please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

A Yuppy Bar. How do I know this? It sells so-called "craft beers" with completely unknown names, and heaven knows what they are like until after you have bought one of them. All or most of them are probably yuk, as they sell them with fancy pretty labels and names attached to the pumps. The one I bought was yuk!

Everything about this pub is overpriced to suit the Yuppy market it wants to serve.

£2.50p for plain salted peanuts in tiny ceramic pot. BAH!

No visible price list for the beers sold here. No receipt given to customer after purchase. This pub has lost my goodwill and 4 points for its attitude to serving customers and for the general lack of commercial information.

Men's toilets are usually stinking but yesterday they smelt like Dennis Nilson's blocked sewer pipes. The smell permeated the pub....vile.

Popular pub with a mixed clientele including the odd hipster or two. Garden/yard out front and back were very popular on a warm evening. Fair range of beers including Doom Bar, Purity Mad Goose etc. Tried the Doom Bar with a burger (for a £10) and both went down well - the DB was very well kept. Service was good as pub is staffed up to deal with demand. Would recommend.

Let's be honest its not a great name for a pub. But apart from that no problems. Handy being so close to the local station, so this was my meet up point on Saturday evening. Not too crowded just after 6pm, beer selection very good, samples freely offered, and the service was great.
Large interior with plenty of seats, sofas and tables, and then a covered terrace (heaters later on) and a good sized patio area, with trees. All very neat and tidy. Back later on to eat, very busy but service still great. It was a young professional crowd as the PR people would say, but being an old beer drinker it was still fine. Safe for women, but a shame about the carpeting. Food, and it was proper food, not the micro-wave stuff, was excellent and priced well. Beer again was good, coming from Channel Is, Yorkshire and London. Will use when in hampstead again.

Pub gets a prize for having a fully priced comprehensive and readable drinks list on the bar (+2 points). A bit too popular and crowded. Still pay it a visit if you don`t mind the squeeze. Needs to upgrade its toilet accommodation accommodationfor the numbers using this pub (-1 point).

Huge pub with a really nice garden. Good selection of ales on (6 or 7 pumps if I recall correctly) - the Harvey's was particularly good. Didn't eat but the food looked really nice too.

Currently visiting a pub for every station on London Overground. Did this one for Hampstead Heath. Lovely pub, upmarket but not too poncy and still felt like a proper pub. Real ale was in good condition and food was nice and not overly expensive considering the area. Has a wonderful beer garden, could easily spend a lazy summers sunday in here. Recommend!

Pretty sure he is in there every night but Brian and his three-legged dog will perform magic tricks on request
Brian is more regular than the bar staff who seem to change if you stay for more than one pint

A warm welcome on a cool early evening this Saturday, after a walk around Hampstead and down Rosslyn Hill. It was fairly quiet, starting to build up as I caught up with Camden New Journal and a quiet (very well kept and a wonderfully drinkable) pint of Saltaire Brewery Cascade Pale Ale.

This pub is much better than I initially expected. The staff are friendly, the ambiance quite cosy and a nice pub garden to boot.

It does get fairly crowded but is well worth it as the draft beer selection is very good.

Agree with Lucyleftfoot...great pub but at the right time. Favourite stop off after an weekend afternoon autumnal walk on the Heath.
UrbanGenieThing - 16 Oct 2009 16:01
Generally I'd give this pub a great rating. It becomes my regular over the winter months for it's cosy warm atmosphere.
The service can take a while during busy times so it's always best to wait till the bar is looking fairly empty, or you'll be in for a wait.

Clientel can be a bit rowdy and I'd guess it isn't just alcohol they've been consuming that evening.

Head there for a quiet midweek drink to really enjoy it. I wouldn't reccomend visiting on a friday or saturday night.
Lucyleftfoot - 22 Sep 2009 14:49
Very nice spot - great for a pint on a summer's evening. Some nice wheat beer on tap, but there is always a bit of a wait at the bar.

Wonderful Garden, great food and great beer! Great for evenings out with a group of friends.

Food service was extremely strange. Nice glasses for the beer. Beer garden very nice, with magnificent views of the opticians opposite, and some lovely growing things as well as a very 'in country' verandah. Staff seemed more trashed than the punters, which given the location is quite understandable.

Many of the sandwiches appeared to contain 'greenery' to the surprise of the diners. Free-ranging small children provide an entertaining navigation hazard for the less sober punter.

london_drunker - 18 Apr 2009 13:29
Very very busy when I called in. Nothing available in the spacious beer garden but finally got a table inside. Think I had a pint of Youngs in here, unremarkable whatever it was though.
Sharp - 31 Aug 2008 21:29
Strange one this...a lot going for it with the garden etc but seems to attract a very rowdy clientele on occassion. Also service at the bar can be extremely slow.
TS77 - 22 Jul 2008 16:00
Nice pub at selected times of the day, beware once twilight decends the chavs creep out of the woodwork and reclaim the night, too many greasy Caesar haircuts and sovereign smoking going on for my tastes. Nice until early evening, good selection behind the bar and the food is passable, it's a pub after all.
theregent - 10 May 2008 16:23
And yet another very good pub in Hampstead, this one very near the Heath. By this point on our little crawl, though, I was beginning to wonder if Hamsptead any really traditional-feeling pubs left other than the White Bear. Hampstead's pubs are mart to a fault. This pub and the White Horse face each other across an interesting little junction, between Hampstead and Belsize Park. Spending a summer evening in this area could be very nice indeed.
Greshon - 5 Apr 2008 21:58
Nice pub with a good range of continental beers, comfortable location. the only trouble with this pub and this go's for all pubs since the introduction of the draconian smoking ban, that their was a heavy aroma of BO and farts lingering in the air thus forcing me to drink outside in the garden area. which is not the best solution. Then again with the smoking ban in place it realy brings home what disgusting people frequent these places, please repeal the smoking ban.
theregent - 9 Feb 2008 23:18
Interesting pub this, with a good range of wine, lagers, wheat beers, fruit beers and ales. The food can be superb, with the odd duff note. Tends to be lively without being too shouty, and there's a Pacman machine by the loos. A good winter pub. But I can't understand why everyone's bigging up the Curry Paradise over the road - it's a dismal place. However, walk 200 yards towards Kentish Town, past the White Horse on Fleet Road, and you'll find Aroma Spice - this is seriously one of the best curry houses in London, no exaggeration.
adelondon - 29 Nov 2007 16:39
I've just returned from this pub, and it's one that I certainly won't be visiting again. The beer/staff were good, but a few hours into the visit a group of baseball capped guys (who had been visiting the toilet a hell of a lot) accused me of staring at them. Great. A night out with my girlfriend ruined by a group of coked up chavs.

Avoid. It's not worth the potential violence.
anonymous - 9 Nov 2007 23:53
Good to excellent pub. The low (4.0) rating is a real puzzle as the beer, staff and layout are all fine. It has the added advantage of a huge beer garden. Never tried the food - I am usually just passing through here for a pint or two on my way to the excellent Indian (Curry Paradise) nearby.
Londoner1961 - 11 Sep 2007 13:53
Been to this pub twice in the last 6 weeks due to convenient location near Hampstead Heath Station. This week they had Adnams, Landlord plus a summer guest beer on tap, all kept very well. Food is good, although didn't come out of the kitchen at the same time. That said, the bar staff couldn't have been more apologetic about the f-up. Big garden with eclectic furniture, large comfy sofas, and really not very crowded at all. Overall 7/10.
beaucoup_fish - 17 Aug 2007 14:05
Nice pub with comfy sofas and good beer, but so busy on a Saturday night.

One of the best curry houses in London is just across the road though.
vic_of_india - 3 Apr 2007 18:03
staff very rude there not at all friendly keep changing time of when kids are allowed in til.
slyvester - 3 Apr 2007 00:42
Abundant with expensive premium lagers for which you have to ask to be topped up every time one is ordered.

Half of this large pub is smoking and the other half is not and they have a good food selection.

The bar staff are cold and distant, but I think this is due to the manager only hiring people that have never worked behind the bar before. I was a little put off when I ordered a pint of Star and as the beer was a little lively the barman was pouring some into a half glass and then into my pint glass. Then when I asked if he could top up my full pint he said thats as much as I can fit in Hmmm!!!

There is a big beer garden that is great in the summer, but it does very get busy very early.

Strongers - 27 Feb 2007 10:20
Easily the worst Sunday roast I have ever had in a pub. I didn't think it was actually possible to get wrong. Cheap fatty bits of meat, a horrible gelatinous gravy, hard uncooked veg, flat pancake style yorkshire pudding and pale dry roast potatoes. Avoid at all costs!
dearl - 7 Nov 2006 22:32
Popular boozer right next to Hampstead Heath - the train station and the real thing. On the whole, caters to quite a young crowd, but you still meet locals who've been in Hampstead "twenty years, man and boy," and all that sort of thing. The beers are pretty pricey, the wines more so, but there's a pretty good rack of spirits, and you get a deal on large measures.

Separate smoking and non-smoking sections, if you find that sort of thing important.

A large double-sided fireplace keeps you warm in the winter time; two large leather sofas occupy the prime location right next to it.

The beer garden is great in the summer, especially when they run the barbecue. The burgers we had weren't exactly prime beef, but were a good size and reasonably priced.

Open until midnight most evenings, and gets very busy at the weekend.
ConradKIng - 16 May 2006 16:45
Quite an amusing story. Obviously the bar staff were out of order and rude, but on the other hand I have an underlying sympathy for their views about coffee in pubs ...

My main gripe is that they rarely charge enough for it. Coffee in pubs should be priced high, so as to drive up profits and subsidise beer for the rest of us. Same goes for wine. And any food other than beery food.
anonymous - 8 May 2006 12:12
A nice pub that is severely let down by the most unpleasant bar staff I have ever encountered. Order non-alcoholic drinks at your peril...you will be berated by the aggressive barman with the height complex and his curly-toupee clad pal, and told that you should go over the road to Starbucks if you want tea or coffee. They will then proceed to complain about their manager for installing a coffee machine, and then refuse to serve you any hot drinks at all. The 2 particular members of staff I encountered on Saturday May 6th must both have been off sick with a nasty case of personality-disorder on the customer-relations training day. Don't bother giving people like this your hard-earned cash.
Larrikin - 8 May 2006 11:54
Lyncroft you crazy fool! This pub is totally non-ponced up. It's laid back, genuine, comfy and has decent beers. The premium lagers with ornate taps offer a choice of good beers - did you not see the bitters? Don't you want to try a variety of beers? It's probably a good thing the Carling tap is hidden - this is a beer website after all! It has a beer garden. The staff are friendly. Its roomy. COME ON! ITS GENUINE AND BRILLIANT
MrsBee - 9 Mar 2006 15:36
A plethora of very expensive premium lagers with ornate taps "screaming buy me buy me" hit you as you stand at the bar. The unsuspecting won't notice the crappy stuff hidden round the corner. The Carling tap was even hidden by a no smoking at the bar sign. I'm not being ripped off and had a pint of Carling. Yet another ponced up pub.............yawn. Seemed to be full of under age drinkers. Okay yah.
Lyncroft - 8 Feb 2006 17:43
We went to this pub for Sunday roast as it was recommended by a few friends and we weren't disappointed. The food was good, generous portions, reasonable wine list, friendly staff, a little on the expensive side but we enjoyed it. The atmosphere was pretty relaxed with some quiet background music and a mix of different aged people. Won't be too long before we visit again.
anonymous - 11 Sep 2005 17:43
I can't believe all the bad comments on this. I regularly go to the pub, and eat there every time - both at weekend and during the week. Granted the Roasts are quite expensive but very nice, and the service I have always found to be great. Really friendly and although not 'fast food' the food always arrives within a reasonable time.
I'll be going there tonight and no doubt eating a lovely bruscetta or pie.
zoeg - 23 Dec 2004 10:31
After the pub up the road went all poncey me and the girlf reserved a space for Sunday lunch and beer with mates once Sunday late summer.

It was gorgeous food, and a great atmosphere. I should imagine in nice weather with the beer garden and the french doors opening onto the garden its a great place to meet for beer in the afternoon or evening. Would fully recommend and am going tonight!
shhmikes - 13 Dec 2004 14:02
Went here for Sunday lunch yesterday and it was rubbish. We had the same problems everyone else seems to have encountered - waited 45 minutes for our food before complaining and being told our order had been 'lost'. Then, when the roast arrived, the beef was awful.

A real shame. This pub could be brilliant, but the quality of the food and the service is so poor
Jonesy - 22 Nov 2004 16:19
It looks good from the outside, and the garden looks like a winner for teh summer weather, but it was very ordinary inside. The Sunday roast was expensive and extremely disappointing. I don't have a clue what animal the 'beef' came from. It was like a 1960s school dinner.
Cardamom - 7 Nov 2004 18:21
Excellent pub, great selection of Belgian beers and a lovely garden makes for a great place to spend an afternoon. Kid friendly as well!
JMiller - 31 Aug 2004 11:31
This pub is a disaster. It has all the potential but none of the actual. A few of us went there last Saturday, there seemed to be only one person behind the bar who really didnt want to be there. When we eventually got our drinks we went and sat out in the beer garden.

We tried to order food. I went to the bar and asked for a menu and got told by the most miserable member of staff that I have ever seen that menus are on all the tables. When I told her that they werent she just walked off.

Eventually we ordered food and had to wait (and this is no word of a lie) for an hour and a half. Each time we went to the bar to enquire where the food was we were told that the kitchen was very busy. I wouldnt normally mind this, as we were in no rush, but there were no more than about 20 people in the place and probably only a quarter of them seemed to be after food.

I was so disappointed by this place. I would strongly advise everyone to avoid it like the plague, especially seeing as there are so many better pubs up the road in Kentish Town.

Mike - 19 Aug 2004 15:39
Long wait for food at lunchtime, only come here if you have a whole day to wait for your food!
sharon - 2 Aug 2004 11:57
Nice pub, great garden at the back in the summer
Kit - 26 Jul 2004 22:11
Dull, boring, overpriced, devoid of atmosphere. Avoid.
Adam - 25 Jul 2004 23:18
This place is great for a quiet afternoon in the garden. Lovely food and friendly staff! Where else can you play boules?
Anonymous - 13 Jul 2004 13:04
Overrated, overpriced, service with a smile it is not.
Sam - 15 Mar 2004 09:08
lovely place, friendly staff, great Sunday lunch
NICHOLAS - 15 Mar 2004 08:48
A really nice little boozer
Jenny - 3 Mar 2004 12:43
A great pub in the summer with a lovely large sun-trap garden, however the garden pails into insignificance when compared with the most relaxing sofas in London.
Richard - 20 Jan 2004 15:00
Buzzy courtyard and all round good pub.
duck - 17 Sep 2003 13:51
A charming pub in a lovely part of town. I can confirm that they do have a lovely courtyard, and Hoegaarden at 3.90 a pint. Full of Aussies if you like that sort of thing.
Ruby - 17 Sep 2003 12:00
Excellent pub with lovely courtyard.
