Hard to work out Wetherspoon thinking. The Grid is at long last a really vibrant community. No rowdy or rough types...just genuine convivial regulars. Strangers are made to feel welcome by the young, enthusiastic manager and staff. Food the most reliable it has ever been. A proper and well run "local".... which Wetherspoons has rewarded with impending closure!

Friendly drinkers in a routine JDW pub. Good range of beer and smiling staff. Judging by previous comments this is a massive improvement.

Oh Dear. Well the swearing, smoking, high spending riff raff have been relocated to the Garage. Very very well done for that. However, it seems the emphasis is now on making other- more sedate - regulars uncomfortable too. Taking away the bar stools is an example. Although most managers seek to encourage real ale drinkers, why is it that so often beers are "coming soon". Overall a sense of being unwelcome, loss of sociability and lack of attention to the beer range.

visited 9/11/10 oh dear just as you think spoons are getting some nice bars and good staff you have the grid used to be ok with old manager new girl needs help or sack, poor staff, poor kept ales and dirty. Agree its better than railway in putney but then what bar isnt.
familyman23 - 14 Nov 2010 17:47
Not a bad JDW by any means - if you want a real sh1thole, check out the railway in putney!

Admittedly, i'd take the British Legion over here anyday, but for a local "Monday Club" when you're hiding from work, can't go wrong.

Lurking smokers blocking the front door - not a good start. Inside you find a rather pokey little 'spoons of no real distinction. Eight handpumps, but one was off, two were doubled-up with the same beer and another one was the stnadard dull Ruddles; so not much choice during what is supposed to be their biggest ever real ale festival. Hopeless barman who had no idea who was next and couldn't even work out which pump was which once he finally got round to serving you. I suppose I should say that the beer was fine when it was finally delivered, but otherwise there is very little to recommend this place.

I give in.
Can no longer defend this pub.
Pick your day and time to visit and take advantage of the prices...but it is not a place to linger.

Spent an evening here last night with four friends, one of whom was celebrating his birthday. Standard Wetherspoons branch, with a typical JDW ale range (regional breweries not micros) and standard menu. Friendly businesslike staff. Pub divided into separate drinking areas by partitioning, with the area around the bar being the busiest last night. The manager (if that was who he was) made valiant efforts to deal with an abusive customer who had to be asked several times to leave before peace could return. The pub could do with one or two extra staff to handle incidents of this nature. The rude customers did not spoil our enjoyment of the pub; to summarise the Grid is much the same as any JDW branch I have visited.

The best way to evaluate anything is to try it for yourself. Walking past a pub certainly does not say it all. There is a new, eager manager who is keen to attract new custom. Both the inside and outside are much fresher now, but admittedly with lack of investment in the property it will always be difficult to maintain standards. Give it a try Miss Hulahoop

I walked past a few moths ago to find the Replingham Road partly cordoned off, police everywhere and blood and glass on the tarmac. I don't think there's any need to say much more.

Second visit last night. Jolly nice atmosphere. People and bar staff friendly. Good real ales well served. Will definitely return

I am genuinely shocked by the last review. The comment about the Grisd having a bad reputation in the past is odd. I have lived on Replingham road now for two years and at first I thought the Grid was a typical local working man's pub. However, after two years I can honestly say it is a haven for the truly appauling members of this community. I am self employed and often work from home. Becuase of this I am privvy to the activity of the Grid as I live within sight of and earshot of conversations which originate in both the Grid and its neighbour the Garage. The difference between the two is the standard of conversation. The disgusting language that many of the customers at the Grid too frequently spout makes even my seasoned ears cringe. And as for the fighting I have witnessed in the past two years makes me nervous even about writing this review. It is not uncommon to see the police outside the Grid and I have on occassion considered calling the police myself. Perhaps the large pub chains should think about investing in publicans who are old enough to shave and understand what it means to exercise a duty of care to not only their patrons but also the community they operate in.

The grid did have a bad reputation. However over the past year the atmosphere has improved considerably. This is a genuine community pub with a diverse range of professional clientele as well as retired people and young trades people. Convivial intelligent conversation can be enjoyed here. The staff are friendly and professional. The beers are well kept and served. Customers are consulted about their beer preferences before new products are brought in. There are negatives...it does need a refurb. All in all I regard this a a very pleasant local which we visit 2-3 times a week.
southfields - 28 Aug 2008 11:31
The Grid Inn is a fairly standard JD Wetherspoons pub a couple of minutes walk from Southfields tube station. Not one of their best ale wise, only one guest, and the staff dont fill you with any great confidence. Attractive dcor with loads of local photos and information.

Millay - 11 May 2008 19:32
Ha! I was a member of te barstaff here - from Feb 1996-June 1996.

It was a typical Wetherspoon when I worked there.
wbafc_beer - 21 Dec 2007 18:37
Far from the nicest place I've been, and I feared the worst on viewing the clientele. However, the very pleasant barmaid more than made up for this - why can't all bar staff be as friendly!
hotrods - 6 Oct 2007 08:05
Good grief - this'll be the second good-to-OK review I'll have given for a Wetherspoons pub in a week. I recently went there on two successive thursday nights to eat, and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as this rating says. OK, the clientele were a teeny bit... loud and the barstaff on one occasion seemed to think I was invisible, but the food and drink was good value both times (Pedigree not too cold) and I'd go back to this place again. Is it just me?
arkaye - 20 Sep 2007 21:10
This is probably one of the worst pub in JDWs portfolio. It's grim, grubby, smelly and full of locals and chavs. Since the smoking ban, the locals tend to stand out in the street and they are not the best advert for the pub.
anonymous - 29 Aug 2007 22:14
A really excellent local. Beer and food spot on and you don't need a fiver to buy a pint. Keep up the good work JDW.
anonymous - 26 Jun 2007 18:29
Unfortunately this place is a let down in Wetherspoons normally pleasant portfolio. Its ok if you're the big drunk geezer at the corner of the bar. They'll serve you before anyone else all the time. A lack of staff at crucial times ( chelsea home games) doesn't help and why are the tables always sticky and clustered with half eaten platefuls? I could go on.
afcgazzard - 26 May 2007 10:49
The people go there because the beers cheap & JDW have an unofficial all is welcome policy, personally I would't be seen dead in this place or the nearby "Garage".
Notasaffa - 17 Jun 2006 17:54
grim. sticky carpets. dim staff. stuck in an early 80's time warp. why do people go here?
alexhooker - 16 Jun 2006 12:53
Full of local degenerates, this place & the Garage are conveniently near the tube station which you can take a train to somewhere decent for a drink.
anonymous - 11 Mar 2006 17:00
OKish food when I was there (quite a while ago), real ales were on (including the excellent Oakham JHB), but served a little too cold. They had a strict "No under-18s" policy at the time.
Sigmund - 24 Oct 2005 20:43
Really nasty pub. Went there on a friday night - regulars unfriendly to the point of hostility, all the tables taken up with either old men or the chav brigade. We decided to leave as quickly as possible, but had to wait 5 minutes because there was a fight going on at the entrance so we couldn't get out. Nice.
libero - 21 Sep 2005 11:50
Oh my god. What else can I say............I'm of to the garage. The lure of cheap booze couldn't tempt me back. Isabella.
isabella - 10 Jan 2005 19:57
This place is the pits. So smokey that it is difficult to see where you are going. Definitely one for the pipe smoking, racing post, slipper brigade. Stay well clear if you have any class.
anonymous - 23 Dec 2004 10:09
have to agree with sam. this place is pokey, smokey and so hard to get served in. the barstaff seem more interested in shouting to the very drunk regulars. i've walked out and gone to the garage next door a few times. xpensive but much better.
gary - 25 Sep 2004 09:54
You will never meet more friendly and helpful staff than at The Grid. The food is excellent value too.
The only downside is the amount of smoke despite the non-smoking area.
Well done to all the staff!
Helen - 23 Aug 2004 23:19
The Grid is a brilliant pub and their sunday lunch is both a bargain and top notch.
Denise - 11 Feb 2004 14:57
how dare you. this pub is a bastion flagship homage to the wetherspoon chain. mocking it is like mocking a major world religion: its just not done. an exemplary public hostelry, keep up with the good work.
khan mcsween c.s.a - 7 Oct 2003 01:17
Weatherspoon in centre of Southfields next door to the Garage. Unfortunately attracts all the scum of the area looking for cheap booze. Very unpleasant pub full of very unpleasant people.
