I'd forgotten that I'd had the Black Bull Bitter before so I drank it again last Friday lunchtime having been told it had not been brewed since the beginning of the pandemic. My pint wasn't quite as good as the one I'd just had next door at the Black Sheep Brewery but was nevertheless still of a high standard.

Live folk music in the taproom last Thursday meant that we spent most of our evening in Masham here. I stuck to the Black Bull Bitter which I don't recall ever having tried before. As expected, it was in excellent condition. A fine way to end our Masham night out.

Last July I posted complimentary comments about this pub.Well,a lot can change over eight months.
My wife and I visited again on Easter Monday and we received the same warm welcome as last time-the beer was equally good, but the food was absolutely abyssmal!
After nondescript starters my wife had the roast beef and I chose the steak and ale pie.
I suspect that the beef was left from the previous day-it was stone cold, which was not intended I'm sure.
The steak pie was cut from a tray and the crust was burnt black and covered in dried up gravy.
All in all, very disappointing-although we are regular visitors to Masham we will not be returning to The White Bear.

Had lunch here after visiting the excellent bar at Theakston's Visitor Centre.
Inevitably the beer was in perfect condition, but we were surprised by the quality of the food which, for it's price was very good.
The staff were friendly, efficient and helpful, particularly in providing my wife with the recipe for the delicious black pudding hotpot!
We shall certainly visit again when in the area.

Very disappointing visit to The White Bear @ Masham today. Main food was very good, i.e. steak and ale pie, pasta bake and scampi. However, the salad was very poor with one lettuce leaf and one tomato with no dressing and the chips were frozen! The garden peas were dry and hard! Most good country Inns serve proper chips!

The lady who waited on us was miserable and unpleasant and made us feel bad because we asked for tartar sauce as well as tomato ketchup! She made a loud comment about us wanting both On serving the food she did ask the whole table if we wanted any sauces but walked away while we answered-hence the two journeys that seemed to upset her.

At the end of our meal the emergency door in the restaurant area was wide open-we asked for it to be closed because we were freezing due to the ice cold wind tunnel from the door but were told that the outside tables were being brought in! On bringing the tables in the staff decided to rearrange the dining room and at that stage we decided to leave due to the noise of tables being scraped around the room and staff shouting instruction to each other-very unpleasant environment.

We are regulars to The White Bear and hopefully this particular days complaint is a one off! However it has to stay as a one off as any more complaints of this nature will result in us all going elsewhere for lunch!

Also, being Christmas and the weather outside was cold wet and windy we were all surprised that a mulled wine was not offered for sale.

Excellent pub serving superb Theakstons beer (not surprisingly) and food very good too. Welcoming locals (humans and dogs) and staff made for a happy visit - and a few return trips!!

9/10

Hydes Ringmaster was the guest ale when I visited, top notch it was too as was the Theakstons best and XB. Didn't enjoy my pint of OP as much as I thought 3.90 was a bit steep. Back to the Best, this was the 1st time I've tried it since the days it was a JDW regular, much much better now real flavour since they raised the ABV to 3.8. Still the best pub in Masham even if the OP is too expensive.

Echo of the above. I too was there on a quiet Monday afternoon and enjoyed a perfect pint of XB. Didn't try the food, but smelled and looked good.

Decent range of Theakstons, I had the Black Bull which was excellent. Quiet on a Monday afternoon but a very pleasant place to sup a half!

By far the best pub in Masham, or indeed the area. The best example of a country there is. Brilliant real ale selection and all kept a the right temp and all expertly pulled. Great atmosphere all year round. Warm open fires in the winter and a large light filled dining area for the summer. Great pub food, not a Breaks style meal in sight...and that's a rarity these days. Cannot recommend it highly enough

The White Bear is easily the best pub in Masham. The beer, food and wine are all excellent. Theakstons beer is served at its best, just round the corner from where it is made. The menu is comprehensive with a good selection of wines to accompany.
The accommodation has recently been extended and renovated to a high standard and the rooms are given names of local interest. All the rooms are good however the penthouse suite is exceptional. I would recommend booking early as they are guaranteed plenty of repeat business especially in summer.
Food is all prepared in house with seasonal variations.
In winter open fires make the place warm and inviting and in summer the seating area at the front catches the sun.
The staff are friendly and approachable.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Located next door to the Black Sheep Brewery this is actually Theakston's main pub in their home town. The original pub was bombed in 1941and this new hotel was converted from nearby brewery cottages. Most of the building is hotel but there is a restaurant to one side of the pub entrance and a small cosy taproom to the right. Dcor in the restaurant side is simple with a few pictures and menus on blackboards, bare floorboards, some farming implements and little atmosphere. The taproom is far pleasanter to drink in. There are handpulls in each bar usually carrying the Theakston's range plus Guinness and a lager. The young staff are attentive and keen, the punters vary from richish diners to old locals. As the Theakstons showcase, in tandem with the Black Bull in Paradise, the beer quality is spot on.

After a recent tour around Theakston's brewery, followed by a pint of old and mild in the Visitor Centre thought I should try out Theakston's only tied house. No mild so a pint of Old Peculier and a ham sandwich. All was fine.

The public bar has a nice traditional public bar feel to it.

The old bar is fine, great atmosphere and good beer. We had the dog with us and they let us eat off the restaurant menu in the bar which was brilliant. The food was good too. The rest of the place looked a bit bland but who cares when the old bar is so good?

Nice bar on room on the right as you enter with Theakston's Best Bitter and XB, Deuchers IPA, Old Hooky (Norton),Black Bull.
Room on the left does food shown on blackboards, all very nice and comfortable but felt like straight from the freezer through combi-oven to plate a la Brake's frozen foods?
