do well with many of the local questions) but have enjoyed the non smoking environment. Have tried a good range of ales, several meals and the odd swift half in the garden. Our favourite local!
mooloomitch - 29 Jun 2007 15:46
Very pleasant pub which is cavernous and so we were easily able to get a seat. Prices are high especially for food
Simon28 - 11 Jun 2007 15:56
This pub is my "local" not my nearest as I have to pass 3 other shabby efforts to get here.
The food is good quality pub grub and the beers are the usual mix of Youngs/Wells with the odd guest thrown in.

The refurb, which is now about a year old has stood the test of time and the no smoking ban which came in in April (for this pub) has cleaned up the air.

Great for a lazy weekend afternoon or meeting friends for a pub dinner during the week.
whileyn - 17 May 2007 19:34
Well I have to say I disagree with some of the recent posters - previously just a rather boring boozer with dreary decor, it's still a proper pub, but has become much lighter, brighter and more tasteful place to go.
firelees - 18 Jan 2007 23:26
Not that keen on the refurb: I didn't actually recognise it as being somewhere I've already been into.
anonymous - 27 Dec 2006 23:58
I just can't see the attraction, its dour, far too organised, and full of signs telling you what to do. Please wait here to be seated, No Running, No Smoking, Please do not stand here, Mind the Gap etc.. Staff seem totally disinterested in everything around them.
Joe90 - 13 Dec 2006 03:31
This place is now more a a food place then a pub. Seemed to be full of the fulham crowd flashing their credit cards about. Horrible.
TheWizard - 4 Dec 2006 15:47
I hadn't been in here for years, it used to be a nice little boozer, quite quiet with good beer. But it looks like Young's move to Bedford really has affected the quality of beer and the Special has gone right downhill, I actually had to leave half my pint. Normally I would put this down to the pub, but I had the same watery unpleasant pint in the Crane round the corner. Not really worth the effort, disappointing.
owenjones - 2 Nov 2006 14:46
Been here a few times now on various pretences and can't find much to grumble about. I went for a big meeting of mates in summer and the garden was really nice to sit and relax in, with plenty of booze and plenty of room.

Another weekend I was in for a big birthday bash and we had a nice big table in the decked area. Definitely have no complaints over seating, ambience etc. Maybe more beers would do the pub justice, but having eaten here too, I can safely say the food is nice too (have the lamb!!).

All in all a good pub, friendly clientele, stunning ladies in attendance every time I've been, there is good service and the food and drinks are pretty reasonably priced. I'll be going back, especially since the Jolly Gardener is now so bad.
Colonel - 27 Oct 2006 14:09
Been here a few times now - good food, good selection of beers and the bar staff are helpful. The place is well laid out and has a no smoking area. It's comfy, good lighting - more foody than pubby. My only gripe is the food doesn't always live upto expectations as described on the menu. I orederd chicken pie on sunday - looked great - but had 2 small pieces of chicken in and that was it....the rest was leek. Sonme of the staff don't speak english too well which makes complaining a waste of time - I don't want to be a nusance. Yopu get served quickly and everyone is polite.
Flawed - 1 Sep 2006 16:59
At last iv'e found my local...The Queen adelaide is great not like the normal local pubs in wandsworth.
Some things were a bit over priced but we didn't mind as we all felt so relaxed and welcomed. The food board thingies are a godsend if you're with your friends. Will be going back again and again.
zuska - 29 Aug 2006 11:44
What a shame "TomN" has had a bad experience here.
My wife & I eat here regularly and have always found the standard of food very high, we are addicted to their lamb shoulders, and the chefs pies are really tasty, with the great thing about this pub is the friendliness of the staff.
We live just around the corner and have been using it since last September when it first re-opened, with never a complaint!!
Sometimes they get really busy at weekends, maybe that was an occasion when some menu items ran out.
We still give it a 9/10.

daw - 28 Aug 2006 18:21
Been 3 times for food and drink. Problems on every ocassion. First time they had most items from the main menu unavailable. Next time a chicken fillet was raw. The 3rd and last time the "real burgers" were cremated beyond recognition. To cap it all we were told that they could not be made "medium" only be served "well done" - reheated more like! No refund given after complaint.
Needless to say we won't be going again for food.
TomN - 22 Aug 2006 10:12
Went last night as The Cats Back had only 1 draft ale and no peanuts either. Beers better here at the Queen Adelaide and excellent food and service too
WandsworthBill - 18 Aug 2006 12:54
Great pub with plenty of space in their garden area for those warm days..
Service is quick and staff are pleasant with a good selection of beers and wine available..
Food is only standard pub grub but reasonably priced..
Would recomend it for lazy sundays or meeting mates..

hamish - 12 Aug 2006 18:09
Popped in here for a quick pint yesterday as the Cat's Back was rammed. Agree with the previous comments about Youngs spending huge amounts of money renovating this place, but they have done a good job (unlike say, the Boathouse).

Was still pretty busy but we managed to get a seat in marquee bit outside. All the usual Youngs' beers, plus Leffe on tap (not recommended for Sunday afternoon). Really good food as well. Prices are a little on the steep side. Bogs were the cleanest I have seen in a pub in London.

Experience only really marred by a drinking buddy worrying about whether the door to the garden was open or closed...possibly due to Leffe-induced paranoia.
burnsy - 3 Apr 2006 10:41
Picture it, its Mothers Day you've totally forgotten to book anything, you call the best pub in Wandworth on the off chance they have had a cancellation or something and they set up a forth sitting at 7pm just for you and your family offering the full/amazing Sunday roast offer + our very own waitress.

Truly sensational experience, so i wanted to tell everyone so there you have it, well done Queen Adelaide and long may you reign.
Lee_B - 27 Mar 2006 21:47
This is one of our local pubs and I have to say "Hats off to Young's Brewery". The refurb is a great job, the beer is perfect - and it should be as the pub is no more than 400m from the brewery.
The food is great, not bad value as I have certainly spent more for less.

If you do come to this pub, make sure you are ready for a relaxing drink and have a few hours to spend with friends you want to talk to. The background music is actually low enough to facilitate talking - whatever next!
anonymous - 28 Feb 2006 16:31
Jesus! They've spent about $20 billion doing it up!

This was a post Sunday league football venue for my team pre-refurb and was a pleasant 'old school' pub with decent punters. Has now been turned effectively into a restraunt with about 1000 tables - you're pretty much obliged to sit as there's little room to stand and booze.
Nice bar staff and good bogs but not a mans pub - place was ramjammed on the early Friday evening I visited, mainly with young couples and small groups. Has a slightly pretentious air probably bought about by the new punters coming from the new myriad yuppie flats recently errected next door.
Not bad if you're in the mood. Have a wash beforehand though.
evers. - 29 Jan 2006 00:22
Left the Orange Tree in Richmond the other week and met up with some friends in here. It was like walking back into the same pub! Obviously Youngs are streamlining the decor of some of their older pubs and they've done a really nice job in doing so (even if they do look the same). Still keeping the pub feel, it's not too modern and the atmosphere was great. Didn't have any food just a few drinks, which were not the cheapest but you'd forgive that for being in a pleasant environment.
pinot - 5 Dec 2005 15:13
Must have the best garden in the area, which you can use all year round as there are tents and heaters. Really friendly place with a chilled out atmospehere.
anonymous - 24 Oct 2005 17:30
Nice wide choice of food, good home made quality. Portion size good. Garden great improvement on before, now decked, with heated marquee areas. Would recommend to everyone, Young and Old.
anonymous - 22 Sep 2005 21:44
How have they done it. Too huge expense, excellent decor.. but more amazingly a pub that finally delivers good food and good service, majority of the staff are outstanding and the rest still better than you usually get in the industry. As for the food, tell me some where better to it, the food tastes fresh and they even delcare which farms your food has come from.. bit spooky. You must visit here, beats every pub in Wandsworth and probably London. God knows what the comments about brought in food were.. maybe they were un happy the animals were not actually in the fabulous garden.. I will be back.
anonymous - 22 Sep 2005 21:27
Well, my friends and I have finally managed to find a fantastic pub in Wandsworth, and believe you me, we have been in them all!!!

A group of 10 of us popped in for a few drinks and to have a meal to celebrate a birthday, and we were made to feel so welcome. The interior is beautiful, and the beer garden fantastic. Each member of staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, and I feel this pub is a credit to the new licencees, Debbie and Alex.

I can't imagine how anyone could believe that the food wasn't fresh because it was absolutely delicious. As most of my frends and I had a different meal, I had the pleasure of sampling the majority of the menu in one evening and can honestly say, it was the best pub food I have tasted in London. I even had the pleasure in meeting the Head Chef...

I strongly disagree with the anonymous messengers comments of the 11th September about the prices etc. The Queen Adelaide makes the over priced, want-to-be wine bar pubs, in neighbouring areas look what they are - a waste of time and money! The prices are quite in keeping with the fact that this pub is in the heart of S W London. I can only imagine that these people are used to something very different, and clearly have no idea about London living. Either that, or they don't get out much!!!

Well done to all the staff at the Queen Adelaide. Keep up the fantastic work and ignore jealous bitter comments made by narrow minded individuals. See you again very soon for another brilliant evening...

anonymous - 15 Sep 2005 17:31
Can’t disagree more strongly with the comments on 11th Sept. I found the staff to be friendly and efficient, the food to high quality and the Young’s beers as good as ever. The managers are very pleasant and went out of their way to assist us, so much so that we have reserved a table for Christmas! I am very happy to have Queen Adelaide back up and running in its new guise.
drawboy - 14 Sep 2005 10:03
Finally made it to the new & improved Queen Adelaide at the weekend...what a different place it has become! Very shiny & new but should be comfortable once everything gets a little more worn in. Beer very good (as you would hope around the corner from the brewery!!) though slightly more expensive as the previous review noted. Food ok, nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible. Again more expensive, some might say too expensive for what you are getting.

All in all, a lovely pub, we'll be back.
thebees - 13 Sep 2005 23:52
Well its open & very obvious how much money Youngs have thrown at it!! Now a beautiful place, very much in the style of the County Arms & the Boathouse. Not much standing room at the bar, they obviously want you to sit at the many tables. More expensive than expected for Wandsworth (2.95 for a pint of Fosters!! & 3.50 for a half pint of Pimms...no fancy fruit just lime!!) even for the Putney end. They have done a great job with outside, although it is a shame to have lost so much of the grass. Worthy of a quick stop, although its lost a lot of its old character.
The food though, pass on if you value your money & your stomach. Simple enough menu, obviously everything is bought in however (meats, sauces etc.) Even our mash potato tasted out of a packet. If I were paying 5-6 for a meal I could deal with that, but when most mains are around the 12-14 mark, I want something fresh & outstanding, not ordinary. A shame really, as it could be fabulous. As I said in my last review, I'll still be sticking to The Kings Arms where EVERYTHING is homemade...bread, pasta, sausages...can't go wrong! Lots of staff so service is prompt & friendly, but somewhat distant. Teething problems, lets hope!!
anonymous - 11 Sep 2005 08:39
Is due to open this week, seems to be trying to be very food orientated but as most Youngs managed houses go, doubtfully will be anything to write home about. Looks like the garden is now a conservatory which is a shame.

Although I'm very curious, I'll be sticking to The Kings Arms on the high street which appears to have stolen quite a few of the Queen Adelaide's customers while it's been closed. Spectacular food, massive garden & well looked after beer. There must be a reason you can't go a day in the Kings without someone from Youngs being there for a pint or lunch (or more often than not both). I hope the Queen Adeliade doesn't make for too much competition.
anonymous - 28 Aug 2005 23:55
We have always loved the Queen Adelaide and I must say that the last managers Liam and |Karen were teriffic!! So friendly and cared about their customers. Its a shame they will not be returning to the pub after the refurb but I do believe that they are now at the green man putney heath so we shall be visiting them up there!!
anonymous - 4 Jul 2005 14:27
According to Des in The Grapes - who should know - it's going to be a gastro pub. Not sure what will happen to the garden, which looks like it's going to be dug up and incorporated into the inside of the building
JohnBonser - 20 Jun 2005 13:07
Pub is currently closed for refurbishment - looks like the interior has been completely gutted and it is being extended at the back - more news when I have it
JohnBonser - 6 Jun 2005 11:09
I agree that this is a good pub - but it suffers from being equidistant from Wandworth and Putney and hence appears to be in no - mans land, although admittedly it is on the bus route - 220.
Very quiet last Sunday afternoon - probably because it wasn't showing the football, but this is a friendly pleasant pub and well worth visiting
JohnBonser - 22 Mar 2005 13:01
Beautiful pub from the outside and a great outdoor area in Summer. Bit of a "Brigadoon" pub though as I only ever seem to see people in there ever 100 years or so. Not sure why that's the case as this IS a good little pub!
benfuller71 - 30 Jan 2005 14:54
Pub no longer has Sky TV.
McBain - 13 Nov 2004 09:22
Visited during the afternoon, when it's quiet. Certainly appeared fine, pleasant barman, tasty Special.
canastajim - 23 Mar 2004 13:13
A good, traditional Young's pub in the back streets of Wandsworth. A lively buzz in the evenings, and the beer is in tip top condition - the Winter Warmer is worth trying out. A great all-round pub definitely worth visiting.
