user reviews of the Crown and Sceptre, South Croydon

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Just noticed Susie.P’s post. I now agree with her and the Crown and Sceptre is as popular as ever. I have started drinking there again and the Fullers beer is excellent once more. It may be a coincidence but this seems to have happened since the licensees themselves now have the coveted “Master Cellarman” award. Keep up the good work.
BuilditBoy - 10 Apr 2013 11:37
I disagree builditboy. We have started using this pub on a regular basis and it serves excellent Fullers beer with a good selection. There is usually a good crowd in which speaks for itself. The food is very good homecooked fare at a very reasonable price. Cannot fault the place its like being in a country pub in a town
susie.p - 12 Nov 2012 19:40
Have been going to this pub fairly regularly over the last few years. Recently there's been a very noticable deterioration in the quality of the ales served. This seems to have coincided with the leaving of the aforesaid cellar person who had the "Master Cellarman" qualification. The beer that's being sold now at this pub is well below the standard I expect in a Fullers pub. At 3.50/3.60 a go, the customer should receive a perfect fresh pint, not stale ale served with the sparkler on to disguise the appearance.

Sorry "your"!

No Happy Hour and no Sky................Sounds like a pub to me. Slerpy, 0/10? Time for you're repeat prescription!
Stonecoat - 6 Sep 2011 12:10
I agree Tony. Slerpy just promotes his own Croydon pubs (see list) and has little regard for people's feelings. Don't take him too seriously as he has had his own problems - mentally, and drinkwise. A sad case really; we avoid him in The George - he always has an ususual theory....
tradervic - 29 Aug 2011 22:36
One negative comment on The Crown in the past 18 months by slerpy and for him to call me, the cellarman, a monkey (just because I am dark skined) is bang out of order.
wealdman - 29 Aug 2011 13:10
Lessee would be the correct term but it is actually a tenancy ....so Karen is a tenant. A pub that is actually in decline, no happy hour ,no sky sports formerly this pub had both. The ale is far too warm, employ a monkey as cellarman and sadly that is the result. The Fullers pubs charge a fortune, there are dozens of better pubs in Croydon, with cheaper and far superior beer.0/10.
slerpy - 28 Aug 2011 16:29
Best pub in the local area (and there are a few!). The ales have always been well kept in the 8 or 9 years I've been using it, and it is well known for good food. Nice range of beer/wine and a jovial atmosphere, is well run(the leasee {if there is such a word} has many years doing this schtik). HOWEVER Fullers prices!! Unusual booth arrangement in the main bar, not unlike a pub up the road where the same beer is considerably cheaper. Still, high rating!
Stonecoat - 10 Mar 2011 14:21
Very nice pub wth a friendly atmosphere, They have a great real ale selection but the beer isnt the best kept round the area!
I has a very classical pub feel and they serve very nice food in a clean attractive surrounding!
i would reccomend popping in if you ever get the chance!
lawt - 22 Feb 2011 15:18
How this is not rated as the best pub in south croydon i will never know! By far the nicest in the area.

Good selection of ales, good pub grub.

Only down sides would be the choice of lagers aren't to my taste carling, stella and Amstel. However the real beers are excellent enough not to have to be too concerned about that.

No sky sports unfortunately.

Very well run cosy friendly local pub. Great food, Fullers ales plus guest ale. Good wine selection. Karen and Matt are doing a cracking job.
stanleyp - 9 Nov 2010 16:25
Went in here last night while i was waiting for my take away, had a pint London pride not a bad pint the pub was not very busy got served straight away, it is a fullers pub so is expensive

The Crown and Sceptre is a fine traditional pub in a residential side street in South Croydon opposite Whitgift School.

The interior is cosy, carpeted and comfortable and gives the pub a slight feel of an upmarket country pub. There's some exposed brickwork and a number of seating booths down the side which afford a degree of privacy. A large conservatory style area at the back is mainly used for dining and the pub is very popular for Sunday lunch, in particular, I gather. There's an outside drinking area at the front on the extended pavement and some seats outside at the back.

It's a Fullers pub which on my visit was serving Pride, Chiswick, ESB and Gales Seafarers. The Pride - 3.15p - was in good form.

I quite like this one and I'm surprised it's not better known and that it doesn't seem to have won any Fullers Pub Awards yet.

There are rather more pubs than you might reasonably expect in these quiet residential side streets round here - and this pub clearly seems to be the pick of them as far as I'm concerned

JohnBonser - 3 Jun 2010 13:04
Best proper pub I've been in for a long time. Warm friendly welcome and good service from the bar staff. Locals are generally friendly joining in conversation. Only one dickhead but then I suppose every pub has one but won't let that taint my review. Well kept Fullers ales and the Festival Dark Mild very moorish. Too many establishments have become restaurant first pub second. Not the case here. It's a pub with a restaurant as it should be but not to say you can't dine in the bar area. Thankfully the interior has not been subject to the plastic pub treatment but has a rather tastefull traditional english style which adds charm and character to the whole experience. It is also kept very clean. Even the brass carpet strip on the floor is highly polished. Don't get me wrong, Gods waiting room it's not and when I was here one afternoon during last week clientele was varied with an added bonus of no chavs

This place is definatley one of South Croydons' best kept secrets.

The slerp is back ! Long live the slerp !
lostparker - 5 Jan 2009 10:46
More from the LEMON PARTY !
slerpy - 5 Jan 2009 10:39
I had heard that Greenpeace had got the slerp and done us all a favour and chaged him for his own good in Sourf Croydon. If seen please do not feed.
Beersupper - 2 Jan 2009 15:27
'slerp alert' for the slerpy

where is this fount of croydon knowledge gone ?

has he been wounded in battle - or maybe worthing ?
lostparker - 2 Jan 2009 13:55
Has the slerpy retired, emigrated - or gone back to the home for the bewildered ?
paladian - 29 Dec 2008 16:00
Simwilliams and mapwizard always travel together, both are members of the Reigate chapter of the LEMON PARTY !
slerpy - 19 Dec 2008 11:46
No map, slerpy is paid by the brewers of Golden Pride. If you drink this beer because the bottom has fallen out of your world - the world falls out of your bottom !
simwilliams - 10 Dec 2008 16:53
Ole slerpy continues his PR role for this mediocre pub. One wonders why ? Perhaps the promise of getting unbarred ?!

mapwizard - 10 Dec 2008 16:45
Very few drinkers have tried Golden Pride on draught ! The chance to try this magnificent beer will be available on Saturday ( 13 th )! The London Porter has to expire first !Serious drinkers will make a beeline for this greatly under estimated pub.
slerpy - 10 Dec 2008 16:31
I was recommended this pub for Sunday lunches by a bar staff member from another pub when I was about to have a Sunday roast in the pub he worked in! This bar staff member was not wrong in his recommendation - the Sunday roasts are cooked to a very high quality together with plenty of seasonal vegetables and roast potatoes all at an amazing 5.95.

All in all I would recommend this pub to anyone who is at a loose end on a Sunday and wants to have a well prepared reasonably priced Sunday roast. The landlord and other bar staff always seem very pleasant and are willing to make sure you have extras like horseradish sauce or apple sauce if you require them. Naturally the beers on offer are very well kept as well.

Highly recommended if you are looking for somewhere to eat for Sunday lunch in the South Croydon area without noise or disturbance from Sky TV or gaming machines that are prevalent in other pubs.
Purley_Drinker - 30 Nov 2008 21:23
Golden Pride 8.4% is due on soon , only one barrel so be quick !
slerpy - 27 Nov 2008 17:35
Pride, ESB, Chiswick, Goddards Ale of Wight. There are actually 6 pumps so more guests could be accommodated but the handful of other punters seemed to be drinking lager so maybe there would not be the throughpull to support it, which is something of a shame. The helpful barman/guv(?) explained the single guest rotation and a small display of pumpclips suggests prudent choices. Carpetted throughout except stone tiles around bar and a small wood-floored central section, front area has large windows, wood tables/chairs & brick fireplace with wood burning stove, opposite bar some well-upholstered bench settles form open booths around the tables, more wood seating and 2nd fireplace/stove to the rear, glass roof here so quite light (I think the main dining area if busy Sun), then french doors to a small uncovered area with a couple of picnic sets before the carpark. Walls are part wood-panelled, part brick, part papered, partly adorned with old photos. Large plasma to rear, no sky. Food looked decent value; roast beef/lamb sarnie wi chips 3.50, specials were lasagne/garlic bread/salad 5.25 or hot roast pork/stuffing sarnie 3.95. Worth a look if in the area.
trainman - 15 Oct 2008 10:52
A wonderful pint of Goddard's Ale of Wight on Sunday.
slerpy - 13 Oct 2008 11:38
Slerpy seems to be the PR man for the Crown and Septre - never a single negative thought in 6 posts over the past six months !

'great gueast beer'...'quality food is the best value in Croydon'...etc.

Would the fact that ole Slerp is barred from many Croydon pubs have anything to do with his undying praise - in the hope that his frequent visits to the C&S can continue ?
mapwizard - 13 Oct 2008 11:14
The last two guest beers have been Castle Rock Nottingham Ale and this weekend Goddard's Ale of Wight both of which have been excellent !
slerpy - 12 Oct 2008 17:54
Popped in for a meal last Friday. They had a Osset ale on as a guest at 3.00 ! It was really top hole but too expensive. The quality food is the best value in Croydon. It is very useful to have a car park as my teetotal designated driver found.N.B. I do not drink and drive as spillages are inevitable.
slerpy - 1 Aug 2008 14:53
The guest beer today was Highgate Special. As the Crown only ever has one Gueast beer they are carefully chosen.
slerpy - 12 May 2008 17:07
I popped in mid- week to find a very pleasant surprise ! Castle Rock Harvest Pale in the BEST possible condition. b*gger the price we agreed to continue drinking and did not want to go home.
slerpy - 9 May 2008 19:39
Visited on a Bank Holiday Monday and the place was very quiet. Had a Pink of Fuller's ESB which went down like a treat.

Unfortunately I was disappointed with the dcor of the pub, seems to be the standard design for most pubs in London once they have been re-furbished. At least it was not painted battle ship grey.
Kerrminator - 9 May 2008 10:18
Wealth warning, the London Pride has increased 25p to 2.85.
slerpy - 11 Apr 2008 20:27
the beer is superb, the Gale's Festival mild was to die for.
slerpy - 30 Mar 2008 18:03
Popped in on a midweek lunchtime...very friendly and helpful barman, exceptional pint, sausage and onion sandwich......a traditional and comfortable pub! I wish is was my local !
TEL3 - 7 Mar 2008 15:12
Very pleasant locals pub, with quizzes on Thursdays.
john_the_jester - 20 Jan 2008 13:16
Nice little pub featuring the Fullers range.
Kelvins_Ferret - 15 Jan 2008 13:13
Great wee pub. The staff are all really freindly and make you feel welcome. Has a very comfortable atmosphere to it.
stevokinevo - 14 Jun 2007 15:27
I've popped oin twice in the last month for a few pints midweek. The first time, we sat in the area to the right of the bar as you walk in and found it really smokey as the pub was quite busy but there was no where else to sit. Staff were busy but always remembered our round, they weren't that chatty but they were really busy.

Second visit, we sat at the front at first and then at the tables at the side of the bar, it wasn't that smokey, the staff were less busy and were really friendly, we were made to feel welcome.

Nice seating area at the front on the pavementside patio and also seating at the rear.

I got a really good feeling from this pub, the nice cold lager helped! but I will definately be back.
FuzzyKipper - 23 May 2007 12:32
To Mr (or Ms) anonymous. I am actually the landlord. I've never felt the need to post comments having a somewhat bias view but your comments are out of order! whatever axe you have to grind at least have the guts to not do it anonymously. So I think you owe Mitchell72 an apology!
rob1172 - 13 Feb 2007 13:17
mitchell72 must be the landlord blowing his own trumpet.....me thinks!!!
anonymous - 9 Feb 2007 12:27
In response to Andysk. i was also in the friday before xmas which was very busy. If you had bothered to ask you would have found that one of the "staff" working flat out was actually the new manager! Just a question why didn't you say "popped in today?" as I'm pretty sure the 22nd was the friday before xmas!
mitchell72 - 30 Dec 2006 19:49
Called in Friday before xmas. No sign of managers and the two staff working flat out. Good to see the old landlady has departed but shame she hasn't taken some of the regulars with her. As ever if your idea of a good night out is listening to South Croydon's intellectuals effing and blinding this is the pub for you. If not stay away. Women are a rare breed in these parts. Pride mediocre.
AndySk - 22 Dec 2006 22:22
Came back again as promised. The new menu is fantastic. The chef looks like someone who can actually cook. Some new staff too, very friendly! I'm really beginning to take a liking to this place. Well done, keep it up.
anonymous - 31 Oct 2006 21:10
Nice little local - the beer is almost always good. It can get a bit smoky, and would benefit from a better extractor fan. I could do without the football on TV all the time, but I realise some people like it.
nich52 - 31 Oct 2006 15:27
Just seen the most amazing thing. Came in for a pint and saw a young man on his hands and knees scrubing some wood paneling. I jokingly said to the barmaid "cleaners running late are they?" to which she replied "no he's the manager" Great to see someone taking so much pride in they're pub! WELL DONE.
mitchell72 - 8 Sep 2006 16:55
first time in here and i had a very pleasant time. Friendly staff who obviously get on very well with the regulars, but we were made to feel at home.
The chef (who i later found out was also the manager) was busy in the kitchen and taking the food out himself (a nice touch, and it looked great) but still found time to say hello and have a quick chat with the customers.
Pride was excellent we will definately be coming again!
anonymous - 23 Aug 2006 00:13
"Public bar" type area to the right of the entrance, and a dining type area at the back beyond the end of the bar, plus seating outside at the front.

I've just been in here three days running during the Surrey cricket week at Whitgift school and the London Pride was consistently in perfect condition and reasonably priced at 2.45 a pint. In fact the Pride was the best I've had anywhere for some time - certainly up to Good Beer Guide standard, even though this place isn't in the GBG.
Rich66 - 3 Jun 2006 18:10
A splendid pint of Guinness and first rate "Mini Cheddars". Served with panache and style by pleasant staff. Place a little like the 'Tardis'- not very wide but extends backwards for ever! Substantial and comfortable seating on the forecourt. Dulcet tones of multiple police vehicles passing the end of the road on a regular basis in the evenings, possibly on the way to subdue rioting Chavs in Central Croydon. Most entertaining!
almost_an_old_git - 29 May 2006 20:49
A good Fullers Pub which i travel to go to. Good with friends or just to sit and read the newspaper. Recommended thoroughly.
bobbleofcoulsdon - 24 Mar 2006 19:31
Very impressed with the visit yesterday. Good lunchtime food trade and very welcoming. London Pride spot on. Recommended
JohnBonser - 16 Feb 2006 14:01
One of those pubs where nothing much happens and nothing ever changes - that's a great thing! Always friendly staff (low staff turnover which is rare), consistently well kept beers (both real ale and lagers), friendly regulars and quiet atmosphere conducive to good conversation.
lipster - 1 Feb 2006 13:27
Lovely little pub just off the Brighton Road. Blink and you'll miss it. Good selection of beer, friendly staff, reasonably priced. Seats located outside and at the front during the summer. Worth a visit if you want somewhere peaceful to sit down and have a chat.
steve5312 - 28 Oct 2005 17:04
Not a bad pub but lacks atmosphere. Beer is reasonably priced and staff friendly.
Make_mine_a_large - 7 Sep 2005 17:17
Does what it says on the label. You can`t really go wrong with Fullers and this is a decent example deep in the swamplands of south croydon. Nice food and barstaff too.
darloexile - 27 May 2005 17:04
Pleasant traditional local with excellent Fullers beers.
Nicholas - 11 Sep 2003 05:26
If you want a quiet drink and a chat then this is the place. Tucked away around the corner from all the hustle and bustle of Croydon. Very nice, especially when they have the log fire burning in the winter....
